because he had Obi-Wan Kenobi helping him? like working with him on the Millennium Falcon and then whispering Force Ghost love notes in his ear during the fight?

because the shot that blowed up the Death Star was supposed to be a Hail Mary?

I didn’t read that press release, but does it really say that the guy who ruined Star Wars is going to be leading Star Wars into the future after IX? This may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of true.

he just needs his own space to show how much of a creative genius he is over the course of a trilogy /rimbo

There's plenty to complain about in these films, but I honestly don't understand this one.

Rey hardly became "a Jedi master over the course of an afternoon."  Rey was already shown to be a badass who can handle herself... then all of a sudden she's able to tap into the Force... so of course that's going to make her an even more formidable opponent.

How is it any different than Luke learning about the Force for the first time and then just a few days later tapping into it to shoot a proton torpedo into 2-meter wide exhaust port without a targeting computer?  (Yeah I know he used to bulls-eye womprats with his T-16 back home)....

But still... it's the same concept and a pretty well-worn fantasy/hero journey trope... (1) Learn about special powers (2) Weld special powers to help the good guys win right away.

To further the example, the first time we see someone "force grab" something was 10 minutes into ESB, when Luke still had about 15 minutes total of training with Obi-Wan... he wields the Force with an ability we'd never seen or heard about before to save himself from the Wampa.

So again - it's a common fantasy/hero journey trope.

Absofukinglutely this.

The dumbest complaint I've seen on twitter and youtube comments is how she's a Mary Sue(Yeah she sorta is) and how she learned the force in one afternoon in the first movie, and over a weekend in the 2nd movie.  They convienantly forget that Luke has about the SAME amount of training, maybe less, and fought Vader in ESB.

Yes there are tons of complaints about the new series...but Rey becoming a powerful force user is not one of them.

Years (two-ish?) passed between Star Wars and ESB.

A better example would be if Luke had picked up his lightsaber for the first time in Obi-Wan's hut, walked outside, and kicked the shit out of Darth Vader.

Yes, but he didn't have 2 years of training between.  Who trained him?

HE didn't ruin Star Wars for everyone.  Just for some of you.  There are TONS of us that actually liked TLJ.  But most of us aren't as bullish about it as you guys, because, as usual, people that are upset are more likely to rant than people who enjoy something.

Also not true except for some people.  You guys do realize that people do actually like current Star Wars and current GOT right?  People are allowed to like things you don't, just like you can say that they are ruining it.

Did I hurt the fanbois feelings?

TLJ was rightfully trashed and it's widely accepted that GOT has fallen way off since they haven't had the books to work off of, but sure let's hand the future of the Star Wars franchise to those guys.

They'll always have fanbois like Drew to rely on though.

I've never watched a second of GOT, so I have no idea if it's been ruined or not.  All I know is that TLJ was not only the worst Star Wars movies by far, it was also one of the worst movies I've ever seen.  If my son hadn't been with me, I would have walked out. That's how bad it was.  If the future of the franchise is in the hands of the person who created that abortion, I will figuratively walk out of the franchise going forward.  That movie was utter and complete shit in every conceivable way.

I mean when Luke Fucking Skywalker is telling you that you are fucking up the most important character of the OT, maybe you should listen?

Seriously, wtf is this shit?

Quote

They had me walking by 3PO, not even acknowledging him. I said: “I can’t do that! He (The Last Jedi’s director, Rian Johnson) said, “Okay, go over and do whatever.” So I went over, and I did whatever. They say it in the script: “Forget the past, kill it if you have to”, and they’re doing a pretty good job!’

Actually the proper parallel would be if it was established that Luke was already a good pilot (we didn't see it, but it was mentioned several times in SW that he was a good pilot) and then all of a sudden he tapped into the Force and it took his (already established) ability to the next level... which is exactly what happened at the Battle of Yavin.

And so it also went with Rey.  It was already established that she was a great fighter who could handle herself... then she taps into the Force and it takes her established ability to the next level at Starkiller Base.

Again - I don't understand why people get so bothered by this.

The bigger complaint (IMO) is why the hell didn't they map out Rey's full story ahead of time instead of just winging it movie by movie.

Rian Johnson is a good director.  Full stop. Brick and Looper say so.

He can be a good writer.  In my *opinion* he tried too hard in TLJ to *not* create a fan service showcase and the movie was the worse for it.  JJ is going to swing the pendulum too far in the other direction I’m afraid for IX

As someone who just saw VIII as a movie and not a star wars fan, I thought it was fine. The prank call fell flat and some of the casino stuff was too heavy handed but fine overall and a beautiful movie.

I don't like Luke and Leia in the OT and never saw VII. I-III are literally unwatchable. Rogue one is the only star wars movie that is above average. This teaser looks fun though. Jmho

Luke was a dipshit who could pilot but got his ass kicked and had a hard time shooting a tie fighter.

