I mean... sure.  It's the creative process.  Nothing is anything until the person who creates it decides that's it's going to happen.

There are numerous examples of story lines/characters/etc., changing while projects are in development.   Just to use a recent example, Jesse Pinkman was originally going to die in the first season of Breaking Bad, but Vince Gilligan changed his mind mid-way through because he liked what Aaron Paul was doing so much and didn't want lose it.

Did you read your own link?  He's speaking about the plan as it was laid out before they even filmed the first movie. Yeah, things changed.  When Empire was filmed, they were siblings.

Kurtz gave TPM a mixed review as he was clouded by plans made for Episode 1 back in the early 70s. As someone involved with Star Wars from the initial concepts, Kurtz revealed the original intentions for the nine films as they were laid out BEFORE 1980

Yes, the original plan was that Luke's sister was on the other side of the galaxy. Not the same princess that he rescues in the first movie. The script for Empire was written in 1978. Empire came out on May 21, 1980. They were not siblings. If you want further proof, go look at the first draft of Empire, written by Leigh Brackett. She had a love scene for Luke and Leia written in to that script. The only change was Vader being Luke's dad.

He changed it for Jedi because he ditched the idea to have another trilogy. So the prospect of meeting Luke's twin sister went from the sequel trilogy to Jedi because he wanted to wrap up the series.

Spoiler

i call bullshit on the plan for the 9 films being laid out in the 70's.  at least in the current iteration of them.  not a chance in hell he was worried about trade federations and pod races and space casinos and slave horses and snoke and lando's daughter and rey being palpatines relative.  bullshit.  bullshit bullshit bullshit.

If you ever want to see just how close Star Wars came to being a disaster, grab the graphic novel called The Star Wars. It is the original rough outline of the screenplay for Star Wars and it is a disaster.

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/The_Star_Wars

It's interesting people think Lucas had this grand plan. He really didn't. He had a backstory in his head but he has a pretty clear history of shoehorning thing in to fit whatever narrative he wanted to go with later. I mean Jabba was a fat Scotsman that was cut from ANH. Vader wasn't Anakin in ANH. He was truly a student who went bad and killed Anakin. The original script for Empire had Anakin's ghost appear to Luke who told him about his twin sister who was on the other side of the galaxy so the Emperor couldn't find her. After Lucas changed Vader to Luke's dad, he then went with the Vader was really Anakin angle.

holy shit. i thought i was a superfan of star wars, but this shit is entirely new to me:

Quote

The Jedi Kane Starkiller and his two sons, Deak and Annikin Starkiller, live on the Fourth Moon of Utapau. Their seclusion from the forces of the Galactic Empire is interrupted by the arrival of a Sith flying a Banta Four starfighter. The Jedi and his sons go to investigate, but the Sith gets a jump on them, killing Deak with a single blow. Their foe is no match, however, for a Jedi Master, and Kane avenges his apprentice. It is clear that the exiles must flee the Kessil system and they leave for their homeworld of Aquilae. Aquilae, a planet not yet controlled by the Empire, is ruled by the wise King Kayos and Queen Breha. Unfortunately, even as the Jedi arrive in system, the Galactic Emperor, Cos Dashit, plots with his advisors to annex it, one of the last of the Independent Systems. Spies on Alderaan, the gas giant capital of the Empire, leave to bring news of this to Aquilae's leadership.

Meanwhile, Kane and his sons arrive at Aquilae and contact the royal government at their Underground Fortress. Kane reunites with a fellow Jedi, Luke Skywalker, now a General in the Aquilaean military. Kane reveals to his friend the extent of his cybernetic replacements—only his head and arm remain flesh. Because of this, he believes that he cannot adequately train his remaining son, and asks Skywalker to train him as a padawaan learner. Not long after princess Leia, Kayos's daughter, leaves for Yuell to study at the Chatos Academy, a huge space fortress enters the Aquilaean system. The king leaves for Amsel to meet with his Senate and determine whether to go to war with the Empire. Kane goes to Gordon, a seedy starport, to meet with his friend Han Solo, a Ureallian. When the wounded Clieg Whitsun, one of the spies from Alderaan, arrives to warn the Aquilaeans of the Empire's plans of conquest, a decision is quickly made to resist. Annikin is sent to the Academy to secure the princess. The fortress is assaulted and damaged, and two droids aboard, C-3PO and R2-D2, prematurely evacuate, landing their lifepod in the Jundland Wastes.

