This thing is fucking awesome. I wanted an Analog Pocket but they go for like $250 before shipping and over $300 after, so I looked into this kit. Funny Playing is a company which makes original Game Boy mods, like replacement shells or screens or buttons. They've recently taken to producing an FPGA kit that is a complete replacement for an entire game boy color. Brand new PCB, brand new screen, brand new buttons, brand new shell, brand new membrane, running on an accurate FPGA simulation of the real Game Boy Color ASICs and CPU. The end result? A brand new, produced in 2024 Game Boy Color that you can customize. I put together a kit with the original brick game boy colors, because the GBC never came in those colors, and it's awesome. You can press in the volume button to get an on-screen menu which lets you switch some options, like timing or change the system from a black and white game boy to a game boy color. The screen has multiple modes -- either 4x integer scale, or full screen non-integer scale, with or without dot matrix screen shader, with the option to turn on or off 1 frame blending, which turns flashing images into transparencies like the old ghosting game boy screen would do.

Best of all, these things are $60, less than 1/3 the cost of an anlogue pocket before shipping! I can't recommend this thing enough. Couple it with a $20 Game Boy color flash cart from ebay or ali express, and you have one of the coolest handhelds ever. Can't recommend it enough.

This seems better is it the same thing but with a bit more effort in exact reproduction?

Firstly, Fuck Palmer Luckey and his alt-right, immigrant shooting, steve bannon chumming company

Secondly, that thing is more than twice the price and doesn't do anything special. The screen resolution doesn't mean jack shit if you're using integer scaling. These screens that Funny Playing are using are the ones that were intended originally for Game Boy Advance upgrade kits, they're considered premium. Funny Playing has a lot more cachet in this realm than Palmer Luckey, and they're considered a gold standard for modders.

Thirdly, this is using the OpenFPGA Gameboy Color core, which is community driven and cycle accurate. You cannot get more accurate than this. This is using reproduction shells produced from the original molds that the chinese manufacturers used to make the original game boy color shells. Luckey's stuff is in no way more exact reproduction than this, which is using drop-in compatible replacement parts intended to be used on original hardware.
