I guess I completely forgot about the Grad student housing taking 500ish parking spots in the baseball parking garage.

and now I see that anyone who doesnt have season tickets now has to park in the LBJ lots and use a shuttle bus, in what UT laughingly describes as a "slight" change in public parking... yeah very slight, go from parking in either the garage or Lot 110... to all the way across the damn highway to the LBJ lots

there are gonna be a shitload of people used to parking in 110 or just paying for a ticket that are going to show up for single games very late and very pissed.

we had a 4 min walk at globe life, from car to gate  !

Chip Shots: Texas baseball fans will take in new faces (and some facial hair) in home opener against Houston

Spoiler

In today's Chip Shots, Texas first-year baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle explains why he is allowing players to sport facial hair this season. The 16th-ranked Longhorns (2-1) play Houston (2-1) in Texas' home opener Tuesday at 5:30 pm CT at Disch-Falk Field with freshman RHP Jason Flores starting on the mound.

Chip Brown

AUSTIN, Texas — When Texas baseball comes out of the dugout Tuesday at 5:30 pm CT against Houston for the Longhorns' home opener at Disch-Falk Field, fans will be taking in the team's new faces (and their facial hair) under first-year coach Jim Schlossnagle.

For as long as anyone can remember, Texas baseball has been like the New York Yankees when it comes to discouraging facial hair.

Schlossnagle said he made a deal with his players that if they wanted to have the option of facial hair they had to get the team's grade point average (GPA) up and have no slip-ups off the field.

"I know that's been a thing here at Texas on the facial hair," Schlossnagle said. "But, you know, I've learned to pick my battles. It's like being a parent."

Schlossnagle said he met with the team's veterans after taking the Texas job to get a feel for the dynamics of the locker room and to lay down some laws.

"I talked to the older guys about it, and I said, there's going to be some people at Texas that don't like it [players having facial hair]," Schlossnagle said. "And I understand that, believe me. I came from a place [Texas A&M] with a lot of traditions.

"So, I just said, 'Hey, you guys act the right way on and off the field. The team didn't have a very good GPA. I said, 'If you guys clean your act up in the classroom, act the right way off the field. Then, then I got your back on this facial hair thing, and we'll see how it goes.' I mean, they've still got to continue to do that."

At least 14 players on the Longhorns' 41-man roster have sported facial hair, including catcher Rylan Galvan, shortstop Jalin Flores and pitchers Luke Harrison, Ruger Riojas, Thomas Burns and Andre Duplantier.

Left-handed Indiana State senior transfer pitcher Jared Spencer, who pitched 5.2 scoreless innings in Texas' season-opening loss to Louisville, also has long, curly locks that would've never survived under former coach Augie Garrido.

"I had the same rules in high school where we weren't allowed to grow facial hair or long hair," said Harrison (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who was rocking a full mustache in his win over Ole Miss on Saturday.

"I'd like to say I would've had facial hair earlier, but I probably couldn't grow it. But, it is what it is. It's just fun to kind of have people like [Jared] Spencer let the hair down a little bit. We've got some good facial hair going on. It's a lot of fun."

Schlossnagle is in his 24th season as a head coach. A younger version of himself might have been so open-minded, he said.

"It's like parenting," Schlossnagle said. "Is [Texas junior catcher] Rylan Galvan a bad guy because he's got a beard? No, he's not. He's an awesome kid. And 15 years ago, I would have forced something on him. But I think  you've got to let these kids be who they are."

I would have liked the team veterans to be supportive of the tradition and bring the youngsters into it, rather than push for a change.

Also, SIAP, but here are highlights from games 2 and 3 of the Shriners Showdown. You may want to watch on mute, as it's just baseball themed music in both.

Game 2 (Ole Miss):

Game 3 (Oklahoma State):

Gasparino mashed a couple of bad pitches like he was Vlad Guerrero.

Yup, still can’t believe there are people on this board that think facial hair and long hair is a big deal and shouldn’t be allowed

biggest take away was team having a low gpa….

While no hippie, I'm pretty liberal with regards to grooming.  I mean, I grew my hair down past my shoulders during covid until I realized I looked like an idiot.  (I then cut it all off, and I still look like an idiot.)

I have always loved the Texas tradition of no names on the jersey and clean cut hair & facial hair.  Sue me.  We are the gold standard, act like it.  If it's actually costing us recruits then I might concede it's a battle that doesn't need to be won, but it seems like Schloss doesn't care regardless so my opinion means jack.

The guy very politely expressed his opinion and you respond with this discourteous bullshit?  If there's a sign of the times, it's not the facial hair.  It's that some people are way too comfortable acting like little cocksuckers.

This type of passive-aggressive response is exactly what one comes to expect.  You're definitely on-brand and probably don't even realize it.

Enjoy the internet, sport.  Try not to get stuffed in a locker in the real world.

Terrible thread title.  Texas baseball had a winning tradition for over 100 years before hiring the current coach, including two national championships before he was even born.

But was it a schwining tradition?

This. The Yankees set the standards for both (no names on jerseys ever and no facial or long hair). It’s a tradition that should be expanded on throughout the sport. No individual is above the team, and you represent the team with class and respect. Kids look up to these players, and as a man there’s nothing “respectful” about having hair down to your neck or a beard. You should take pride in your appearance.

I didn't notice in the videos, but can we please have a rule that our players must wear pants that extend below their knees when on the field?  When did baseball and football become shorts sports and basketball is long pants?

The rule is no hair below the lower lip. Hence Austin Wells’ mustache currently. Other teams can have their players looking like unemployable bums but that doesn’t fly with the Yankees, and I would hope Texas doesn’t abandon it ever either.

Ah, yes, the Yankees pioneered the idea of no names on jerseys 🙄

They’re the only major pro sports organization in the world that has never had a last name appear on any variation of a jersey. Seriously. They also actually did invent numbers on jerseys as well.

You can have whatever facial hair you like but if i can see your skin between the hair, maybe you shouldn't be growing a mustache

I'm convinced that's why George made the rule in '76. It was the 1970's when hair was grown everywhere to the max.  George couldn't grow facial hair which was a hallmark of masculinity at the time.  So nobody else was going to allowed to grow a 'stache or beard and make him feel less masculine.

That's right, Helobotomy, your super special hair rule didn't exist until the seventy-third year of the franchise. 72 years of the Yankees being a classless organization that allowed facial hair. Right?

I will die on the hill that the new trend of the pants looking more like cyclist shorts is pretty dumb. It’s up there with the most douche looks a player can have.

Those short pants would look good if they were combined with stirrups that came up to the bottom of the pants

I remember when everyone thought George Hendrick was some kind of fashion freak for wearing pants to his ankles.

I’m primarily talking about this look. I don’t mind pants at or barely above the knee, and players have worn loose or tight through out the years. I don’t think stirrups make it look any better.

Pants lengths have been up and down through the years. Some players liked showing off the leggings or stirrups. How do you think the Cincinatti Red Stockings and Red Legs got the name before becoming just known as the Cincinatti Reds. They wore the pants at knee length with red socks or stockings

Then players didn't wear the stirrups, and sanitary socks were made with a stirrup like stripe up each side of a sock.

The P. T. Barnum of baseball Bill Veek when he owned the White Sox decided that they should wear these uniforms in 1976.

Ralph Garr In Shorts,1976 White Sox | Mlb uniforms, White sox baseball ...

Some players started wearing longer socks all the way up to or beyond the pants underneath because of what sliding would do in those shorts.