It transpires that the real reason for the invasion is the Aquilaean facility with genetics and biology, including cloning. Hoedaack tells Darth Vader that it is crucial to capture one of the royal family in order to control the planet, since its people have been ruled by them for 10,000 years. Without a puppet ruler, he explains, the Empire would get no cooperation stealing the biotic secrets of Aquilae. Simultaneously, King Kayos is killed by an Imperial ambush, and the Senate of Aquilae sues for peace. The two droids encounter Annikin and Leia returning from the Academy in the desert. They regroup at a hidden entrance to the royal fortress, and the Queen decides to send for help from the Ophuchi system. Luke, Annikin, and the royal children, including Leia's younger brothers Biggs and Windy, disguise themselves and leave for Gordon. At Gordon, the heroes are embroiled in a fracas in a cantina. Outside the cantina, they encounter Han Solo, and in the slums, Kane. It is decided to that to leave Aquilae they will have to escape on a Baltarian freighter, but a power source is needed for the microcases that will hold the young princes in hibernation to avoid detection. Kane sacrifices one from his own mechanical chest, giving up his life.

The freighter, however, is a trap. The captain is none other than Valorum, one of the Sith Knights. The heroes are subdued and taken prisoner, and they are thrown into a cell. This proves as only a minor setback, as they succeed in overpowering their guards, leaving the ship and taking an Imperial starship. They take off, but are pursued by Imperial craft. The ship eludes the enemy by entering an asteroid field, and passing through into one of the Forbidden Systems. Unfortunately, their ship is critically damaged. Everyone climbs into life pods and they eject the wreck. The pods fall into the jungle planet of Yavin, home of the Wookees. Artwo and Annikin set out from their pod, looking for the others. They find a group of Yourellian trappers trying to capture Wookees. The trappers are routed, and one of the Wookees, Chewbacca, carries Annikin, who has been wounded in the fight, to his tribe's settlement. Artwo follows. As this is going on, everyone but Leia has gathered at the home of two anthropologists named Owen and Beru Lars. Meanwhile, after fighting Jommillia, Annikin is accepted by the tribe. Han and Skywalker take jetsticks and locate Annikin, Artwo and the Wookees. Because Han is able to speak the Wookee language, the heroes learn that Leia is imprisoned at the Mavassi outpost, an Imperial camp. Han, Skywalker, Annikin and the Wookees attack the Imperial base, but find that Leia has already been sent to Aquilae. A group of Imperial troops find Biggs and Windy, but are defeated.

Annikin and Artwo fly an Imperial ship to the fortress, and Artwo accesses the computer. They find the location of the princess's cell. Annikin disables a stormtrooper and takes his armor. He is trapped by Imperial troops, and gassed into unconsciousness, and Vader ordered Valorum to execute him. Simultaneously, Skywalker commands a group of fighters piloted by Wookees, and the nine vessels head toward the fortress. Valorum has a last-minute change of heart. He cannot kill his prisoner, and releases him. Together they find the princess and let her out of her cell. The power fails as a barrage of hits from the Wookees damages the space station. The heroes, including Valorum, boarded life pods and escape as it explodes. The new Queen of Aquilae, Leia, rewards the heroes in the Palace of Lite. The droids are upgraded to class A-4, and Annikin is appointed Lord Protector of Aquilae.

what a mess that is.

I think JJ should just go gritty realism.  Even though she knew she was his sister Leia still secretly had a thing for Luke's force dong but she kept it buried for the greater good.  Han was out on the road a year long smuggling mission leaving her at home with toddler Ben.

