f this chickenshit trend of canceling games for rpi

are we really cancelling a game? I strongly disagree that playing scrubs has no value. for the unproven pitching staff any outing is a chance to improve. if you want the day off, play backups all over the field and give your starters a day off. as for RPI, whateves, we are a lock for a top 3 national seed as long as we win three of the next four series. probably a lock for a top 8 seed if we win two out of the next four.  RPI doesn't matter for us right now.

I wouldn't expect to see Friday night starter Jared Spencer this weekend against Texas A&M.

The Longhorns continue to get more medical opinions so that they can set a plan for Spencer going forward, but I'm told he will be out for the foreseeable future.

Spencer is going to a specialist tomorrow.

Are we? No. It’s just been suggested (on surly) that we should

And I think it’s chicken shit to schedule a game you will likely just cancel. It’s important and fun for those in state programs to play you. Don’t schedule them if you won’t honor it

Prairie View A&M played Lamar last night and walked or hit 22 batters in a 7-inning run rule.

Lamar dropped about 5 RPI spots by playing the game.

There is an intended strength of schedule metric so RPI does not really matter here. Ducking a Tuesday game seems like a bitch move to me.

That's not how RPI works, but I agree with the rest.

When you play a team that bad, especially at home, you lose RPI points, win or lose.

I believe Lamar dropped about 50 RPI points by winning last night. That will be closer to 100 RPI points for us, even if we win the game. For reference, 145 RPI points currently separate us from #5 RPI Arkansas.

If we play that game, that is fine, but it could be the difference between a top 5 RPI finish and a top 10 RPI finish, depending on how the rest of the season goes. Maybe we go 8-4 in our last 4 conference series and it ends up not mattering, but considering how heavily the committee weighs RPI when seeding teams, it is a risk.

The game should never have been scheduled. That is probably the real issue here.

Playing the game is not going to cost us a #1 national seed, or a top 8 seed, or make a difference in hosting or not.

Lamar has a 78 RPI/55 ISR.   We should not have played Darmouth/Santa Clara if that was your thesis.  It's too late to clutch pearls about the schedule being too hard or easy.

This. It's not like we play some scrub conf schedule.  We have 12 games versus #42, #5, #23, #29 + the SEC tournament.  A single game against #303 is not going to kill our resume.

Wanna do a poll/wager on how far we will drop if we beat them?

-100 points

-11 points

PUSSY OUT AND CANCEL IT.  (you can solve this by making canceled games a forfeit)

If we're at the point that playing PVAM makes any difference to us, then our season has fallen apart. The Horns have a pretty lengthy history of playing PVAM, hopefully because we believe that it's good for them.

I think we should play the games regardless, but I'm pretty sure PVA&M is aware that the game might get canceled if it appears detrimental to UT's post-season seeding.

I am of the belief that UT playing smaller in-state schools is good for the program and the state as a whole.

There was a brief window in the late 2000s where they had a decent program and won the SWAC a few times.

I agree.

The RPI needs retooling.  Go on the road to beat Mizzou, and you get a quad 3 win.  Nevermind they have been run ruled in 4 straight.  3 at home.  One by a barely above .500 team.  Half their SEC games have only lasted 7 innings.  They have 3 quad 1-3 wins - UConn, Illinois and SIEU.

Playing the #101 team at home is not equivalent to beating the last place SWAC team.  Yet it is.  At some point, games should be thrown out.  That way there’s fewer reasons to cancel.

If we’re weighing Tuesday/Wednesday games in the same manner you weigh weekends/conference games, that’s dumb.  Using a metric for post season seeding that gives such an impact to pitchers you likely won’t see in the post season is not indicative of how the post season will play out.

And all that bs leads to games being canceled.

FCB actually had a good baseball piece with some quotes from Tulo

  Hide contents

Much of the attention this week on No. 1 Texas baseball will focus on the Longhorns' weekend series with rival Texas A&M and Jim Schlossnagle facing his former team for the first time since leaving College Station to become the head man in Austin last June.

But let's also look at how, when Schlossnagle left Texas A&M and accepted the Texas baseball head coaching job, he didn't have an opening on his staff for Troy Tulowitzki - and then he did.

Michael Earley, Schlossnagle's hitting coach the previous three seasons at Texas A&M, ended up replacing Schlossnagle as the Aggies' head coach.

So Schlossnagle grabbed his associate head coach Nolan Cain and set up a meeting at Tulowitzki's house.

"I had Nolan Cain meet me out at Troy's house," Schlossnagle said. "And we talked for several hours. And it wasn't necessarily about baseball. Baseball is the thing I was concerned with the least. It was more about, 'Hey, this is what our program will look like; this is what working in our program will look like from a recruiting standpoint, from a time investment, from recruiting weekends and football weekends, and how long those are - from the time the recruits show up on Friday until they leave on Sunday.'

"Troy's got a young family, and a super talented young son who's a great player that he wants to see play. I wanted to meet his wife. You want to make sure it's a good relationship. Like, these are people you see every day - more than your family. So we had those conversations, and I gave him some time to think about it. And then he called back within an hour or so, and said, 'I'm all in, and we rolled from there.'"

After working together now for 10 months, Schlossnagle said what stands out about Tulowitzki is "his passion for the game; his passion for teaching; his passion for truly wanting to be a coach."

"There's very, very few - I mean you can count them on one hand, in my opinion, the guys who have been successful major league players who come back to college baseball - most of those guys want to hit a fungo and go play golf. At least they used to. There's more now that are invested, because, well, number one, you can make good money in college baseball. I think they're attracted to that.

