He is done, regardless of what recovery path he chooses there is only 2 months left in the season and that is if this team is playing for a national championship. He won’t even be picking up a baseball for a chunk of time.

Feel terrible for him,  great young man.   Drafted in the 14th rd last year by the Phillies (same rd as Tanner by the Mets),  projected by many in the top 100 this year (65th by ESPN).   His family, Schloss, and Weiner will give advice and referrals on the path forward.

From a cursory search, depending on the extent of the injury shoulder injuries can be more debilitating than TJ.   Let's hope that is not the case.

Does this increase the likelihood he returns for next season or nah?

No.

Sucks to lose him but I’m not too worried with the staff we have and the guy coaching them.

Howdy.  If you get lost in between the parking lot and Disch Faulk, just look for someone in burnt orange to give you directions.

Maybe don’t ask this guy since he doesn’t know the name of the baseball field.

Tough luck for Spencer, really didn't want to hear it.  I was hoping whatever was going on was minor.  Regardless, of what happens next, I'm more than pleased with how this season has turned out.   Now, let's go stunt these sheep molesters.

Good luck to Spencer in whatever the future brings him in baseball, was certainly a great asset as a Longhorn.

If you agree to schedule a team, you should honor that agreement, unless they want out for some reason.

You don't just drop a game because of some RPI numbers, which in this case means basically nothing anyway to Texas at this point.

Baseball...football...we're always down one or two crucial pieces due to injury.

Brooks, Witt, Baxter, Belyeu, Spencer...  It's maddening.

Yeah, we have depth and guys have stepped up; all the credit to those guys.  But still.

Blake Munroe

As the Longhorns gear up to host a red hot Texas A&M team this weekend, I checked with a couple of sources to see where things stand as of Friday morning.

First, let's start with some really good news. I'm told that all signs are pointing to freshman Jonah Williams playing against the Aggies this weekend.

"Good chance he plays, but we will be careful," said a team source.

That's phenomenal, as Williams leads the team in batting average (albeit a small sample size compared to the rest), as he is .462 at the plate in 13 ABs.

---

Yesterday I reported the weekend lineup on the mound would look like this:

Friday - Ruger Riojas
Saturday - Luke Harrison
Sunday - Jason Flores

As of Friday morning, that has NOT changed. Flores is still expected to be the Sunday starter.

Will that be the same going forward? It's too early to tell.

---

Finally, in case you missed it, Jared Spencer is now out for the year. He will undergo surgery on his shoulder next week.

Next man up. Let's take the series against aggy. Look for Schloss to do everything in his power to win Friday and Saturday.

And Sunday.

If we end up using all of our good pitching other than Flores today and tomorrow and end up seeing the guys that we saw on Tuesday pitching 4-5 innings to aggy on Sunday, it will likely be a rough Sunday. But that’s a Sunday problem and will be made infinitely more tolerable if we have won the first two.

Exactly. Schloss wants to win series. He’ll go all out to win a game now and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. Probably even more now that Spencer is out.

Dont forget, if we get blown up in one of the first two games, he will hold back Grubbs or Volantis and we can use them on Sunday. So I think we have enough pitching for 2.5 games this weekend.

Sunday doesn’t matter if we win the first two. We need to be all out for the Friday Saturday games for the rest of the season. No saving arms.

Bobby was taking about injuries today. Why so many injuries and when does it start to negatively affect this team? Kids just not use to this grind, over use or just bad luck? Do we need a new S&C coach?

In fact, under that scenario, we should cancel Sunday but keep the Tuesday game against PV haha

Seriously.  In all sports, there's injuries.

I am going to need to see it happen 2-3 years in a row before I blame S&C and bad luck.  (looking at you, Texas Women's Basketball)

It's already negatively impacting the team. It's just not resulting in losses because the team isn't being bitches about adversity like some of our fans.

It’s also baseball. In sports like football, soccer, even basketball there is much more blame to go around for s&c. It’s not like a bunch of our guys have pulled a hammy. We have a wrist from diving for a ball, a catcher who’s been beat to shit, another guy who’s hand is fucked up likely from just hitting, and a pitcher who’s shoulder is cooked. Other than Spencer those are all random injuries. Spencer’s injury is likely an overuse one but it’s not like we abused him. He’s stepped up to a starter level and just got worn out. It happens

If I’m remembering the injuries correctly, Spencer is the only one which could even be considered a S&C issue. Rodriguez was hit in the hand by a pitch, Belyeu hurt his hand diving in the outfield, and Mendoza hurt his shoulder on an awkward diving play up the middle. Those are just unfortunate accidents.

Wasn’t Spencer hurt at his previous school?

I think every baseball team with players older than 16 years old should just count on losing 2+ key pieces of their pitching staff for an extended amount of time every season.  The current state of the sport, unfortunately, and has very little to do with S&C.

Kind of is just the way baseball is with pitchers now days. Limit pitches initially helped but the switch to just throwing straight gas every pitch in those limited pitches really fucked it up.

The interesting part with Spencer is that it’s not elbow related which is the usual problem modern pitchers have.
I don’t know the injury specifics but shoulder injuries are most often overuse which isn’t surprising considering his step up this year.
