I could actually see Tom Herman doing pretty well at UCLA. Yeah, they would have an annual loss to Oregon State or Colorado or whoever, but as long as USC doesn’t return to perennial top ten status they’d probably win the PAC 12 south once every 4-5 years. I don’t think he’d be consistently out coached in the PAC like he was in the Big 12.

what is the coke and strip club scene like in LA?.....asking for Tom

what if Urban and his new girl friend end up at USC?

could Tom get Charlie for DC?.....or maybe Manny......or would he call Todd and ask him since he probably has the coke and stripper connect already lined out in LA

Cals fully vaccinated so what's the issue?

Cal is the issue. Cal and the City of Berkeley.

The City insisted on testing the entire team after a few players tested positive before Cal played Arizona. That revealed many positive but asymptomatic cases. The University then forced those players into isolation for a period of time, despite some of them subsequently testing negative. I'm not sure if the overreach was team-wide testing, the isolation period, or both.

Mainly just as a testament to my own madness, I am bumping a 3 week old thread to document that I am watching the very last Pac 12 After Dark game of the season that (1) means absolutely nothing since both teams will not be bowl eligible and are only playing tonight because the game was postponed, (2) is going on during exponentially more consequential conference title games (but Big Ten game is out of reach and the ACC game is…well, just the ACC/yawn game - I didn’t even see a thread for it), (3) was bumped to Fox Sports 2 due to basketball, and (4) will have no effect on anything.

However, I’m here and still enjoying. I’m both loving the throwback unis but also missing the classic matte Cal helmets (one of my personal faves of all CFB helmets).

CFB nerd/hard case out.

5 HOURS AGO       ZACH BARNETT

UCLA pulled out of the Holiday Bowl hours before kickoff and NC State isn't happy about it

The Wolfpack were unaware UCLA was having virus issues until the game was canceled, less than five hours before kickoff.

The Holiday Bowl became the fifth bowl canceled so far in the 2021-22 season, but the San Diego-based event may have set the record for the shortest amount of time between the announcement and scheduled kickoff. UCLA announced it would not play at 3:30 p.m. ET; the game was scheduled to kick at 8.

"I think Dave will tell you it’s about ongoing thing," UCLA head coach Chip Kelly said Tuesday. "If someone comes down with symptoms later on this afternoon they will get tested. We will test kids up until game time. We have our fingers crossed... our mindset is if we have 11 we will play.”

Reportedly, the Bruins did not have the numbers necessary along the defensive line in order to safely play the game. Also reportedly, UCLA's virus outbreak began during the team's bowl week excursion to Sea World.

Either way, NC State, UCLA, Fox and other entities spent their Christmas in San Diego for nothing.

"Felt lied to, to be honest," NC State head coach Dave Doeren said. "We felt like UCLA probably knew something was going on, didn't tell anybody on our side. We had no clue they were up against that. I don't feel like it was very well handled from their university. It would have been great to have had a heads up so two or three days ago we could have found a Plan B. Disappointing."

"We are extremely grateful to the Holiday Bowl, students, fans, sponsors and the people of San Diego for their support this week," UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond said. "We are deeply disappointed for our young men in the football program that worked extremely hard for this opportunity. My heart goes out to them. The health and safety of our students will always be our North Star."

It's anyone's guess how expenses will be covered for NC State's cross-country trip with no game played. The ACC was to receive a $6.5 million payout that would have covered NC State's trip, but with no game for Fox to sell ads against, it remains to be seen how the payout will be handled.

More pressing for Doeren and company, the Wolfpack went from a chance to win 10 games for the second time in school history, to flying to San Diego for no reason, and had to process that reality four and a half hours before kickoff.

For @Sbbruin

Kelly has one year left on his contract, his buyout drops to zero in a matter of days, and the results on the field could be argued either way.

DEC 31, 2021          ZACH BARNETT

Report: No guarantee Chip Kelly returns to UCLA

UCLA's season ended on a weird note, and I'm not talking about pulling out of the Holiday Bowl with no warning hours before kickoff.  With the end of the season, Chip Kelly is now under contract only for 2022, but that's not all. As of today, his buyout is $9 million. As of Jan. 16, the number drops to zero.

Kelly could leave for another job at no cost to him, and UCLA could let him go at no cost to the school.  On top of all this, the Kelly tenure is at a point where it really could go either way.

On the one hand, Kelly is 18-25 (16-18 Pac-12) -- a far cry from the days when Kelly ran the Pac-10 at Oregon.  On the other, Kelly's 2021 season was his best in Westwood thus far. The Bruins went 8-4 and won their final three games.

Is that enough to sign Kelly to a massive new deal? Probably not. Is that enough to simply let him go? No, it's not.

