Crazy part is that (hate to say this) USC's current roster is probably already better than what SARK now has at Texas

The QB Dart is better, the WRs are better, TE's better, and I'm guessing the rest of USC's current roster as a whole > current Horns roster...

Texas is a huge fuckin' rebuild...

smdh 😠

The OLine is pathetic, soft and no nastyness. The D is an abomination to football. LB corp with no football IQ (out of position, bad angles), secondary not worth mentioning.

Much like y’all are experiencing, there is a huge culture problem with the team. A good number of players have no business wearing the USC uniform. ClayDoh fostered an environment of softness.

Coach Riley has his work cut out for him next year. His first act needs to be blowing up the dead weight, players and staff.

That is a bit of a question mark about Riley.  What kind of "culture" he instills.  That part of OU was ready-made for him.

That he shitcanned Mike Stoops at the earliest? possible? opportunity perhaps speaks well.  Hard to say.

And despite all those initial obstacles, I have a feeling USC will do far better than 5-7 next year.

You're talking about Texas, right?  Because that's exactly Texas right there.

I (we) can feel your pain when I read the game and other threads here. Our programs are mirror images of each other right now. Hopefully we have righted the ship and the ‘Horns aren’t far behind

Tracking Lincoln Riley's USC football coaching staff: 10.6

ByCHRIS TREVINO 15 hours ago

Quote

Head coach Lincoln Riley's initial USC football staff will be coming together quickly over the next several days. There are three spots locked in at the moment, and just eight of the 10 assistant coaching positions that need to be filled.

Riley could look to the current staff to fill some of the positions, asked in his Monday scrum about retaining certain coaches.

"Yeah, ya know, it's kind of crazy talking to those guys today. I've got so many different connections on this staff, either guys that I've coached against. A lot of guys that I've coached with and know well. So a ton of respect for the guys on there. I've been in that room, that's not an easy position to be in, and they've done a phenomenal job. So gonna evaluate it," he said. "There's obviously gonna have a lot of great candidates I think that want to come coach with us here. There's several really good ones right here. So I'll visit with those guys. The thing I don't want to do is, I don't want to jump too quick. There's a few guys that I know I'm gonna bring, they are here today. There will be a few more coming in the next few days. So, obviously, there's gonna be a lot of candidates out there, whether they're here at USC or not, we'll visit with."

UPDATE (12/9):

Riley's staff is up to seven of the 10 assistant positions having been filled. Riley is still in search of an OL coach, a defensive line coach and a running back coach.

UPDATE (12/18):

HC - Lincoln Riley

OC - Lincoln Riley

QB - Lincoln Riley

WR - Dennis Simmons

OL - Brandon Jones

DC - Alex Grinch

DL/OLB - Jamar Cain

LB - Brian Odom

S - Alex Grinch

CB - Roy Manning

ST - ?

This story will be continuously updated as new names pop up and coaches get locked in. Here is where is stands so far:

RB COACH TASHARD CHOICE

10788434.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,off(Photo: The Athletic )

STATUS: Back to square one

NAMES: N/A

WHERE IT STANDS:

UPDATE (12/19):

It appears the first poached staff member from Lincoln Riley is the new running backs coach Tashard Choice, who is reportedly accepting the same position at Texas. Choice was hired last week and was helping USC recruit on campus for its big visitor weekend. Choice removed all traces of USC from his bio this morning:

USCFootball.com reported on Saturday afternoon that Lincoln Riley has made the move to add Georgia Tech running backs coach and former NFL running back Tashard Choice as his backfield coach. Choice is a Georgia native and Georgia Tech alum, but started his college career at Oklahoma. He famously lost his starting job to freshman phenom Adrian Peterson after Choice suffered an injury. Choice was a fourth-round pick with the Dallas Cowboys and spent six years in the league.

Choice got his coaching start as an intern with the Cowboys in 2016 before becoming a graduate assistant at North Texas. He was moved up to the North Texas running backs coach under former USC OC Graham Harrell. Choice joined the Yellow Jacket program in 2019 as its running back coach and offensive recruiting coordinator. Choice was a nominee for the Broyles Award this season, given to the nation's top assistant. He's also regarded as a good recruiter, signing four four-star running back while at Georgia Tech.

OL COACH BRANDON JONES

8883838.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: Texas Tech Athletics)

STATUS: Reports

AGE: 38

OVERVIEW:

UPDATE (12/17):

USCFootball.com's Keely Eure is reporting that this is not a done deal for USC...

Lincoln Riley has completed his coaching staff with his final hire of Houston offensive line coach Brandon Jones. Jones has direct ties to Riley during stints at Tech Tech and ECU.

