Texas Getting Michelin Star Ratings in 2025

Hidden Omakase in Houston should have a star.  They're on par with a lot of the Michelin omakase restaurants I've been to in NYC, San Fran and Tokyo.  I can't believe they didn't get anything.

Its not even a top 5 omakase in houston

Neo, Oheya, Kira, 5Kinokawa, Tins, and even their sister restaurant Sushi By Hidden are better.

in fact, id argue the 3 most overrated spots in Houston are El Tiempo, March, and Hidden Omakase

Indian fine dining is something I have often struggled to understand/enjoy, because flavor-wise it's rare that anything ever lives up to what my mom made at home on a daily basis (and still makes during the holidays). My wife, who never even had Indian food until she met me, agrees.

The one exception is Musaafer. I love that place, and am stoked as hell it got a star.

Yeah this is complete horseshit, but you're entitled to your shitty opinion I guess.

Have you happened to try Indienne in Chicago?  It sold me on Indian fine dining.

I have not, but will definitely check it out next time I'm up there, thanks for the rec.

Have heard really good things, it's on my list of places to try.

It'll be interesting to see how the Texas Monthly Top-10 compares to the 20 places that earned a star or a bib gourmand.

I'm very surprised by a lot of this. Austin having 7 restaurants earn stars is shocking, but I can see the case that can be made for all except La Barbecue. Giving La Barbecue a star but not Franklin is certainly a choice. Giving 7 Austin restaurants stars and Houston 5 (6 if you include Corkscrew), Dallas 1 and San Antonio 1 is VERY surprising.

I definitely had my local blinders on, but in hindsight, I understand the few stars overall and only one in Dallas.  When I think about my experiences at starred restaurants, the level is just higher.  I expect that chefs/owners will have to decide how far they want to reach.  For example, the biggest surprise in Dallas last night was Lucia not getting even one star, just a bib.  But, it does try to be approachable in its offerings and everything is a la carte. It's just plain good.   Will Chef Ugyur develop a tasting menu with more innovative offerings and more sophisticated plating or just keep doing his thing that has led Lucia to be one of the most popular restaurants and hardest reservations in Dallas?  Overall, lots of interesting recognitions and room to grow.  It'll be interesting to see how this plays out over the years.

Seriously.  Brisketexan's book of Michelin star restaurants in Texas would be....a much, much different book.

Any tex-mex joint that serves good chili gravy cheese enchiladas, preferably with a menu designation by number ("the #3 plate").

Luby's, as a cultural classic and Texas treasure, utterly typifying our broad state culture (fried chicken and CFS?  Yep.  Pie?  Yep.  Great cheese enchiladas?  Yep.)

At least 5 BBQ restaurants.  Some new.  Some old.

A taco truck/trailer in at least 15 different towns.

At least one no-name mexican diner in the RGV.

At least 4 different country cafes that serve fried goodness (CFS, catfish, etc.) as their specialty.

Allsup's burritos would get a cultural significance mention/nod.

A gas station in the golden triangle area that serves top quality boudin balls.

That there is Brisket's book.  Maybe not fancy tires like Michelin-worthy.  Maybe Cooper, or Falken.

And that’s fantastic.  Love the food scene in Chicago and Miami is improving leaps and bounds but Texas is amazing.  Because it’s different.  When I go down there it’s all BBQ and TexMex.  Not that I do often anyway, but I will absolutely never reference a Michelin guide when in Texas.

I've never heard of them.  Not a single one.  Now I am not all that plugged in anymore but your list sounds made up.  OFF TO THE GOOGLES

Ok Neo is the place in the clothing store and Kira is their new small concept that doesn't mention omakase but whatever.  I know BIlly so I know 5Kinokawa but haven't been.  I've had his food so I bet it's excellent.  Oheya is inside Uchi.  Tins is one I am totally unfamiliar with.

I will say that it makes me happy that BCN was rewarded.  Still my favorite place I've been in Houston.

Went there last month for the first time. Its a one and done for me. Its very similar to Coltivare here down the street. I was a little stunned that many consider it to be one of the best spots in Dallas tbh

Hopefully, they just keep doing their thing.  I've loved everything I've been served there, and the approachable factor really says a lot about the non-culinary aspect of the experience there.

Given all the BBQ places, Franklin no where to be found is the most surprising of all of it.

Franklin got a Bib Gourmand.

I’ve been to Leroy and Lewis twice in the last two weeks. My first two visits there. It’s pretty fucking outstanding. I had tried to go several times when they had the trailer, but I always got there after they sold out.

Which is kind of fucked up when you give a ton of casual BBQ a star (because Texas) but keeping Italian approachable doesn't merit same consideration.  I mean, I'm a La BBQ fan but that place having a Michelin Star and not Lucia (which has been an extremely difficult reservation for as long as I can recall) is pretty fucking laughable.

There's always some that are head scratchers.  There are 2-3 restaurants in Denver that absolutely deserve stars that got snubbed.

Brag alert - my kid has been running the kitchen at Ramen Del Barrio. Since he's started they've been a finalist for James Beard best new restaruarant and now the Michelin Bib Gourmand among other awards. the photos now on the Michelin site were dishes he made. He's a self taught grinder who woke up one day and decided he loved to cook and wanted to work in kitchens. Could not be more proud!

that's awesome man.

as for the list vis-a-vis austin, a few things surprise me, a few don't.

first, the complete omission of uchi and uchko from one star all the way down to recommendations is startling to me. i don't understand how that is possible. same for pasta bar.

second, having three bbq places get a star and not include franklin is something.

i like both hestia and olamaie but a little surprised to see them both awarded a star.

barley swine with a star and dai due with a green star both seem about right. there were a few "recommended" that I would have given bibs and vice versa. they really seem to love bbq.

I feel like Uchi is the most overrated Sushi in Austin by far. It is just crowded and loud, and the food just isn’t great. It is also a chain now so I am wondering if consistency is lacking. Craft absolutely blows it away.

Pasta Bar is surprising I agree, however they were changing chefs and GMs right as this was happening so I bet that has something to do with it.

Rumor on the street is that Michelin awarded the wrong Dallas restaurant last night. The Charles got recognition when it should have been Mister Charles.

Confirmed - https://archive.ph/5fTIj

Quote

A Recommended rating from Texas’ inaugural Michelin Guide ceremony on Nov. 11, 2024, was given to Design District restaurant The Charles. But the writeup is clearly for Mister Charles — a restaurant owned by the same parent company, Duro Hospitality, that’s totally different in style and substance than The Charles.

(More confusing still, the company owns a third Dallas restaurant with a similar name, El Carlos Elegante. El Carlos received a well-deserved Recommended rating at the Michelin ceremony.)

Michelin acknowledged the mistake on Nov. 12, 2024, calling it “an internal error caused by our geolocation process.”

And it’s confirmed: Mister Charles is the winner of a Recommended rating from Michelin 2024. The Charles was removed from the list.

Also, I presume that if we show up at RDB, and holler back at the kitchen "I'm from the internet...MULEDICK!", we'll get special treatment.  Right?

Going to Uchi for a full-on sushi meal is just dumb. The rest of the menu is where the accolades come from.
