Why don't you just go ahead and tell us what you think is his last good movie.

Maybe my favorite movie of his since the Gladiator...one of my favorites to go back and watch.

It was a fun popcorn movie but didn’t come close to matching the emotional stakes of the original. Should have never expected it to, and I don’t think Ridley Scott really did either. It was more campy, especially the set pieces and comically graphic violence.

Connie Nielsen’s performance was just dreadful yet her character’s relationship to several others was crucial to the weight of the story and couldn’t deliver.

On the positive side, Denzel was cool, and the musical score was a good reprise of Hans Zimmer’s original.

And yes, the baboon sequence was distractingly cartoonish.

meh. def lacking the emotional impact of the first. i actually almost dozed off, despite demented monkeys and sharks. as an aside... if they really did things like flood the Colosseum for boat battles? that would be freaking awesome lol.

anyways...Denzel was somehow both awesome and also bored, like he could do this role in his sleep.

i didn't mind the lead, and the story itself was not bad. just didn't hit anywhere close to the original.

They did.

Only during the first year or two that it was built. During that time it could be flooded to a depth of about 5 feet. During its first year a naval battle was staged in it using scaled down flat bottomed boats.  Once the hypogeum was built under it flooding it was no longer possible.

I saw it on Thanksgiving night. I thought it was entertaining, but the cgi was not good. It rarely ever is tbh, especially when creating animals.

I also felt like I knew exactly what was going to happen as it was a really predictable script.

That said, it is worth seeing in theaters if you go to a matinee or something.

I still have a Gladiator framed poster in my theater room....I did not expect this one to touch the original, but I didn't expect it to be that bad.  I wanted to love it.

The short time on film for Pedro upset me first....

Emotional stakes just weren't there like the original.  I just didn't care for the main guy....needed some other backstory.

And his sudden acceptance of his mother overnight was weird....I didn't feel excited when he was getting Maximus' armor and sword like I should have.

Also needed subtitles.  I'm get spoiled watching shows at home.

You sure? I'd rather hear from an eyewitness...  @Armybrat ??

I mean, it's fairly well documented that they had mock sea battles in the Colosseum.

Pretty much my take away. I didn’t think the acting was particularly good outside of the two leads, although I thought the older emperor did a good job too.  I did like the use of the original movie soundtrack as well, that’s always a plus.

I thought it was entertaining but that was probably because my 13 yo really enjoyed it.

the cgi animals were REALLY bad.  Even if they did flood the coliseum, I’m sure it was with fresh water and not sea water, doubt sharks could survive.

Denzel was great but seemed really uncomfortable in robes. Felt like he was always adjusting them on screen.

Salt or fresh water aside, somebody please walk me through the shark capture and transport process before I'm buying that scene

Was so glad to be back in the gladiator universe. Could have done with one less fight or 2 for some deeper dialogue and development. Nowhere near the first one but I still liked it. Didn’t care much for Denzel’s character.

I was actually surprised Denzel was the worst bad guy. We knew his character had motivation and it made sense. Glad my recollection of Roman Empire is limited

I finally saw this today and thought it was ok.  The Maury reveal that Maximus was Lucius's father kind of came out of nowhere.

The derpy emperor twins and Denzel really leaned in to the camp.  Denzel also seemed to be leaning into the sexual fluidity of the era.