UPDATE (12/16):

FootballScoop.com has reported that Riley has targeted Houston offensive line coach Brandon Jones. Jones, a Dallas native, was a standout center for Texas Tech. He has ties to the Big 12 and Pac-12 with stops at Sam Houston State, East Carolina and Cal. He is currently the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator at Houston. He is considered a young-and-comer and has been targeted for other high-profile Power 5 jobs.

UPDATE (12/10:)

Old Billy B will be staying put:

At the moment there are no specific names out there for the job, but intel says there are several qualified candidates that are interested.

UPDATE (12/9):

The Bedenbaugh Train has slowly considerably since the first arrival of Riley. Bedenbaugh took an in-home visit with Oklahoma OT commit Jake Taylor earlier this week:

Bedenbaugh was one of the really early names thrown out by fans and media in the wake of the Riley hire. USCFootball.com reported on the likely hood of Bedenbaugh joining the staff earlier this week, but it's been relatively quiet so far. Bedenbaugh is regarded as one of the top offensive line coaches in the nation in terms of recruiting and development. He also served as a co-OC under Riley. Bedenbaugh would be a massive, massive win for Riley's staff, especially at a USC program that has struggled to bring in blue-chip offensive line prospect that last several years.

UPDATE (12/5):

Clay McGuire is expected to join Jake Dickert's inaugural staff at Washington State as its offensive line coach. McGuire coached six seasons at Washington State under Mike Leach.

We had McGuire's name on the initial list thanks to his extensive connections with Riley; McGuire was a teammate of Riley's at Texas Tech, and they were coaching colleagues at Tech and East Carolina.

DB COACH DONTE WILLIAMS

10765889.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,off(Photo: Shotgun Spratling | USCfootball.com, 247Sports)

STATUS: Not official, but pretty much

AGE: 39

OVERVIEW:

- It looks like at least one of USC's assistant coaches is sticking around in Donte Williams. USCFootball.com's Keely Eure broke the news this afternoon that Williams is expected to be retain by Lincoln Riley. It is unclear what the role will be on the staff, but a recent official visitor noted three defensive back coaches. Williams was USC's associate head coach and cornerbacks coach under former head Clay Helton. The team went 3-7 with Williams at the interim.

Williams will provide another huge recruiting weapon for Riley's staff; the Los Angeles native was USC's best recruiter under Helton, the two-time Pac-12 Recruiter of the Year and a nationally ranked Top 5 recruiter. He was the primary recruiter for several of USC's initial high-profile 2022 commits: five-star CB Domani Jackson, four-star CB Fabian Ross and four-star CB Jaeden Gould. Ross is the only one of those recruits still committed to the class, but Jackson has put USC among his Top 2 with Alabama.

OLB/DL COACH JAMAR CAIN

9386234.JPG?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: Dwayne Ong SunDevilSource, 247Sports)

STATUS: Early reports

AGE: 41

OVERVIEW:

UPDATE (12/13):

- So the retention of Donte Williams gives Riley nine of his 10 on-field coaches spots filled. So that leaves the critical OL coach spot and DL coaches unfilled. But this could also mean that Cain, who has a lot of experience as a defensive line coach, will take on DL and edge rushers. Brian Odom will then take on the full slate of linebackers. This isn't official but it makes sense, assuming Williams will be an on-field coach.

Riley continues to poach his old Oklahoma staff and is expected to add Jamar Cain as a linebacker coach. Cain coached outside linebackers and defensive ends for Riley for one season at Oklahoma, hired in 2020.

Cain has West Coast ties as a NorCal native and coaching experience at Arizona State and Fresno State. As Feldman noted, Cain is considered a top recruiter with seven four star commitments and signees, according to this 247Sports page.

"He's a dynamic recruiter and has a great track record of developing defensive talent at each of his stops," Riley said at the time of Cains hiring at Oklahoma. "He's going to be an excellent addition to our staff."

LB COACH BRIAN ODOM

9362290.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: Joey Helmer, 247Sports)

STATUS: Not official, but pretty much

AGE: 40

OVERVIEW:

Riley is one step closer to filling out his entire defensive staff with the addition of linebackers coach Brian Odom. Odom was Riley's inside linebacker coach at Oklahoma, joining the staff in January of 2019.

Odom has ties to defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, joining his Washington State staff in 2015 as a defensive quality control assistant. Odom, an Oklahoma native, is a former Sooners running back, who was part of the 2000 national championship team. He also has coaching stops at Arizona, Houston and Missouri (OLB coach). This list has updated Jamar Cain to the outside linebackers coach with Odom now on the staff.

