Binney leaves a lot to be desired as a serve specialist so far

I THINK that would normally be Ramirez but I think she tweaked something before the O&W scrimmage

This was sloppy but we weren't really engaged from the start.

The issue is we played a top 20 team and still went to 5 sets playing about as bad as we can possibly play. My worry with this team is them knowing they can just turn it on when they need to knowing they can beat 90% of the teams on the schedule.

It’s still super early and we are not going to play a lot of back to back nights like this weekend.

Need to pick and stick with a setter, same at OPP, and get Ramirez healthy to sub out Wenaas

For sure, but point I'm making is starting 2-2 last year was good IMO.

We had to improve and stay engaged because we weren't very good. Is that the case with this team?

This is a perennial problem with us, particularly facing a B12 schedule.

As good as Skinner is, I don't think I see a whole lot of leadership from her in the way, say, Logan Eggleston led.

That's why I was a bit shocked at the NC last year.  I didn't think she could do it on athletic example alone, but she pretty much did.

Back to back champs? Yes we probably need to be humbled a bit. We are also going into a different and stronger conference. I do think we have some youth and chemistry to work out, just as we did last year.  For all the accolades, we have a setter battle, an OPP battle and 2 raw middles

We will need to get all that sorted out by conference play.

Texas was #1 bc that’s what AVCA does. Nebraska should probably be #1 based on returners. Wisconsin was probably too high and Minnesota too low

Was Skinner THE leader or was it O'Neal?

I'm guessing probably O'Neal.  I think the problem is kind of inherent to having a lot of transfers.  Sort of obvious leaders like Skinner are kinda newbs to the program and probably not "feeling it" completely with team chemistry. And then there is the problem that it seems many transfers are somehow discontent with their current situation, or volleyball generally, and willing to leave it, which is probably inconsistent with taking a strong leadership role, at least for a while.

Maybe Emma is the next logical leader.

I'm not discounting Madi at all, but she is quiet.  And she spent a lot of the summer training with the USA NT, in Paris to watch her sister, marketing stuff to build her brand.  She probably could have/should have spent more time in the gym at Texas with the newbies, taking on that leadership role.

Losing program staples like O'Neal and Molly hurts.

Glad I'm not the only one that senses that a bit and wasn't aware of (or thinking of) the other extracurriculars you mention.

Some of it is probably influenced on my part that she IS a transfer, from a family that apparently generally hates Texas.

Her connection with Carlson needs a lot of work - if you notice, Carlson sets the middles/OPP much better than she does Madi, while Swindle sets Madi the best, and had some good connections with Devin.   Swindle and Madi/Devin have a year of chemistry, while Carlson probably worked more of the summer with Mari, Ayden and Reagan.

Elliot needs to pick a setter and stick with it.

With regards to Swindle, I think part of the problem is that she went back to jump setting which actually makes her setting worse.

We all saw that once she had to start setting flat-footed in the tournament because of her injury, her location and timing actually improved.

I think if she returned to that, she would be the starter because her blocking is definitely needed in the front row.

But I also think not having a true 3rd DS is hurting the team in transition. Yes, Jenna can play back row but she doesn’t consistently better the ball when digging it up in transition. And her passing tends to break down in high pressure situations. Plus, she shouldn’t be an option attacking from the back row anyways..

Agree on Swindle. And I recall Ramirez got good review during camp, so I assume she’s the third little when she’s back from whatever injury

Neither team is on your schedule this year, but this is a pretty wild anomaly.  Curious if anyone has ever seen this before, or has any idea just how rare it is to be up 8 at set point and give up 10 straight to lose the set.

Also banner night. Can we not lose this time? (We lost banner unveiling match to Stanford)

Cant wait to finally not play a B1G squad. Wisky, Minny, Indiana to start the year