Like a lot of left at home MILFs Leia had a few too many Mambo Taxis before the Rebel Alliance's fifth annual Christmas party.  Luke had been enjoying him some bourbon spiked green titty milk nog and one thing led to another.   Leia and Luke dumped the kid as soon as they could but Ben somehow found out his mom was a Mambo Taxi guzzling incestous slut whore and Rey was the product of his uncle giving his mom the pickle tickle.  Secretly though he always blamed his dad for always being on the road and his uncle for fucking his mom.  Went full emo Kylo Ren and here we are....

I'd rather watch the prequels every day for a year than watch TLJ again.  I hope I don't feel that way about this one coming up, but I am not optimistic after Rose and that horse scene.

I started RotS about a month ago and couldn’t do it.  HC is such a beating.  I made it through the opening scene on Grevious ship and his dialogue and delivery were making me want to sew my ears shut.  I couldn’t make it past the reunion pregnancy discussion  with Padme.

Somehow for me its has gotten worse with age.

Is phantom menace somehow the best of those 3?  Annie is annoying as fuck, but he has to split time to obi wan and qui gon who both do a pretty good job.

It's got the pod-racing scene.  Also, Jar Jar has a helluva character arc, from bumbling lunatic to respected military strategist.

Oh, and there's this Darth Maul guy, and a fight or two with him.

I can watch Phantom Menace again (it's the only one of the prequels I let my 1st grader watch).  I don't care to sit through TFA/TLJ or the other prequels.  And it's not HC that ruins those, it's a lot of other shit.

But we have the Clone Wars animated series, and then Rebels. So there is no need to watch any of the prequels or sequels.

I just have to decide whether to take my 7 year-old or not - he's never seen a SW movie in the theaters, and he's only seen the OT and the Phantom Menace.  I kind of want to give him that experience.

There's plenty of opportunity for theatres to host showings of the older ones going forward. If not, throw that shit on a nice TV in bluray or rip it in BR quality off the internet. You can also try to mimic the originals by DLing something like Harmy's despecialized edition  if you want to give your kid the "real" experience.

As for episode 9, I just watched the trailer. It looks like a fucking abomination. I guess some of you already touched on it, but it might be worse than TLJ. The canon (and it hurts to call it that) is so disjointed at this point that I really have no faith in them saving whatever the fuck they have barfed out at this point. TFA was a good movie and deserved a decent follow up. They didn't deliver on that, and not only did they not deliver, they basically ruined any remaining captivating storylines that would have held a third movie together.

Fucking whatever. We'll always have the OT, whatever parts of the prequels that any of you like, and TFA.

Rogue One is dope too.

ROTS is the best to me. Maybe it helps to watch it in context of the OT - I like going IV, V, III, VI if I'm in a real nostalgic SW fix.

There are parts in the second half (of ROTS) that are good and pretty redeeming in the SW cinema universe. Windu apprehending Palpatine, Palpatine vs. Yoda, Anakin going full Vader, Anakin vs. Obi Wan. In my estimation it helps to just sit back and try and enjoy it for what it is: flawed but attempting to tell a larger story.

Then again, I totally get why anyone wouldn't be a fan. I guess I just ignore enough of the shitty writing and acting to get at least some satisfaction from what's going on on screen.

I've been saying for a while that there's a good movie buried in TPM.  With some better editing and a better actor playing Anakin, that's a good movie.

AOTC is the irredeemable mess of the prequel trilogy.  It's just a garbage movie all the way around.

ROTS has some good stuff in it, but it had to tell waaaay too much story in ~2 hours because of how shitty AOTC was.

Basically, an extended first act of ROTS is what AOTC should have been - a rousing adventure film with Obi-Wan and Anakin kicking ass and being BFFs.

Then he would have had a whole movie to explore Anakin's fall that was rushed in the second half of ROTS.

In an alternate universe, Liam Neeson played Obi Wan, McGregor played Anakin, and TPM was your introduction to those characters friendship.  The way those 2 interacted in TPM is the way the relationship should have gone in AOTC, and we get Neeson's good acting in AOTC and ROTS.