As we can see, Odom is already out recruiting as a Trojan:

DB COACH ROY MANNING

9260965.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: Collin Kennedy, 247Sports)

STATUS: Not official, but pretty much

AGE: 40

OVERVIEW:

UPDATE (12/6):

Manning had been the favorite from the beginning and it seems like it has been solidified:

Manning was Riley's cornerbacks coach at Oklahoma. He is a Michigan native that played linebacker at Michigan and a few seasons in the NFL. Manning has plenty of experience on the West Coast and the Pac-12 with stops at Washington State and UCLA (2018). He joined Riley's staff in 2019.

UPDATE (12/5):

It appears Manning has been removed from Oklahoma's coaching directory:

Manning's name was indicated early by sources as a strong candidate to follow Riley, but he was on the roading recruiting for Oklahoma early this week. Things got really interesting when National Recruiting Analyst Greg Biggins posted an update on Tuesday night with former 5-star USC commit and cornerback Domani Jackson, who stated the he was talking to Grinch and Manning. It started a commotion on social media:

TE COACH ZACH HANSON

8438034.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: GoPowercat.com, 247Sports)

STATUS: Early reports

AGE: 33

OVERVIEW: It looks like Riley has another offensive staff win in the form of Tulsa offensive line coach Zach Hanson. While he was the OL coach at Tulsa, Hanson is reportedly set to be the tight ends coach at USC. We will keep him in that slot for now.

Hanson, a California native, signed with Kansas State out of Nevada. He played 37 games at offensive tackle for Kansas State and earned first-team All-Big 12 in 2011. Hanson spent time as the tight ends coach and assistant offensive line coach to legendary Kansas State coach Bill Snyder in 2018. He also has coaching experience with wide receivers and special teams (UNC).

He also has strong ties to Riley; Hanson served as offensive analyst on Oklahoma's staff in 2019, and his wife Annie served an assistant athletic director and Riley's director for recruiting strategy. She is expected to join the USC staff as well.

WR COACH DAVE NICHOL

8546435.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320  (Photo: Cougfan.com/Whittney Thornton)

STATUS: Not official, but pretty much

AGE: 45

OVERVIEW: Riley has added another full-time assistant to his offensive staff in Mississippi State receivers coach Dave Nichol, first reported by our fellow 247Sports site Bulldawgs247. It is not confirmed where Nichol will coach, but he will presumably coach inside receivers; Riley had two receivers coaches at Oklahoma.

Nichol as solid connection with Riley; the two coaches were student assistant coaches together at Texas Tech in 2003-05, and spent two seasons as full-time assistants (2012-13) at East Carolina. Nichol followed MSU head coach Mike Leach to the SEC in 2020 to coach inside receivers. He also has experience with the offensive line, outside receivers and quarterbacks. He also has a stint as the East Carolina offensive coordinator (2015).

DC ALEX GRINCH

STATUS: Not official, but pretty much

AGE: 41

OVERVIEW:

The Ohio native Grinch But Riley specifically announced that Grinch would be the team's defensive coordinator at his introductory press conference. He noted that Grinch was one of the first coaches he asked to come join him at USC; Grinch flew into Los Angeles with Riley from Oklahoma on Monday morning. Grinch attended USC's Tuesday practice and took notes. He's also been on the road hitting up high schools for USC. It's not "official official" as USC has not announced him yet.

Grinch was a rising coaching star out of Washington State, but his time at Oklahoma came with mixed results. He runs a hybrid 3-4 scheme that utilizes speed,  multiple looks and aggressiveness. Sound familiar?

WR COACH DENNIS SIMMONS

10759873.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: Shotgun Spratling | USCfootball.com, 247Sports)

STATUS: Not official, but pretty much

AGE: 48

OVERVIEW:

Simmons is similar to Grinch in that he was one of the first coaches Riley asked to join him; he was also on the flight Monday out of Oklahoma and attended Tuesday practice. The former BYU linebacker has also been out on the road recruiting for the Trojans. Simmons, Riley's assistant head coach, is regarded as an elite recruiter; per his 247Sports recruiting page he has signed or landed commitments from 16 four-star prospect and three five-star prospects. He is the lead recruiter for local five-star running back and USC target Raleek Brown. Simmons has primarily coached outside receivers so he could be one of two receiver coaches on this staff; Oklahoma had an outside receiver and inside receiver coach under Riley.

DIRECTOR OF SPORTS PERFORMANCE BENNIE WYLIE

0OMMENTS

AGE: 41

OVERVIEW:

Wylie was one of the four former Oklahoma staffers that Riley dropped in his opening press conference statement. Wylie has stops with the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee, Texas Tech and Oklahoma's rival Texas. He was also in attendance at USC's Tuesday practice. Wylie coached with Riley at Texas Tech and even was a S&C coach for current USC offensive coordinator and for Red Raider star QB Graham Harrell. Wylie graduated from Sam Houston State University, where he lettered in football from 1994-97. He is a known coach in the industry after winning season one of NBC's STRONG, a reality show that partners 10 contestants with 10 elite personal trainers.

