Bitcoin mining towns: Texas Republican voters getting fucked by the Republican politicians they voted for

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Republican voters suffering from health issues caused by bitcoin mines that Republican politicians like Greg Abbott have sold them out to.  Bitcoin mines now consuming enough electricity to power 460,000 Texas homes.

All this environmental destruction in pursuit of a magic bean that doesn't exist in any tangible, physical space.

Just between you n me because of the Bama connection, but when I was 16 I worked on a summer road crew job with Gill Gayle, who grew up to do better things like playing Soapy Smith in Deadwood.

But no matter how well he does in acting, nothing will ever surpass the heroism of when the boss appointed the two of us (by far the skinniest of the lot) to shift several tons of glass beads (used for reflective signs) into a giant cube so management could cipher out how much they had left.

Some of the most recent red issues have been very anti-rural living. Take school vouchers. That will destroy small town education unless your family only wants a religious education. And forget it if you or your family actually works for the ISD.

Bitcoin mining equipment produces 2 physical things with the high use of electricity: noise and heat. A single bitcoin device sounds like a vacuum cleaner, and the granbury site referenced in the Time article has 30K of them. That place must make a racket up close, and even a dull hum nearby.

That’s like saying Reagan Republicans voted for tax cuts in order to trickle their wealth down to the middle and lower classes. Don’t confuse pretext for motive.

And it’s not just a red issue, but a Red China issue.

We could start getting brownouts on a regular basis and Abbott would thank the bitcoiners for their services. Or worse, taxpayer money going to the bitcoiners to not run their server farms.

There are still some rural Republicans who want vouchers, who do not understand that those private schools will not be coming to Bumfuck, Texas.

Now the Republican politicians that represent those areas, their bank accounts and their kids will benefit by going to private schools in Dallas, or Houston, or Austin.

It’s and issue in both Red and Blue states.  So whatever chucklefuckery is allowing it to happen in Red states it is also occurring in Blue states.

Bitcoin mining, transportation electrification, data center construction and movement away from home NG heating/appliances have demand on a trajectory the grid and generation can’t possibly meet.  We are literally sprinting down the path(pretty much there in some regions ) to third world electricity issues.  Of course that can be fixed, but I expect alot more pain before we get there

Yes, bitcoin/crypto mining is happening everywhere. No, it's not this dogshit and horrible to the communities around it everywhere. Your party is gonna keep making this state worse and worse to live in, all for the sake of some foreign investors to make a quick buck.

But hey, you just go on believing that leopard will never eat your face as you vote for it over and over and over.

Y'all making me defend Incredulity but this is correct. Bitcoin mining, AI, and large data centers are massive energy hogs, and they are all over the country. The US has been making major energy efficiency gains, keeping electricity use flat, if not declining, for most of this century despite a growing population and ever more digital life; but these things are busting that progress.

Now, to the degree that Texas is unique in selling out to land these operations and of course in the context of its inability to manage and operate a first world power grid, yeah it's the long standing party in power that gets to own it.

It's not just sweetheart deals - we the people of Texas are paying these fuckers to turn off their rigs when we need power. And they're making MORE money by simply turning off their computers than they are from actually doing the cryptomining.

Our group of happy fascists are just handing over taxpayer dollars because they think that increasing demand on our grid will magically entice more power providers to set up shop and exploit our distressed markets

They're not really all over the country.  Texas dominates bitcoin mining in the United States (and consequently, the world).  And that is in large part because, as @Captainant rightly points out, they can make more money in Texas by turning off their machines than they can anywhere actually mining bitcoin.

We're going to look back on bitcoin in the medium-term future with nothing but disgust and wonderment.  Between the physical harm it's doing to rural residents who live near these miners, the environmental harm it is doing with its electric and water consumption, and the financial harm it has done to millions of people who aren't financially literate, bitcoin has caused/is causing untold amounts of human suffering.  All for what?  A product whose sole utility is money laundering and rube-fleecing?

It really is a fair encapsulation of 34 years of Republican governance in Texas.

Yeah--that's part of the money laundering.  I mean, money laundering isn't just for blow and insider trading, now is it?

Any rational thinking on bitcoin comes to one logical conclusion: the only benefit of crypto currency is that it is untraceable. The only people who give a shit about their money not being traceable are criminals. Ergo, cryptocurrency is nothing but an enabler of criminal activity.

It's not untraceable, actually, it's just anonymous. If someone is able to figure out which wallet(s) are yours, they can pretty easily figure out literally everything you've ever spent bitcoin on.
