Galvan catching is big time trouble.

I wasn’t thrilled with his defense last year but I also think he ran out of gas towards the end of the season. He was miles ahead of Schuessler as a defender.

They also seem to like the freshman catcher Cole Chamberlain so I don’t think the leash will be super long if Galvan does have issues.

3 left-handed starters would be something after not having a lefty who threw harder than 87 MPH last year.

That caught my eye, as well. When was the last time that occured at Texas (if ever, and if it actually occurs).

Also, should we even want to start three-straight lefties? I guess if they're the best options, go for it.

A&M started 3 lefties during certain stretches last year. Prager, Sdao and Lamkin.

Luke Harrison going from almost unusable last season to a Saturday starter is a big development.

If Mercer can get healthy and maybe become a possible closer this pitching staff will really start to come together.

Rodriguez is a switch hitter and gives you another lefty hitter against right-handed pitching, along with Winfield and Belyeu.

Trying to get as many bats in the lineup as possible, Schuessler has been the leading hitter on the team, so he gets the nod at first, when not catching.

Farmer was giving Gasparino a real battle for centerfield. If Gasparino goes cold with the bat, Farmer could get some playing time.

Having a back end of Ruger and Mercer would be fucking awesome

Players from this recruiting class not on the roster:

RHP Matthew Millett

RHP Jackson Jordan

LHP Cooper Powell

Millett and Jordan were let go from their letter of intents back in the summer. Powell was a fall casualty along with Casey Cummings, Seth Werchan, Brandon Bertsch and Walker Polk.

I am getting a season ticket this year for the first time. Did my selection a week or so ago. Can anyone tell me when I can actually access and download the ticket?

You'll receive an email notification with instructions on adding them to your wallet (or transfer 😮) from Texas Atheletics. Usually get them a week or two before the season starts. So early February.

Also, for lots of games (midweek games especially), season ticket seats are just a "suggestion" - my kids have sat first row behind home plate at many games despite our tickets being much, much, much further back.

But for bigger games/SEC series, don't do that.

Blake Munroe

We’ve been getting A LOT of Jonah Williams questions lately, so I spoke with some sources regarding where things currently stand with him.

Williams, an early enrollee, will be a two-sport athlete on the Forty Acres. He’ll attempt to balance both football and baseball, which is no easy task.

Toward the end of football season, Williams fractured his clavicle on his left arm. Both staffs do not want to rush him and have been working to rehab that injury as efficiently as possible.

One source close to the baseball program told me that there is no definitive timetable for Williams return.

“I’m not sure. Hoping to be cleared for some stuff and we’ll go from there,” said the source.

Williams is doing certain work outs trying to balance being in both baseball and football shape at the same time.

He also works with both the football and baseball staff at different parts of the day.

As for where he’ll end up on the diamond, I’ve been told that will all work itself out as he continues to get healthier. On the mound or in the outfield are the two options, but the quicker path to earlier playing time will be pitching… for now.

Per OTF:

Schloss said today that Whitehead is a way out from contributing, and Grubbs didn't throw at all in the fall, so he is behind the other starting options (which aligns with what I heard).

Spencer and Harrison were the first two names mentioned when he ran through the options for starting pitching. Said they didn't stretch guys out in the fall so everything was a short stint. They will have a better idea over the next few weeks on what the rotation will look like.

Below is the full write-up:

Spoiler

On February 14th, the Longhorns will take the field at Globe Life in Arlington for the first time under new Texas Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle. With just 21 days away from that first pitch, I spoke to a couple of sources to see where things stand.

Pitching:
Two players in particular have carved out starting roles on the mound. LHP Jared Spencer (Indiana State) looks to be your Friday starter, while LHP Luke Harrison will take the Saturday slot.

Spencer has been particularly impressive from what I've been told, with multiple people raving about his abilities. As for Harrison, it sounds like pitching coach Max Weiner has helped him come on really strong (get ready for one heck of a breaking ball).

Sunday and the weekday starter(s) are still up in the air at this time.

As for Ruger Riojas, I'm told that he's the best all around pitcher on the staff. Look for him to have a very similar role to what Evan Aschenbeck had for Texas A&M last season. He's hands down the best reliever, but may not be seen as a closer.

True freshmen Drew Rerick, Jason Flores and Dylan Volantis should all see playing time on the mound this season as well.

Fan favorite Ace Whitehead is still battling back from surgery recovery and there is no timetable for his return.

Projected Lineup:
Catcher - Ryan Galvan
1B - Kimble Schuessler
2B - Ethan Mendoza
3B - Adrian Rodriguez
SS - Jalin Flores
LF - Easton Winfield
CF - Will Gasparino
RF - Max Belyeu

It wasn't long ago that we weren't sure who will take the starting roles at 1B, 3B and CF, but I've been told that Schuessler, Rodriguez and Gasparino have came on strong.

As for Rodriguez, it sounds like he's the best freshman position player out of the bunch at this point. The staff loves that he's a switch hitter and have full faith in him, despite being new on campus.

Jonah Williams:
In case you missed my update on Williams from yesterday...

Pretty annoyed at Texas Baseball social media today. The post they made was “it’s Roger Clemens days until baseball”… Literally the best college pitcher of all time wore that number and his name wasn’t Clemens.

