My job has sent me out here for an assignment, with a small chance of it being a permanent relocation. Any surly posters familiar with the area? It’s hot as fuck right now (record setting temps), but this place is beautiful. I’m going to have some free time this weekend to explore. Any suggestions?

I brought my golf clubs, and there’s a ton of good areas to hike. But I don’t want to die of heat exhaustion lol. Seriously. It’s obviously hot in Texas, but something about this heat really takes a lot out of you, even if you’re only outside for 30 minuets at a time. I was thinking about testing it this weekend and bringing a ton of water. Either way, the city is beautiful.

I like Phoenix - if you like deserts (and I do), it's really pretty, and you're close to so much natural beauty. If you're ok with getting up early, you can do Camelback Mountain before things get dangerously hot.

When I was there last I took my boss and a partner to Barrio Cafe since they wanted to see a hipper younger restaurant and it was terrific.

The key to living in PHX is to exercise  in the morning and get drunk at night.  Stay inside and sleep during the day when it’s hot as hell.

Any recommendations for places to get drunk at night? In Austin, I was more into the dive bar scene in south Austin or Rainey St. Trying to stay the hell away from anything that resembles dirty 6th, or even west 6th to a certain extent.

Do you have a more specific location? There's a lot in Scottsdale, Tempe, etc and downtown PHX can be OK. Crescent Ballroom near downtown was a good spot to eat/drink and see a band.

But be warned they are notoriously diligent and tough hunting for DUIs.

Dive bars are pretty location based. I’m in old town so I frequent The Well Bar, TT roadhouse, DJ’s and Coachhouse.  There good ones in central/uptown Phoenix and Tempe that I’ve been to, but can’t think of any specific names.

Fyi; the local Texas football game watch is at Thirsty Lion in Tempe Marketplace.

Stayed at Dove Mountain (between Phoenix and Tucson) in January.  Amazing area, great weather and golf.  I cannot imagine how hot it is right now.    Though it may not be much worse than Austin right now...

Phoenix is a GREAT dive bar town since the place really came up in the 50s and 60s. Bikini Lounge, Rogue Bar, Swizzle Inn, and Shady's were my spots.

Listen to this man. Those are way more central PHX than my suggestion.

Bumping this since we are going to Scottsdale this weekend (5 days).  Playing golf a few of them but need some more ideas: good cocktails, restaurants, shopping, etc.

Already going to Elements and Too of the Rock.  Thanks!

Anything worth a fuck going on? I'm Phoenix until Saturday. Going to Suns game Thursday night and staying at the Marriott in Chandler. Haven't been to Phoenix in 15 years so no idea

Everything is open so the usual applies.

1) Old Town Scottsdale

2) Tempe (Mill Ave)

then there's several bars in Chandler and everywhere else.

I'd add Talking Stick pool as an option if the W and Valley Ho aren't open yet.

Maybe it was just the atmosphere because we were in town for a football game on a Saturday night, but Pedal Haus in Tempe was a really cool bar. Lots of eye candy and cool place with good beer to boot.

Phoenix has been growing as rapidly as Austin has, last time I was in Scottsdale it felt like a mini Vegas in Old Town, but was also during the Waste Management open. Tempe is more chill and less upscale. Can’t say much about dt Phoenix cause I’ve yet to stay long enough.

Mesa’s downtown is growing with it aimed at less chains and more small businesses

If you care to hike this is probably the last weekend or two to do it in Phoenix with it being doable.

Bump... Headed there next week for 5 days. Staying in Chandler and the office is in Tempe. I went a few months back but only for 2 days and didn't really do shit. Any decent dinner spots for a team dinner around Chandler? Last trip we went to The Keg but trying to do something different. Also thinking of hitting a Coyotes game on Monday never been to that arena.

Chandler sucks big sweaty donkey balls. The Keg is fine dining for that suburban wasteland. Enjoy the drive from Chandler to Glendale during rush hour. Pack a snack.

I used to spend a lot of time at Four Peaks Brewing in Tempe.

Barhopping the ASU strip is a fine idea as well.

Ruster’s Rooste is a good bet for a team dinner. Check it out.

Fuck the dumb shit. You need to come to grips with them having rec. You gonna diiiiieeeeee! 😂

Look for a disp called Oasis. Get some “memory loss” from them. It’s excellent.

Cart prices are pretty decent too. CO is better, but AZ isn’t far behind.

Yea my first trip I had no idea it was legal. Got really high and slept through a morning team building thing. Luckily there was "outage" I had to take care of. I went to zen leaf last time

Man, the salt cellar was fucking awesome. St Pauli girl in an icy glass 20 feet below the earth and a shitload of skrimps and oysters always hit the spot.

Stuffed lobster.  Thank me later

What part of chandler? This is going to sound weird as shit, but check out downtown gilbert. If Tempe and Scottsdale conceived a child during a drunken hook up, that child grew up and moved to the suburbs, that's about what is going on in gilbert within the last 5 years or so.

This is a terrible take.

Interesting necrobump. That said, it wasn't a terrible take 13 months ago and it still isn't. Chandler is suburban hell.

Well as the black adders says, Hell is for people who like doing things they do in hell; like fornicating.

Grimaldi’s? Are you serious? That’s like saying go to Ruth’s Chris or Cheesecake Factory. The Grimaldis here in DFW are notorious for lousy service and crazy expensive pizza.

Go to Pizzeria Bianco which is always on best of the US lists and was featured on Chefs Table: Pizza

Just got back from a long weekend with other 50 year old dudes.  Would recommend a Phoenix Coyotes game.  They are playing on campus at ASU while a new stadium is being built.  Very small arena - all seats are very close to this ice.  Golf is fantastic (obviously).  Casino was OK.  Best meal was Tomaso's.  Some of the best Italian food I've ever had.

Well, we have a lot of good breweries so you should be covered there.  Some of my favorites are Huss, Wren House, Az Wilderness, Fate, Pedal Haus.  Downtown Mesa has Oro Brewing and Beer Research Institute plus a bunch of thrift and vintage shops.  (Republica Empanada is really good there, too).

Outside of that golfing ($$$$)and hiking (free) are great right now.

Moving out there in 2 weeks. Don’t know a soul. Where the horns at?

Do you know what part of town you will be living in? It's a huge, sprawling city and where you live will have a big influence on your quality of life. I lived in PHX for 18 years with 17 of those being in Arcadia. Absolutely loved that neighborhood and would happily move back at some point down the road.
