Blackjack - the martingale system

Anybody tried it? If you lose a hand, you keep doubling the bet and you are eventually back to even because "you won't lose them all." Skim the profit when you win a hand, and only use profits for splits and doubles. What could go wrong?

I do the opposite. Go on a win run and keep the wins out till 4 or 8x your original bet depending on how big your balls are.

Supposedly a buddies friend does it betting on red/black in roulette. Problem is going on a bad run and hitting the table limit.

Correct. It’s not a system as much as it is a mathematical guarantee. But yes for the guarantee you need no table limits and unlimited funds. You’re better off doing it at a video roulette machine. Best of luck to you if you guess the wrong color 6 or 7 times in a row and don’t forget about the greens!

I once saw a drunken trust fund douche lose about $800 a pop on red/black by going red every time and losing for about 8 times in a row.  I wish he would have been doing this method it would have been glorious.

1. Blackjack doesn't pay 1:1. You're more likely to go on a losing streak than a winning streak.

2. "Doubling the bet" every time you lose can get out of hand quickly.

Also the "problem" is red/black in roulette are juiced odds.

This would be an interesting method if you could actually place a 1:1 bet with an exact 50% chance of winning. But, you know, Casinos are into taking your money.

It's a betting strategy. If you win a hand you get paid the same amount. If you lose a hand and you bet double the next time and you win. You are out the original bet. But you recoup that and a winning bet.

$10 - loss

$20 - win $40

Wagered $30 to win $40.

You can keep going.

$40 - win $80

Wagered $70 to win $80

$80 - win $160

Wagered $150 to win $160

And so on. As long as you have infinitely deep pockets and the table has no limit you can't technically lose money as long as the game allows you to play.

What I was talking about up thread was the opposite strategy.

Bet $10 - win $20

Leave $20 - win $40 (lose only initial bet)

Leave $40 - win $80

Leave $80 - win $160

Pull or push it further depending on balls.

Ok so 10+20= 30

Blackjack pays your bet if you win 1:1 so if you win a 20 wager you get 40.

Your total wagered is 30 your total winning are 40.

What's so hard to understand about this.

That's incorrect. The casino didn't pay 10 it paid 40.

It's wagers and winnings. Profit has nothing to do with anything here.

What?

I guarantee the casino is pretty fucking concerned with the profit.  The chance at winning is quite literally the whole point of gambling.

If you want to look at the money you wager as being "won" on a successful bet, well I guess that's up to you.  Not sure how that makes any logical or mathematical sense.

Hand 1 :  Bet 10 ----> lose 10   = total deficit 10

Hand 2:  Bet 20-----> win 20 = total surplus 10

Total wagered $30

Yes, you retrieved $40 from the payment of the successful $20 wager.  $20 of which was already yours.

whats "nonsense" about that?

I'm sorry, what?    You "win" 10, not 40.

these aren't the same.

I'll take the badge of idoit and move on.  good luck with future gambling efforts.

In regards to OP, the martingale system would work, but unfortunately casinos have table limits(10-500 has historically been very common).  Many of which the maximum could be reached rather easily with a significant cold streak.  10-20-40-80-160-320-640.    6 hand in a row has happened personally more than I care to remember.

You're getting caught up in English semantics while immamac is using proper betting lingo that more accurately reflects the transaction.

If I place a sports bet for $100 that money is no longer mine. I am in the hole $100. The arrangement is not that - if my team loses - I pay the book $100. The arrangement is that I give the book my money and if my team wins they give me $200 back (or whatever the odds dictate).

Hence you wager $100 to win $200. You PROFIT $100.

That’s wild.

Obviously that hasn’t been my experience.  It’s always been any talk of what a person “won” was net of any wager.

oh well.  Vive la difference

Found this dangerous thread while looking for CFB "locks."

Martingale will make you a sad person. It also takes away the scenarios in which you eat into the house edge trying to get to -0.5% like doubling down, splitting, surrendering, etc.

I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the times I've lost 10-12 hands in a row. Consider those bad runs a certainty.

I discovered martingale in high school and proudly told my father that I would print money when I turned 21. I also thought I had a shot with Jennifer Love Hewitt if I could just get her to visit.

My alternative? I don't have one, and nobody should listen to me. I quit a shoe if I'm up 3 units and wait for the next one. Since counting is frowned upon by the people who matter, and booze are free/disorienting, that seems like too much work for me.

Every time I've counted on a 1-3 deck shoe, I get unlucky and still lose my bets when I press and the count is high. And I usually didn't have enough bankroll to let the statistics self correct my chip stack over time. The martingale system is hilarious, though. Back in the day, I was over my number and I told my bookie I was just going to keep doubling my bet until I won. He said ok your new limit is $1k. Doh.
