If you opt out, you cant be in the facility with everyone else, because they cant guarantee that they are going to be following the protocols. Time to live the life as a regualr college student for a full academic year...

This is one of those ideas that looked good on paper and then the consequences of the action become more apparent as they have to then follow the protocol as a non-athlete. They better be careful, because at some point if you opt out and everyone else stays, you are essentially a dead scholarship that is 1, going to get buried on the depth chart and 2, become a prime attrition candidate due to long-term eligibility vs. development numbers game.

It makes sense if the entire team does it, but as an individual you are essentially making it more likely that you get processed due to the long-term numbers game that is college football recruiting. Enjoy sitting out the season and then realize that your transfer options are limited because you didn't get to stay in the off season/regular season training programs.

So do the athletes get access to all of that "academic assistance" that some need to get through the year?

this sums it up well... is that not what is happening here? also- lawyer types- it may vary by state but doesn't releasing a recorded conversation without consent constitute a crime? I'm not suggesting that is the right move by the coach by any means, just technically speaking

Looks like parents are freaking out with the loss of all of the privilege included in an athletic scholarship vs an academic one.

Room, board, meal plan, maybe books, tutor, free clothes, athletic training facility access and the paid stipend from the school (up to $5k I think depending on “cost of living”) etc probably now not included in scholarship.

Got to be a shock to the pocket book

Washington State is a two party consent state, meaning you can’t record a call unless all parties consent. But where do you see a call was recorded? Just because you can’t record the call doesn’t mean you can’t tell everyone what was said. This isn’t Nam

On Saturday, Washington State football player Kassidy Woods told head coach Nick Rolovich that he was opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. Rolovich, per a recording of the phone call, had “nothing wrong with that.”

The Pac-12 is planning a mammoth loan program that would provide an escape hatch for cash-strapped athletic departments in the event the football season is canceled because of coronavirus, according to internal documents and conference sources.

Football accounts for the majority of each department’s revenue, generating in excess of $50 million dollars in ticket sales and media rights alone.

The loan program would be large enough to cover that loss for each school, if needed:

According to a series of emails obtained by the Hotline through public records requests, the loan would provide a maximum of $83 million for each university at a rate of 3.75 percent over 10 years.

Each athletic department could decide whether it wanted to participate in the program.

If all 12 opted for the maximum amount, the total would be $996 million.

“The conference is trying to be nimble and give schools some options,’’ a source said.

However, multiple sources indicated that not every school would make use of the loan, and some would seek substantially less than the maximum allowable. If the Pac-12 plays a full football season, the plan could be pushed aside entirely.

The idea is popular with university presidents because the loan would allow schools to bridge the coronavirus crisis without having the implement massive budget cuts that could include widespread layoffs and possibly the elimination of Olympic sports teams, which do not generate a profit.

Yeah, just read that.  What's a little more debt among friends?

It could lead to UCLA & USC looking to bail to the east in a few years, as the "loans" aren't t begin payback until the end of current GoR's...

Thus, if more revenues can be had, by aligning with powers as Texas & Oklahoma (while bringing UW/ UO/ UA/ ASU & CU) it is possible...

Throwback of the day:
That time Arizona State was 20+ seconds away from winning (at least a share of) the national title:

The 1996 Arizona State Sun Devils football team represented the Arizona State University in the 1996 NCAA Division I-A college football season. The team's ...
1996 record‎: ‎11–1 (8–0 Pac-10)
Coaches‎: ‎No. 4
Conference‎: ‎Pacific-10 Conference
Head coach‎: ‎Bruce Snyder‎ (5th season)

This could also be seen as the moment Ohio State bagan the journey back to power, winning a BCS title 5 years later...

Pac-12 CEOs vote to jump back into college football in 2020 with a 7-game schedule beginning Nov. 6-7

By Ken Goe | The Oregonian/OregonLive

The Pac-12 will be back in the football business in November, the conference announced Thursday.  Pac-12 teams will play a seven-game, conference-only regular season followed by a conference championship game on Dec. 18 at the home stadium of the divisional champion with the best record. No fans will be permitted.

The plan was hammered out in a meeting of Pac-12 presidents and chancellors on Thursday. It caps a tumultuous last six weeks as the conference twisted and turned while trying to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.

University of Oregon president Michael Schill is the chair of the Pac-12 CEO group,.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes and all those connected to Pac-12 sports remains our guiding light and No. 1 priority,” Schill said in a statement released by the conference. “Our CEO Group has taken a measured and thoughtful approach to today’s decision, including extensive consultation with stakeholders on the evolving information and data related to health and safety.”

The Pac-12 announced on Aug. 11 it would not play football this fall because of lingering medical questions about COVID-19, the novel coronavirus.

Three weeks later, the conference announced a deal with Quidel Corporation that would allow schools to test daily for the virus and get rapid results. That put a fall season back into the realm of possibility.

Last week, the Pac-12 announced the presidents and chancellors would meet today and come to a final decision.

By going ahead, the Pac-12 becomes the fifth Power Five conference to play this fall. The ACC, Big 12 and SEC all previously announced plans to play in 2020, although each has different coronavirus plans and protocols. ACC and Big 12 teams have been playing. The SEC is set to begin this week.

The Big Ten initially decided not to play this fall, but reversed itself last week after the conference also was able to secure the ability to rapid test daily. The Big Ten will resume on Oct. 23.

The Pac-12 had some issues the other conferences did not, among them more restrictive public health provisions in California and Oregon, and a stubborn wildfire problem.

California and Oregon have eased restrictions on teams practicing and playing, which helped pave the way for Thursday’s decision.

Men’s and women’s basketball may resume on Nov. 25 with the approval of the schools' local health authorities.

Due to starting so late, fewer games, and the lack of respect for the conference, not sure a PAC 12 team has much of a chance to make the CFP.

Definitely, 7 regular season games won't be enough.  tOSU's 8 though will be just right.

So now all of a sudden they choose to play? What happened to all the players who chose to opt out of the season? Are they going to play as well?

I mean the PAC 12 always intended to play at some point. They were talking about the Spring.

I presume players who opted out will not play, just like in all the other conferences, with no loss to eligibility. Why would it be different for the PAC 12?

The Big 10 and the Pac 12 really leave no room to speak of for make up games.  Better hope everyone remains healthy.

Yep.

Though are we doing make up games in the Big 12? Well hopefully we won't have any conference games cancelled and we won't have to find out.