God dammit guys.

damn right walter white GIF by Breaking Bad

Schiraldi was the ace on that '83 team and also the team MVP along with being named MVP of the CWS...

And that other #21?

19 game winner in '85, along with 14 shutouts and 2 no hitters during his time at the 40.

Pretty interesting about hearing what many people expected that there was a toxic atmosphere on the team at the end of last season and players were glad the season was over. The Aggies like to talk about how Earley kept their roster together, but getting Schlossnagle and his staff at Texas helped keep this roster together and then to improve and develop it.

That indeed Harrison is going to be the Saturday starter. This shows what a competent pitching coach can do. They really must like what they see for this to happen so soon. It does look like Harrison was not ready to pitch last season and was rushed back too soon. Can't wait to see the adjustment that Weiner made with his delivery or any other things he helped Luke get back to the form, he had before the surgery.

Hate to hear that Whitehead is a long way from coming back, but certainly understandable under the circumstances. As stated, it's great to see a coach that recognizes this and allows a pitcher to heal first and then help him get back to form.

Pleased to hear that Riojas will as I expected will be used as a "Swiss Army Knife" in the bullpen. Schloss will use him as he did Aschenbeck at A&M, and that flexibility is just so valuable for a pitching staff. He could probably be a starter and with the Sunday and weekend starting jobs still up for grabs, it was probably considered. I think that his bullpen availability for many more games during a tough SEC season will be much more needed and more importantly the coaching staff does too.

Hopefully Grubbs can work his way back and fill a starting pitching role or whatever role the coaching staff sees fit for him. There are several arms that will be looked at for remaining starting roles and middle, short and setup roles in relief. The transfer from LSU Aiden Moffet,  is another guy that can be a good starter. I watched him pitch and he has good stuff but has command issues. He could be sort of like LBJ was, it would be another feather in Weiner's cap if he could turn this guy around with his control.

The name that wasn't mentioned at all and I don't know what his status is was Mercer. They didn't say anything about a closer and that was a bad omission to me. Is Mercer back healthy yet or not. Besides the Sunday and weekend starter, the closer role is the main concern. Mercer has always been slated for that role, and we all know how important it would if he can indeed be effective as was once expected. Duplantier might be the other option for closer if not Mercer and then Duplantier could be a setup man.

Glad to see Rodriguez is so well thought of and will get the starting nod at third base. In the past there were some Freshmen that were able to start right away and contribute, really hope this is the case here, another lefty hitter in the lineup would really be a plus.

The starting lineup doesn't really have many other surprises with Schuessler starting at first for his bat and Galvan the starter behind the plate. Will have to see what the Freshman catcher Chamberlain can do to see if he can fit into the catching triangle along with Schuessler.

Newcomers Rodriguez and Winfield add some experience and hitting to the lineup and with the glove.

Good to hear about Johah Williams and how he is in good spirits about things despite his injury. He is another pitcher that could be used in some compacity, with him being a lefty with good velocity. He will also be allowed to heal before the staff determines what role he will play. I'm sure that Sark and Schloss have had a talk about this along with both training staffs.

Can't wait for the season to start and see how it all comes together as Texas enters the SEC. It will be tough, but this team has talent and now a coaching staff that knows how to use and develop that talent.

D1baseball's schedule analysis for Texas

Spoiler

Texas makes its SEC debut this spring with a star-studded cast of opponents in conference play. The Longhorns have a pair of quality pre-conference classics and a strong SEC schedule that will serve as a solid welcome as they join the best baseball conference. We dive into the Longhorns’ schedule …

Biggest Pro: All of the Longhorns’ opponents except four had RPIs under 200.

Biggest Con: There’s only one non-conference road game but there are six neutral site games.

Toughest Non-Conference Weekend: The Longhorns open in Arlington with Louisville, SEC foe Ole Miss, and (former Big 12 mate Oklahoma State). The Horns also head to Las Vegas where they face Illinois, Texas Tech, and Washington.

  • Home: Santa Clara [3] (RPI #159, 26-26), Dartmouth [3] (RPI #283, 13-25)
  • Away: None
  • Neutral: Oklahoma State (RPI #11, 40-17), Ole Miss (RPI #33, 27-29), Illinois (RPI #49, 34-19), Texas Tech (RPI #58, 33-26), Louisville (RPI #60, 32-24), Washington (RPI #160, 19-31)

Midweek Game Analysis: All the games are at home, except for one trip to San Marcos which is the only road game in the non-conference. The midweek highlights are home games against Lamar, Sam Houston, Texas State, Houston, and UTSA.

  • Home: Lamar (RPI #67, RPI 44-15), Sam Houston (RPI #76, 34-24), Texas State (RPI #111, 27-28), Houston (RPI #113, 26-28), UTSA (RPI #121, 32-24), Incarnate Word (RPI #152, 32-29), Texas-Arlington (RPI #191, 22-34), UTRGV (RPI #204, 29-25), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (RPI #222, 21-35), Houston Christian (RPI #242, 18-31), Prairie View (RPI #266, 26-25)
  • Away: Texas State (RPI #111, 27-28)
  • Neutral: None

Non-Conference Tally:  It’s two weekends away from home against quality opposition, which will help the RPI. All the home midweek games will hurt, but like many SEC clubs, the conference slate will bolster the RPI. The non-conference RPI can be a hindrance on the cutlines, but if Texas wins enough games, that won’t matter.