As he lays out the state of play, Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury-News writes:

To be clear: We believe it’s more likely than not that Kelly will coach the Bruins next season. But by no means is his return guaranteed, according to sources familiar with the situation.

As he writes, there are three options before UCLA:

-- Let him walk, which then involves resetting the program in the middle of January, a headache of an endeavor at a disadvantageous time.

-- Extend Kelly, but the chess move there is finding a number that works for both sides. Too much money and it exacerbates UCLA's budgetary issues (the department is carrying a multi-year deficit of $40 million), too little and Kelly could feel insulted and walk on his own.

-- Let him coach 2022 on the final year of his contract. This is nearly unprecedented in modern-day college football, and for good reason. It would place the program in yearlong purgatory and would essentially become an invitation for UCLA's rivals to negative recruit against them.

All in all, it's a precarious situation for the program, and resolution should come at any point in the next two weeks...... or it could drag out for the next 52 weeks. Stay tuned.

It’s a game of chicken right now.  Chip hired Sexton to get his extension, and I am 100% certain Sexton engineered that Oregon dance, thinking Jarmond would panic and up the ante. He didn’t blink.  Chip wants to stay, but he thinks he has leverage he doesn’t have.  If he walks, most of the fan base would be just fine with that.  What has he done to deserve a hefty extension?  8-4?  Not one win over a +.500 team.  With a very experienced team.  Another failed season in my book.  Word is he has an extension sitting on his desk but doesn’t like it.  Much more palatable termination than the $9 mil deal he’s had.  If he wants to take an NFL OC job, fine. He won’t get a better job than UCLA ever again.  Long story short- fuck Chip.

Can UCLA and Chip Kelly agree on a contract extension?

Quote

Jan. 16 is when the $9M buyout in Kelly’s contract is void as the Bruins’ coach enters the final year of his deal

Four Pac-12 football programs experienced coaching changes during one of the most chaotic stretches in recent conference history, but there could be more upheaval to come.

On Jan. 16, UCLA might be in the market for a head coach to replace Chip Kelly.

Don’t be fooled by the eight-win season, the turn of the calendar or the general lack of rumor and speculation. Kelly’s situation is anything but settled.

To be clear: We believe it’s more likely than not Kelly will coach the Bruins next season. But by no means is his return guaranteed, according to sources familiar with the situation.

As of today, in fact, Kelly is a lame duck.

The 2021 season ended Tuesday, when the Bruins pulled out of the Holiday Bowl because of COVID. Today is effectively the first day of 2022 for the program. It’s also the fifth and final season covered by Kelly’s contract.

The Bruins have discussed an extension with Kelly and his agent, Jimmy Sexton, but nothing has been signed.

The mere fact that Kelly has entered lame duck territory is all the evidence required to understand the fragile state of affairs.

The next two weeks will be tense. On Jan. 16, the $9 million buyout in Kelly’s contract drops to zero. At that point, he could walk away from UCLA, or the school could cut him loose.

Several factors point to the two sides reaching an agreement, and we’ll address those momentarily. But to fully comprehend the dynamics, a brief overview of the Kelly era is required.

Kelly’s appointment at the conclusion of the 2017 season was accompanied by soaring expectations, as UCLA fans hoped the revolutionary coach would recreate his Oregon magic and deliver the Bruins’ first conference championship in two decades.

It took Kelly several recruiting cycles to craft a roster of his liking – in style, substance and preference, he is markedly different from his predecessor, Jim Mora.

But the on-field results suffered during the overhaul: The Bruins were 3-9 in Kelly’s first year and 4-8 in his second, with unseemly losses in both seasons that punctured hopes of a swift turnaround.

The outlook began to brighten in 2020 and continued this fall, albeit in a manner that delayed contract discussions:

The combination of three consecutive losing seasons and all the empty seats at the Rose Bowl left athletic director Martin Jarmond and the administration with little motivation to offer Kelly an extension prior to the 2021 season.

Then wobbly play for the first two months – the Bruins were just 5-4 when November arrived – provided little impetus to fast-track negotiations.

When UCLA finished with a three-game winning streak, including a 62-33 victory over USC, the dynamics began to shift in Kelly’s favor. His work with the roster had finally paid dividends; for the first time in four years, the Bruins had real momentum.

But in those heady days after the regular season, the sides were unable to reach an agreement.

Now here we are … past the early-signing period … fairly deep into the offseason hiring cycle … in lame duck territory … two weeks from the buyout clause expiring … and there is no deal.

Which factors might impact the outcome? Let’s examine:

— Kelly earned $5.6 million for the 2021 season, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the Pac-12. He wants a fair offer but isn’t motivated by money to the same extent as many of his peers.