"Kirk Saarlos was a great one. He did a great job for us at TCU, and now he's done an awesome job as the head coach at TCU. And Troy.

"Troy was here really late last night, working both with his son and a few of the guys that wanted some extra help. And he's here as much, or more, than anybody else on our staff. He's been awesome."

Tulowitzki told Horns247 even as a five-time All-Star MLB shortstop wrapping up a 13-year career that included two Golden Glove and two Silver Slugger awards, he had visions of coaching college baseball.

"Even in my playing career, I was kind of coaching," Tulowitzki said. "I loved being in the cage with my teammates and on the field and talking the details of the game and my career. You know, a lot of people could say, well, it was a long, big league career for me. It ended a little short with the injuries. They added up. But I didn't want it to end on a bad note with injuries and go into retirement.

"I wanted to get my joy back, and my biggest joy was playing college baseball [for three seasons with Long Beach State Dirtbags from 2002-04]. So I was like, OK, I want to coach college baseball. I've always been a guy that played better with a chip on my shoulder, and as soon as someone said big leaguers don't make great coaches, that's all I needed to just get that chip on my shoulder and say, 'OK, well, maybe these few don't, but you guys don't know me. I'm different.'

"I love the game at a high level. I've never had any other hobbies. If you ask what is a perfect day for me? It'd be in the cage, with the players, talking the game. It's a true passion of mine. It's what I love doing, and I'm happy that I found that out early."

Tulowitzki has turned down high-profile college head coaching positions, because he wanted to make sure he had a plan for all aspects of the job. He was excited to work with Schlossnagle, who has had consistent success as a head coach for more than two decades.

"I was never one of those big league players that wanted to be the smartest guy in the room," Tulowitzki told Horns247. "I think the way I got good as a player is being around good players, watching how they go about their everyday work. So now I get a front row seat on the same staff of one of the better head coaches to ever do it. And I've learned a ton about how he's built the program, and what he pays attention to, and it's a great experience for me to see it up close and personal."

Tulowitzki became connected to the Texas program in 2020 through his former Colorado Rockies teammate - Texas 2002 national champion pitcher Huston Street.

"I've been part of the program now for a while and seen a lot of good things," Tulowitzki said. "I just love the program. I love the school. My family loves living here. So for me, I didn't want to go anywhere else. The timing was just right for me to stay in the program, to go back to being the hitting coach, and it just all added up. So, I think it was a quick conversation with Schloss, and it's been a blast."

Now, about Tulowitzki's 11-year-old son, Taz, who is showing all kinds of baseball talent ...

"My son's 11, and he's in the facility all the time around the guys, and he benefits from that," said Tulowitzki, who also has a young daughter, Taylee, with wife Danyll. "He'll be one to follow, for sure. I'd love for him one day to be able to put on the burnt orange. That'd be a cool deal. He's special. But I try to remind him all the time there's a lot of good players, and it's all about the little things. So he's a work in progress, but, at the same time, the talent's definitely there."

I’m really interested to see how this staff uses Burns in the bullpen on the weekend now. He started last year at Arizona State and he threw 4 innings and 2.1 innings against Kentucky and Auburn respectively so he can give you length.

This staff actually has quite a few ways they can piece weekends together which will be fun to watch. First time this year where I genuinely feel like I have no idea what they are going to do. Only thing I feel pretty confident that they will do is pair Grubbs with Harrison

don't care, play the game. PVA&M kids have probably circled this game on their calendar as this semester's field trip and are probably stoked about it. more to life than RPI. play the game. time to cancel the game was when the schedule was still written in pencil.

Agree with all this. 1, RPI is stupid. 2, RPI won’t mean a damn thing to us if we’re ranked #1 in the country. We ain’t exactly a bubble team at this point.

Knocked on wood desk just now.

Howdy fellas, Aggie here but I don't want any trouble. I will be in town this weekend for the series and I am unfamiliar with parking near Disch Falk. I know there are several lots near LBJ Library that will be open to the public, but what about East Campus Garage? Will this be open to visitors? If so, if we arrive 2-3 hours before first pitch, are we likely to find a spot? Thank you very much and I am looking forward to what is likely one of the most anticipated regular season series in recent college baseball history.👍

East Campus garage is permit only for games (unless you have a handicap placard). If you park by the LBJ library, it's $10 and they run golf cat shuttles over to the stadium.

we have a new stadium off Mopac and 45 up north, it's fabulous. plenty of parking. doesn't show up on waze or google maps but head that direction you can't miss it.

If I don't have parking access, I actually park in the neighborhood or by the cemetery and if you are that early you'll be fine.

When I took my kids to a game earlier this year, we were staying across I-35.  We took an uber to and from the field with no problem at all.  We did sketch out a little early to beat the rush after the game though so not sure how the uber ride home would be if you stayed until the end.  Now piss off

I'm assuming the list of alternatives for the "next move will be determined after he speaks with his family..." are rest, rehab, or surgery, and the list does not include pitching again this season.

I think it could include pitching again this season. He probably can try and come back and pitch in the playoffs with rest until then, but maybe that's a gamble that him and his family have to talk over. Dont panic yet.

He is done, regardless of what recovery path he chooses there is only 2 months left in the season and that is if this team is playing for a national championship. He won’t even be picking up a baseball for a chunk of time.

Best of luck to him, hope he comes back even stronger.  This team isn't going to quit, and baseball has a long history of teams winning through adversity.  I'm not going to subscribe to any notion, other than things got a little bit more challenging.  I still feel good about these guys. 🤘