Grinch has been a DB coach most of his career. The staff also has Roy Manning, who was coaching CB at OU. Donte Williams may be the best DB coach of the bunch and is best recruiter. Williams was the contact for Domani Jackson (5-star recruit) who just committed to the Trojans. The proper business decision would be to keep Williams, but Grinch and Manning followed Riley to USC. Williams was the one USC coach I was hoping OU would have gone after.

Have you SEEN the abomination that is the USC secondary? Players out of position, poor technique and zero tackling ability. Those are William’s players. He may be a “recruiter”, but has honestly shown little as a position coach.
This nonsense about keeping or promoting a coach for no other reason than his recruiting ability is rubbish. Make them a “recruiting specialist” or something, but judge their coaching separately. From USC’s perspective, this is the same thing that happened with Tee Martin. He could recruit, but as a receiver coach (yeah he was a quarterback) he was sub-par. So what did they do? They made him the Offensive Coordinator to keep him happy, which turned out as well as you would think.

Riley needs to clean house completely to right the ship. If players are butthurt about it, have a nice life. Not like they were setting the world on fire.

Tear it down to the studs.  And take plenty of time to rebuild.  No hurry (terrified that Riley is going to recruit a la Cheatey Petey)

This year I only watched USC after Riley left for LA, and only 10 min highlights of their games at that. I agree with you about "recruiters only" being a good model for position coach hires. I had info that Williams was a good coach (from the "2 High" PFF podcast). So thank you for the info. Shoehorning him onto the USC staff makes even less sense now.

Just so you know, Riley's nepotistic defensive hiring may be his undoing. Of the defensive coaches you got, Cain is the only one who'll be missed in Norman. He recruited well, and his edge/DE players seem to love him. Odom is a good story, but he was a subpar at OU. His LBs were reasonably good vs the run, but they were generally terrible in zone coverage. He was the worst recruiter on the staff at OU. Manning's CB got WORSE under his tutelage, but he brings energy and is a good recruiter. Grinch recruits the safety position well, but his safeties were the worst position group overall on the defense. His frustrating insistence on playing tiny nickel backs was a boon to offensive efficiency throughout the conference.

If I were a Trojan supporter, I'd be concerned that Riley brought most of his defensive staff to Norman. BTW, the biggest weakness, pun intended, of the new Trojan staff may be its S&C coach, Bennie Wiley. While flexibility and quickness may have improved for some players, overall the OL regressed annually under his helm, and the need for frequent substitutions on defense probably cost OU games.

Riley was frustrated with the compliance department at OU. If he had any reservations about being coach at OU as the Sooners transition to the SECSECSEC, I think it would be that he wouldn't be able to pay players on the scale that the programs in that conference are doing. Odom and other coaches who were mediocre to poor recruiters at OU will likely see a change in fortune at USC. I anticipate the Trojans will have a top flight bag game and a lot of high profile NIL. But as is the case with A&M, it takes time for that to pay off in wins, and Riley doesn't have an elite defensive staff to compliment his offense like Jimbo had with Elko.

I'm very interested to see the trajectory of Riley's Trojans. His nepotistic hires on defensive and S&C will set a ceiling for the program. His offense's running game is challenging to institute, and it was faltering at OU over the last couple of years. He's definitely bright, and his recruiting pitch will be hard to top (LA, $). I imagine he'll have them rolling by year 3 - 4.

Don't know anything about the secondary coach, but Orlan_o's schemes, blitzes and coaching do the secondary no favors. I.E., he absolutley has a negative impact on secondary play.

I don't follow USC but I've known they've picked up a lot of dudes and lost a lot of dudes but has LR picked up any solid OL or DL?  I know that's been their issue in the past and I remember hearing an interview with someone who covers the Pac-12 talk about how the roster was complete shit, especially with the non skill positions.

Maybe he’ll be able to replicate his 35 yard per game average out there.

OU will definite miss him, but, he's still mostly potential (a lot of potential). The reason I'm (a little) surprised that he's going to SC is that he averaged less than 4 targets a game at OU, and now he's going to be going to the same OC - QB combo that orchestrated that.

If Caleb Williams ends up NOT going to SC (unlikely), I wonder if he gets tired of the show and ends up at Miami (hometown, Cristobal, bags, good QB).

Also, Mario Williams being downgraded after his freshman year performance show that 247 doesn't know how to rank transfers right now. Freshmen WR are usually quite useless (making Worthy even more special), and Mario Williams certainly lived up to his top 50 ranking in his first year.
