This ☝️...

Watched the replay about an hr ago. She was definitely stronger than others throughout the race and chasing down leaders. When it was just her and the Belgian trying to catch the two leaders, they commented multiple X's that the only time her and the Belgian gained any time was when she was pulling. The Belgian was gassed and she made the perfect move with 3K left to put the hammer on the others. They tried at first to go with her, but they knew that was only going to gas them more. I think they all conceded right away to ride for 2nd/3rd right then.

It's even more amazing that she wasn't even supposed to be in the race. Only got in due to another US rider wanting to be more ready for the track. More impressive is that she really only decide to become professional about 4 yrs ago.

She gave a great post race interview about her circumstances and strategy today. Can't wait to see her on the velodrome

Yep... The other 3 just noped out after about 3 seconds and decided to hang back and ride for silver and bronze in a Sprint.

The most impressive part was her just hunting them down up that last hill. It got from 30 plus seconds to on their ass quick. Great race. Great moment. Good for her.

Kayak Cross is cool

Yeah that looks fun.  Starting the race being dumped in down a ramp is cool.

Some comments from Brits on the City Data forum about conditions for the athletes in the Olympic village.

I read the same thing Dizzy, and some athletes have taken to sleeping outside or taking a nap in the park.

There's also no air conditioning, although there are for some reason 300,000 condoms, although you would have thought they would have been too exhausted to be getting up to such antics.

I think the opening ceremony with all that woke nonsense, coupled with the poor weather set the entire scene, and watching the BBC coverage is just boring as they just sit around talking all the time rather than show many of the on-going events.

I suppose if it's one big sex festival suggested in the article below then it's probably just as well that they can dispose of the cardboard beds at the end of the games, as they are going to be covered in all kinds of stains, indeed there will be a stain and body fluid to represent every colour on the rainbow flags that are probably flying everywhere. hand.gif tongue.gif

As for the food, the French like to go on about there glorious cuisine however there seems to be little on display for the Olympic athletes, whilst Paris under Macron is now so full of immigrants it's like Mogadishu with garlic. hand.gif

Not enough e. coli  and brain-eating amoeba ...

If dodging floating bandaids and clumps of hair was an olympic event, I'm gold every time!

Has boxing even started yet?  It's probably just me but hardly ever hear it mention anymore during the games and it once was a marquee event.

Because the Americans suck at it.

Surf might be too unpredictable to be a good Olympic event. They had that one awesome day. The rest have been meh

They should just force all the competitors to hang out for a month at their nearest relative's house, smoking weed, eating fast food.  Have the people that run the event call them at 7AM and tell them "surf's up!" when it is a good day. They have to load everything in their car and be in the water in 30 minutes or they are DQ'd.

which reminds me. Does MMA show up at the olympics?

we also need an Olympic Bar Day

ax throwing, bowling, minigolf, darts, cornhole.  In fact, MMA could be the closer at 2AM.

you could have Bar Pentathlon of the first 5.

I couldn’t get mad at the judges if they had moved her ahead of Marks there at the end.  She didn’t need a big score, and did some great turns.  She probably squeezed every tenth of a point possible out of the last wave.

Marks tied her semifinal matchup but advanced to the final based on best single score.  She won the final match by 0.17.  Two matches won for a gold medal by a combined 0.17.

I wasn’t listening closely but what was the tiebreaker in her semi match?  Highest scored ride?

Yes, her last one pulled her into a tie and was the highest of the four scored waves between the two surfers. The Costa Rican woman in the other semi was in good shape until she brain farted and jumped a wave when she didn’t have priority. The penalty for that was she only got to use one wave in her score. Tough rule.

So many reasons for this and as a former amateur boxing dilettante it makes me bummed.  We are still the world leaders in boxing medals.

USA boxing is shambolic and poorly organized at the amateur level.  At the pro levels, the continual pursuit of short term business before long term health of the sport.  It’s so fucking hard to get into and watch the fights if you’re not already a fight fan, fighting on cable is mostly dead.  The local circuit is on life support because of so many other entertainment options.

The focus of amateur boxing is in the nations of the former Soviet Union and eastern bloc, where there are organized and funded governing bodies and where coaches and promising athletes get a government salary and living.  That does not exist here. The crack up of the Soviet Union brought more countries to the table.  It’s important and invested in at the state level.

Boxers used to be very well paid relative to other pro athletes. It’s a hard life and way to make a living and if you’re an athletic kid with a mean streak you can go other routes.  In a prior generation, Miles Garrett is facing Maxx Crosby in an MSG title tilt.

MMA and other real combat sports are more accessible and fixed in the culture and more accessible for the kid who wants to try things out. As a parent, you feel a lot better putting your 12 year old in BJJ versus lacing up the gloves and trying on some CTE.

Latinos keep the sport alive in the U.S. and since amateur boxing switched to points instead of rounds.  But they are training their fighters for pro fighting.  Mexico is maybe the world’s overall great fighting nation but only has two gold medals (both 1968).  They’re training to prizefight from their first day in the gym.

Watching the surfing replay. I can’t wait to see where they place them in 2028. I sure hope it’s local here to watch. Great contest all around love watching Tahiti on tv other than Surfline