The story may have been crazy and seemed like a mess, and a lot people blame that on Lucas, but I think the original trilogy was just as crazy.  There may have been some bad lines, but I think the story was there for the prequels.  I think a combination of good acting and directing is what made it work for the OT.  I don't know if it was the directing or the acting, but the story just wasn't presented well for the prequels.  As good as Portman and McGregor are (and how poorly Portman showed in these films), I lean towards the directing with a splash of bad acting from the guy that played Anakin.

I love that any thread on the current Star Wars movie will inevitably devolve into a discussion of what went wrong with the prequels, usually with a sidebar on what made the original trilogy great for adults versus just thinking it was fucking cool as a six year old. And usually we'll get at least one person saying "yeah but there's a cartoon that <explains something inexplicable/shows a useless character doing something cool and important>" which is the peak.

It illustrates the pointlessness and creative bankruptcy of the franchise.

Evangelical zeal for Star Wars at this point is like defending the 2019 Texas defense because you watched UT football with your Dad in the 80s and we won the national championship in 2005. The 2019 team sucks. It wears burnt orange and plays in Memorial Stadium, but if you watch these games and say "hey this is actually pretty good, we beat Kansas in a thriller!" or "we almost beat OU and LSU!", you can't or won't see the difference between good and bad football.

On the former point, I'm not sure... I just thought McGregor's Obi-Wan was perfect, and I liked Qui-Gon coming in as a new character.  I also think that Lucas' original idea of having Qui-Gon/Obi-wan to show how the Master/Padewan relationship was *supposed* to work was a good one.

In my ideal world, the prequels would have gone something like:

Ep 1 - Could be basically the same story/structure, except when they find Anakin on Tatooine, he's a teenager, and it's *Obi-wan* who insists on taking him with them, against Qui-Gon's wishes. Then the same deal when they take Anakin to the Jedi counsel -- they say they won't train him - but make Qui-Gon side with them and again have Obi-Wan being the one who insists that he be trained.  Same ending with Qui-Gon getting killed while Obi-Wan watches, but instead have Darth Maul escape.  Same ending with the counsel reluctantly agreeing to let Obi-Wan train Anakin, with the idea that the two of them would eventually lead a hunt for Darth Maul to figure out how/why the Sith returned.

Ep 2 - Jump forward 4-5 years and the first act of the film is Obi-Wan/Anakin completing their hunt for Maul. We get to essentially see Obi-Wan and Anakin being BFFs and kicking all kinds of ass as they go for their final confrontation with Maul. Padme would be involved in the hunt as well so you begin planting the seeds of their relationship, as well as setting up Anakin/Obi-Wan/Padme as the trio who we care about through the prequels.  This is also where you work in Palp meeting with Separatists, etc.  In their final confrontation Maul wounds/disables Obi-Wan and Padme and is about to kill them and then Anakin goes all dark side ape-shit destroyer mode and kills Maul. (You could also make this how they discover Clone stuff instead of the stupid Obi-Wan detective story in AOTC)   That's when Palp realizes how powerful Anakin is and begins his seduction of him throughout the final two acts... at the same time, Anakin and Padme have a growing relationship because of the shit they've been through.  The third act could also be a big confrontation that is the first big battle of the Clone Wars.  Anakin again saves the day in the end, showing that he's a badass and a true hero, making his eventual fall all that much worse.

Ep 3 - Basically keep the second half of ROTS, but extended it out so that everything isn't so rushed, and also I would make Anakin's turn more a function of Palpatine more directly deceiving him into turning. Also the Padme dying of broken heart is dumb AF. Just have her - clearly depressed - taking Leia to Aldderan and Obi-Wan taking Luke to Tatooine.

Boom. Done.  $9.95 please.

I wonder whether it was really their decision to step away.  Disney and its studio executives need the next trilogy to appeal to a broader audience than just sycophants, morons and SJWs and I imagine that Disney had concerns regarding the Daves' ability to develop a compelling original story based on the abortion that was GoT once the Martin source material dried up.
