Rodriguez’s injury could be a hamate bone, which would not be good. Supposed to get evaluated further soon.

How / when did he get injured?  HBP maybe since he was DH or baserunning?

Man, that's a salty top 6.

Us sweeping this series and going 4-0 this week gave us no advantage at all. That's pretty crazy. This is looking like a very top heavy league.

We could win the series against Georgia and lose ground.

How could we lose ground?

He got hurt in his only at bat of the series, which was Friday as the DH.

During this at bat, he was jammed by a pitch and the ball hit the bat and his hand, for a foul ball.

There wasn't a lot of reaction from it at the time.

Then he struck out, he returned to the dugout and never came back for that game or the rest of the series.

If we go 2-1 against the top team in the conference and UTenn sweeps the worst team in the conference, I'm not gonna lose any sleep over "losing ground".

Conference titles are cool but all I care about is getting to that 16/17 win mark and hosting.

Tennessee is also likely going to run away with this thing so all the standings watching is going to be moot.

Yep. Reminds me of Ou softball in the Big 12 - Texas playing to host a super and a bye in the conference tourney, because you know they’re gonna win the conference.

Just win enough games to host a super and finish high enough for the double bye

Goddamnit. Do I need to repeat the same thing every year? Yes the Regionals and Supers and all that are the most important when we get there. But is this the Regionals? No this is the regular season and my Texas baseball program isn't in the business of finishing 2nd. We win the SEC we're probably the #1 national seed anyway.

Eh, we don't have to play UTenn, I'll take the schedule we got and take whatever happens.

I just like the complete sea change in competitiveness of this year's team compared to the last few.  It's almost like, oh I don't know, coaching matters?

Winning this conference will be a hell of an accomplishment. Tennessee is the best team in this conference top to bottom but they don’t get to play Mizzou. Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, and LSU all have Mizzou on the schedule.

Arkansas without a doubt has the toughest schedule as they have to play all 4.

Went back and watched that AB and he never got hit with anything. Really odd ordeal

I just posed the question about the injuries in a live OTF chat that just ended.

Bobby said Belyeu was x-rayed, but they haven't heard any results.

He said they didn't have any information yet on Galvan or Rodriguez.

Going to have to wait to tomorrow it seems for any real information.

Only thing I can think of is something that might have happened in batting practice or infield practice before the game.

Something had to happen to him. Rodriguez never showed any pain that I saw.

Yeah. It’s primarily a baseball, tennis and golf injury. The little I’ve researched scares me if it is indeed the Hamate bone.

This is correct.

Wrist ConditionsHook of Hamate Wrist Fracture Symptoms

The hamate bone is one of eight small bones of the wrist. These eight bones are stacked neatly in two rows at the base of the hand (directly under the thicker parts of the palm). Collectively, the bones are called the carpals—a word that comes from the Latin word meaning "wrist." Most people have heard of carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition where a nerve is pinched as it passes through a tight canal partly formed by the carpal bones.

Just like any other bone in the body, the carpal bones can be fractured when they experience abnormal stress or trauma. The hamate bone is an unusually shaped bone. Most of the bone is square-shaped, but there is a projection on the palm side of the bone called the "hook of the hamate." The hook is a small, narrow projection of bone, and is the attachment of ligaments and tendons in the wrist.

Fractures in the Hook of the Hamate

Fractures of the hook of the hamate are unusual. Less than 2% of all carpal bone fractures involve the hook of the hamate.1 However, these fractures are still worth discussing, as they can often be difficult to diagnose and challenging to treat.

Fractures of the hook of the hamate typically occur in athletes who do a sport that involves gripping an object. Typically, the athlete can remember an injury where they had an awkward checked swing of the bat or struck a golf club into a root or the ground.

Baseball players, golfers, and hockey players sustain the vast majority of fractures of the hook of the hamate.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of a fracture of the hook of the hamate is pain. Swelling, bruising, and weakness of grip are also common. The pain may be vague and difficult to reproduce, but should be found when an examiner presses directly on the hook of the hamate bone.1 Often, other causes of ulnar-sided wrist pain may be considered, including TFCC tears, tendon or ligament injuries, or other fractures.

In more longstanding cases, symptoms may also include abnormal nerve function of the ulnar nerve. The ulnar nerve is one of the major nerves supplying sensation to the hand and fingers. The nerve passes just around the hook of the hamate, and often patients will experience numbness and tingling in the small and ring fingers when the ulnar nerve is not functioning normally.

Typical wrist X-rays usually look normal in patients with a fracture of the hook of the hamate. There is a special view, called a carpal tunnel view, that better visualizes the hook of the hamate, making some fractures visible. MRI and CT scans are more sensitive at showing fractures of the hook of the hamate. CT scans show better bone detail, whereas an MRI may be more helpful if the diagnosis is unclear and the examiner wants to also evaluate cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

Treatment Options

There are a few options for the treatment of fractures of the hook of the hamate. Use of a cast to immobilize the broken bone can sometimes be effective, but the results are not reliable. Healing of the fracture may not occur, and patients are likely to need further treatment.

Repair of the fracture is generally avoided. Healing of the bone can still be difficult to accomplish, and patients are often bothered by the hardware used to repair the broken bone.

The most common treatment, especially for an athlete, is to surgically remove the broken hook of the hamate.2 The reliability of recovery from this surgery is very good. Athletes typically take 6-8 weeks to recover from this surgery and return to sports. There are possible complications of surgery, including nerve injury, infection, and pain, but, when performed by an experienced surgeon, it is a very safe procedure.

Can be from a funny swing...doesn't even require hitting the ball

It's also the injury Xavier Worthy had his sophomore year.

Can we please get a better nickname for Galvan, the one we had for Ivan kind of sucked, hated the Hispanic Titanic. The Titanic sunk after all.

How about the Latino Bambino

If it is a hamate bone, he is pretty much out for the rest of the regular season and it is not an easy injury to return from. It can really mess with your swing.

Bagwell broke his hamate on three separate occasions, if memory serves. The first time was in 1992 or 1993 at the end of the season. The second time was a day or two before the 1994 strike, the season in which he won the MVP. Unlikely he wins it without the strike. I can’t remember the third occasion, but he fully recovered each time. It did take awhile.

BRoken hammat bone is very painful and requires season ending surgery. Usually see this with a direct hit by a fastball in on the hand. Hopefull just bruised with the deflection. THis series was a chance to rest guys as well and not play anyone dealing with a minor injury.

Thought maybe it was the Kirk Hammet bone. You shred so hard on the guitar that you break your Kirk Hammet bone.

don't worry, i know the way out

The SEC Baseball standings page still has us at 6-1 for some reason. That probably shouldn't drive me crazy, but it does.

We need to tap the breaks on hamate bone tone break talk ...the poster upthread said speculatively "it could be a hamate..",  absolutely nothing substantiated in the comment.

Good news: They apparently do not think it is a hamate bone. Still being evaluated so not sure the exact injury yet.

Galvan should be fine. No break. It's possible he will be back this weekend.

Belyeu I have no clue on.