He had a thoroughbred bloodline and was taught by a grandmaster and master jedi and coached even after they died. He went against the emperor and got the shit kicked out of him yet again.

Name a single fight Rey really lost? Training droid even? Oh and she is a master pilot, master mechanic, and is a master at lightsaber combat as well. She hasn’t even made a lightsaber of her own. She is using Aniken’s. She is Mary Sue.

^this. Kylo got shot in the torso by Chewie’s damn crossbow and probably had exposed bloody and broken ribs. TLJ happens immediately after so he is still probably not 100%. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a badass in Ep. 9.

Not defending TLJ for a second though. That movie was for a Skywalker fan what it must feel like to pay for a tomahawk ribeye at a nice steakhouse but then they serve you a plate someone’s loose stools after eating Panda Express and Golden Corral.

First encounter with Kylo he pretty easily deflected her panicked shots and froze her solid with the Force.

Isn't that when she started downloading his skillset?   Vader tortured his daughter, and chopped his son's hand off and kicked the shit out of him.   She was stopped using his force paralyze/freeze power.   Her loss was slight setback and worked out in her favor.

Yup.  Tastes vary and whatnot.  But a lot more people disagree with spanky, than agree, so he can take that bulljive it to the unpopular opinions thread.

I mean, she's not drop dead gorgeous, but I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crackers. And she isn't going to be nearly as run down looking by her third movie as Carrie Fisher was.

Peak Carrie Fisher (that very very brief peak) is the best of the best.

Then it sort of depends how in to tits you are.  Natalie Portman and Daisy Ridley are both more attractive overall than Felicity Jones (and definitely in that order) but if you like big tits at the expense of everything else Felicity is your lady.  I don't count the chick from Solo since she isn't really a heroine.

You forgot about Hope Solo, who was partially in ROTJ

Compare her on Endor in ROTJ to her in A New Hope. She aged a lot. Still would have, and apparently she likely would have as well, but she was definitely on the down hill slope.

From 19 to 25 you think that is run down?  Please post pics of your significant other to show us fools how its done.

Honest question, since I don't care if people like things I don't and if you're a fan of the new trilogy that's fine, but were those really your only quibbles with the movie?

All of the humor fell flat for me.  The "Your Mama" joke being the worst offender.  And of course, it neutered any menace Hux had right out of the gate.  He was clearly a brown-nosing, over-the-top weasel in the first film, but he's still supposed to be somewhat intimidating.  After that odd as fuck scene he's just a complete joke.  You can't take him even slightly seriously anytime he's on screen after that.

You didn't have any issue with the slowest and most retarded chase scene in movie history?  I can suspend my disbelief with the best of them, but that had me shaking my head in confusion and frustration.  All the ships (except Tie fighters) go the exact same speed?  The Resistance ships can't use their hyperdrives, but surely the First Order can, right?  So nobody is going to suggest jumping ahead of them and setting up a kill box?  And you have a ginormous fleet chasing these folks with probably hundreds of TIE fighters in them.  But instead of just swarming them you send Kylo out with a small escort?  And then you call him on the radio and tell him to get back since you "can't cover him" from that distance.  As if the bad guys in Star Wars have ever given a single solitary fuck about the lives of the common grunt in their armies.  That's literally the job of TIE fighters and Stormtroopers.  To get wasted at every opportunity.

Then we're trapped in a literal idiot plot.  The purple haired "Boys are stupid!" lady doesn't bother telling her plan to anyone, which incites a mutiny, and there was absolutely no reason to withhold the plan.  And in the end, the plan gets damn near everyone killed anyway.  Whoops!

And our ending was a small handful of Resistance members (enough to all fit on the Falcon) surviving, with no one coming to help them, having just watched all their friends get annihilated, and they're all fucking smiles.  The tone of this movie was just all over the fucking place.

I'm leaving out a horde of minor stuff too, like Phasma being worthless again, "Chrome Dome!", BB-8 driving a goddamn AT-ST, them needing to find one specific dude to do the hack but getting arrested and then just happening to get locked up with another guy who can do the hack, bad fight choreography, Snoke being a joke, drinking green alien titty milk, etc.

Yeah I don't care about any of that. It's a dumb space action movie that I watched while high and bored on a Saturday night. The action scenes are pretty decent and Rian Johnson just has a gift with making visually beautiful movies. I didn't expect Shakespeare, but I do sympathize with those that did and are disappointed.

Fair enough.

I don't know anyone that expects Shakespeare from Star Wars, though.  I certainly don't.  I just expect some level of competency beyond absolutely fucking retarded.  The movie was actively insulting in how lazily/poorly it was written.

And honestly?  I can forgive a lot.  A lot.  But then they have to go and take a dump on one of the most iconic characters in movie history.  That's just mean, man.

Had this happened before the prank call, I would have lol'd due to knowing now, this movie was gonna suck really, really, fucking bad.  As it was, by the time it happened, I was fully prepared for the Neverending Story tribute and it didn't hit me near as hard.