He could walk away Jan. 16 and seek employment as an NFL coordinator or quarterback coach if a respectable offer isn’t forthcoming.

But that course of action would force Kelly to abandon his players and coaching staff, including two recently hired assistants, at a date so late they would be left dangling.

— Meanwhile, Jarmond, the second-year athletic director, must protect a department carrying a multi-year deficit in excess of $40 million. He cannot sign a head coach with one winning season in four years to a contract extension that includes a massive buyout clause.

But a hard-line stance that prompts Kelly to leave would put the Bruins in a poor strategic position: The middle of January is a suboptimal time to begin a coaching search, especially in a market that was short on supply in the first place.

Would there be candidates willing to accept a mid-level salary within the Power Five hierarchy who would be demonstrably better coaches than Chip Kelly?

— There is a third option: The sides don’t agree on an extension, and Kelly coaches in ’22 as a lame duck.

But that doesn’t work for anyone, including the players.

It’s clear UCLA’s progress with the roster and results isn’t matched by an equivalent increase in enthusiasm from the fans. Many supporters remain scarred by previous shortcomings and don’t believe a few late-season wins are enough to justify a significant extension.

If UCLA has a good candidate, it might make sense to just cut Chip loose.  Bruins need a better recruiter for their next head coach going forward.

Absolutely this.  You need the horses to compete at the highest level.  Chip thinks he’s so smart he can turn any roster into champs.  Uh, no.

Of course Kyle Wittingham proving to be the exception to the rule.  He has always gotten the most out of undervalued recruits.

How many more years is Kyle Whittingham gonna keep coaching ??

(A few articles in past thought the DC Morgan Scalley was their Head Coach in waiting before his dumbass "racial slur text" incident.)

I’m gonna say 2-3.  But a win here and dropping the mic would be pretty awesome.  One of those perfect coaches for the right school.  Who knows if he’d be successful at a bigger name program.

New Wazzu RB coach and family...

Now here's a job announcement you don't see every day

Zach Barnett  8 hrs ago

Quote

Washington State's new running backs coach Mark Atuaia has a law degree, a pop star wife... and now a burgeoning rap career?

On Monday, Mark Atuaia was among five assistants formally hired by Washington State. The former running backs coach for Bronco Mendenhall at BYU and Virginia, he'll coach the same position in Pullman.

Atuaia's journey to Pullman is a long and interesting one. A former Cougar running back himself in the mid-90s, he returned to BYU as a student assistant in 2005. After graduating from BYU's law school and earning a master's in public administration, he went to work for the athletics department as the assistant AD for student services. He became the running backs coach the following year.

"Mark has a proven track record of recruiting and developing some of the toughest RB rooms in the country," said Cougars head coach Jake Dickert. "His passion and energy are easy to see and I believe our players will excel with his coaching style."

Atuaia's wife, Elizabeth, was a member of the 1980s pop group The Jets, a family band of eight brothers and sisters. Here they are performing "Crush on You" from their platinum-selling, self-titled debut album. It simply does not get more 1980s than this.

Turns out, Mom's not the only member of the Atuaia household with some musical talent.

To celebrate his move from Charlottesville to Pullman, Mark and some of the couple's seven children put together a video for this original number.

Props to Coach Atuaia. Many of us do not have the talent or the cojones to share this with the world

Just crazy times at UCLA I guess...

Source: UCLA loses another coordinator

After eight seasons at Chip Kelly's side at Oregon, the NFL and UCLA, Jerry Azzinaro has resigned, sources tell FootballScoop.

ZACH BARNETT     33 MINUTES AGO

UCLA defensive coordinator Jerry Azzinaro has resigned --  Azzinaro is the second Bruin coordinator to leave the staff this week. Offensive coordinator Justin Frye took the offensive line job at Ohio State.

Azzinaro is a longtime lieutenant for Chip Kelly, dating back to when Kelly ascended to the head coach's chair at Oregon in 2009. Azzinaro coached Kelly's defensive lines all four years in Eugene and all four of his NFL seasons -- three in Philadelphia and one in San Francisco.

After one season as Cal's defensive line coach, Azzinaro re-united with Kelly as his defensive coordinator at UCLA, lasting all four seasons thus far in Westwood.

This week's news must be viewed within the prism of Kelly's contract. More specifically, as of this coming Sunday, it would cost UCLA nothing to fire its head coach of four mostly-underwhelming seasons.

Azz was the worst fucking D coodinator in FBS, bar none.  If he didn't go, Chip should be canned for that level of mismanagement alone.

5 days and counting on Chip's buyout expiring.
