Where are you, Alphatucky?

Looks to be North Alpharetta, and 20 miles to the east of me.  We (where I'm at) appear to have missed the brunt of all this, it came thru starting about 5 and was pretty rough for a couple of hours, and now appears to be subsiding.  It would appear that the eye missed us at least 40 miles to the east.  The power flickered a bit early this morning but beyond that, we appear spared on that front as well.

I'm certainly worried for the folks in Asheville, that looks real bad.  Also, it seems that there is scant info from the big bend area of yet.  I'm hoping we get real lucky all the way around.

The track seems to continue to creep further east than forecast, and the turn toward the northwest seems to be slow coming as well.  Both of those facts seem to bode well for the greater Nashville area, but western NC is getting abused.  My in-laws have a cabin on the Toccoa river outside Blue Ridge GA, I will be curious to see how high the water gets up there...

That is some pretty country.  One of my favorite hiking spots is the Benton McKay Trail In that area.

Yeah NE Jawja, East Tenn, NW S.Carolina, and western side of N.Carolina getting lots of water.

Hillbillies and their stills in the Appalachian area are now likely hiding at the top of the hills...

One good thing that this storm might do is continue moving quickly off the gulf which would reduce some of the fuel for higher rain levels...  🙏🙏🙏

Damn Helene is a fast one...

Right now the EYE is over Cullowhee NC

6 deaths reported in Georgia, unclear as to where of yet.  I know at least two were killed in a pop up tornado near Brunswick (North of Jacksonville).  I suspect that number will climb in the south as more information comes available.

I presume that 2-3 of them are folks who died because they didn't get their daily infusion of Waffle House hash browns, smothered and covered.

Where did the eye pass relative to Athens?  I have a good buddy who lives there, haven't heard from him yet.

Not far from there, not clear how big the eye was when it went thru there, but at least the eastern portion of the eye was about 40 miles from me, and Athens is about 70 miles from me.  Basically, it probably didn't get a direct hit, but it was close.  They likely have lots of power outages in that area.  Below is the outage map from GA Power indicating 50k plus without power in that area

Here is new video of that dude with his dog getting rescued. Glad they were both rescued. Rumors are he is a vet with PTSD who lives on his boat with his dog. So I don’t want to pile on him anymore.

11 now confirmed dead in Georgia, including a first responder.  According to Kemp's presser, it's a shit show in Valdosta (south central, GA, just north of the border to Florida) with many people currently trapped.

I fear greatly for anyone down river from that dam in NC.

For now the imminent failure appears to be overflow vs structural, but it's downstream flooding either way.

Generally speaking, "dam failure" does NOT mean overtopping or extra release.  It means the dam...fails.  As in "breaks/collapses."  Overtopping is a key MECHANISM to make that happen (dams are designed with floodgates to prevent overtopping for that very reason).  Would like to see more of what they are saying re this dam.

Yeah, I don't know if it's misuse of terms or sloppy reporting, but this is what I read:

Quote

As of 11 a.m. Friday, Lake Lure officials told Rutherford County Emergency Management they expect water will be spilling over the Lake Lure Dam.

He probably lived on his boat.

Most likely losing everything except his dog. Those thinking he was just an asshole in the ocean taking selfies for IG,  was just a still taken from the CG swimmer's GoPro.

Glad they got both off safely.

There are a couple of comments under some of the tweets about this that he is a veteran with PTSD and does likely live on his boat with his dog. So I will go back and clean up my post.

I spent my birthday in Asheville a few months ago and it was a magical trip. It’s heartbreaking. To see all the damage and flooding. It is tragic.

No foul. Your post wasn't overly malicious.

Others? It's surly.

He got off his boat with his possession (with a PFD on) that he cared most for. Swimmer got to make two good saves.

Drone 11: People stranded on roof of flooded Unicoi County Hospital

UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WCYB) — Patients and staff at Unicoi County Hospital are trapped on the roof Friday due to flooding caused by Tropical Storm Helene.

News 5 spoke with Erwin Police Chief Regan Tilson who said more than 50 people are trapped on the roof.

Ballad Health said as of 12:27 p.m., 54 people were on the roof and 7 remain in rescue boats.

All roads accessing the hospital are impassable due to flooding. Several cruisers and ambulances have been lost.

A SWAT team happened to be training and was able to save medications for the patients. Tilson said all patients and staff are safe at this time.

Ballad said theTennessee Emergency Management Agency and the National Guard are involved in the rescue operation

Lake Lure approx 30 miles east of Asheville.

And now more NC problems...

While it would suck to be on top of that hospital roof, that area is not that far over the border from NC. Like Texas has had for years, NC has a helicopter task force made up from National Guard aircrews and rescue specialists/swimmers from fire departments. No doubt they are flying throughout NC now looking for stranded motorists or those in homes. They could fly to Tennessee if needed to that hospital should the waters not be receding.

...CSB/? TXTF-1 with 5 helos and six swimmers were the first aircraft in to New Orleans the following morning after Katrina. The CG aircraft had been moved east and was still in the aftermath of the storm when TXTF-1 flew in from their staging area at Ellington Field just as the sun came up. Started picking up stranded people as soon as they got into NO. Baton Rouge became their base of operations.

State of Georgia National Guard should also be able to contribute, not far from us either.
