The one I think of is the 2001 Big XII Championship game v. Colorado in Irving.  Major comes roaring in, taunting the Buffalo bench.  Almost pulled it off.

But then some Colorado players only committed light misdemeanors.  Kamala is going up against a 34-time convicted felon.

Simms gets Texas into a huge hole vs Colorado in the Big XII championship game. Eventually gets hurt in the game right before half time with Texas basically out of the contest. Applewhite comes in and immediately throws a bomb TD, then goads the Colorado bench:

He gets Texas within a field goal but Colorado scores late and squashes the improable comeback. People immediately call for Applewhite to start in the Holiday bowl after, which he gets the nod over Simms cause Simms is still injured. Again Texas finds itself in a hole late in the game, down 16 with less than a quarter to go. Applewhite goes nuclear and gives Texas the lead for the first time on the day with a few minutes to go. Washington marches down the field with a 70 yard drive and regains the lead with roughly 1 minute to go. Applewhite comes in and moves Texas down the field on big passing plays, with Texas scoring the go-ahead TD on 3rd and goal with 43 seconds left. Applewhite walks to the end of the Texas sideline by himself and weeps on the field as that was his final play as a Longhorn, going out a come-from-behind winner.

That bowl game was the one I was thinking of. Didn't remember that Applewhite had started the game, just remembered the late comeback.

But he redeemed himself in the end. That was back when I was in high school, and was briefly a UT fan (Dad went there). I always liked Applewhite.

It was hard not to love Applewhite.  The dude seemed to always play his best in the clutch and, physically,  he looked like a 14-year-old doing it against grown-ass men with a helmet one size too big.

His game winning TD against Nebraska in 98 is one of the best plays in Texas history and it was all Applewhite. Ricky rightfully gets a lot of love for that game, but Applewhite improvised the game winner on an all-time play:

1 hour 22minutes 50 seconds in. That mushmouth call, "Rolling... diving... TD Texas!" is so great. Applewhite got crushed and took an enormous hit on that play, but stood tall and made the throw. You can see him injured on the field celebrating after the TD. What a badass.

Shapiro is the right pick. He practically guarantees PA which is critical.

Still fail to see why, as noted last night, Democrats have won 7 of the last 8 presidential elections in PA. Only Hillary lost it since the 1988 election when Bush won it. None of the winners were from PA, unless you count Biden who represented Delaware but is from Scranton

PA has been won by Dems in 7 of the last 8 elections. They don't need Shapiro.

Yeah, Shapiro just has too many negatives and possible issues on his ledger. I would think after Vance's mess of an intro that her team would double, triple, and quadruple vet the candidates.

That said, I feel like a lot of us are going to be posting, "I'm stunned, I'm pissed, it's Josh Shapiro".

I don't think Beshear is any sort of talented pol as a lot of his Democrat red state governorship credentials are thanks to his dad being a former popular governor of the state and associated name recognition.  I find him the most "undistinguishable" of all the potential candidates but that's probably why he's the best running mate.

Walz or Buttigieg, as many have said, are the choices if you are trying to get 350+ in the electoral vote.  Either has far more juice and Walz has an incredible record of achievement as governor and Buttigieg combines being a policy wonk with the gift of communicating the value of it to the everyday lives of the middle and working class.

Beshear is good looking, competent, and boring.  I'm good with that.

Walz and Buttigieg (and Shapiro in PA) are your bulldogs on the campaign.

That's a really, really fucked up case but I don't know how anyone can blame the guy who was the AG at the time. The Medical Examiner concluded it was a suicide. <Somehow she managed to stab herself 20 times. Sure thing.> That's what sunk the case - the incompetence or, more likely, deceit of the ME. I believe Shapiro wasn't even an elected official at the time of the murder.

I keep going back to the fact that I wouldn't want him to be president. All the others I wouldn't mind, but that's a big deal to me.

I'm team Walz.

But isn’t it just like his office settling the sexual harassment case - if you have to explain to voters why this ain’t actually bad, you’ve lost the issue. Because the GOP is going to twist it so badly To distract from Vance

do no harm

imo the sexual harassment case is worse because he was actively involved in it. I edited my comment to add that Shapiro wasn't even an elected official at the time of the suicide/murder. I think the so-called murder coverup could be easily combatted if Shapiro is the pick. But I hope he's not.

Trump and is cronies are desperate for a Dem scandal. Everything they've tried so far with Kamala has fallen flat. Republican strategists are going on TV saying she should pick Shapiro because of PA and that "anti-semitism" within the D party is the only thing holding him back.

They smell blood with Josh Shapiro on the ticket. No doubt in my mind.

Yeah,

tim Kaine really brought a lot to the ticket.

At least big, bad Fox News couldn’t argue he had once done something they disagreed with.

for fucks sake, let’s not piss our pants in the corner over someone doing something MAGA might disagree with.

Republicans disagree with our VP pick over some issues?

He didn’t really need to? The fuckup was the top of the ticket being scandal ridden and refusing to campaign in swing states.

Tim Kaine and Mike Pence were the most boring, unsexy picks and neither did any harm to the top of the ticket. The POTUS candidates were both so horrifically unlikeable and scandal ridden

LAST edit: Tim Kaine was also on the shortlist for Obama as the VA governor at the time. He was just fine enough that he made the shortlist for 2 candidates and ultimately was picked by Hillary.

More than any of Shapiro's positions, there's something about his personality that gives me the vibe that he believes he's the smartest guy in the room and I personally don't find that a good trait.

He's polished enough that it doesn't come to light much, but under pressure and in stressful situations or when pressed by journalists, it comes out enough to spook me.

He arguably ONLY an asset in PA and he can play that role effectively off the ticket.  Let him do that and let him plan for a run at the presidency at some later point in a primary.

He will play a big role in getting Harris elected but I don't think he should be her VP.

The argument I can see for Shapiro is Dem strategists believe the GOP will frame it Team Israel (R) vs Team Hamas (D) and enough voters would hold their nose and vote for Trump because of the importance of that issue. Shapiro would blunt that attack significantly.

The argument that he delivers Pennsylvania makes me roll my eyes when he can't even deliver his own Lt Governor

A thorough balanced assessment exercise would reveal strengths and weaknesses in each of these qualified candidates. The more  I watch Walz’s rather beguiling way of persuasion, the more I like him. I really like how he calls out Trump for speaking so negatively about the country he wants to lead. That said, I’m prepared to support whomever she chooses.

Dems read Surly.

Spoiler

The competitive, divisive primary that many Democrats long wanted to avoid has arrived anyway — playing out largely behind closed doors in a fight over the bottom of the ticket.

The final stage of the campaign to be Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate reached something of an ugly phase in recent days as donors, interest groups and political rivals from the party’s moderate and progressive wings lobbied for their preferred candidates and passed around memos debating the contenders’ political weaknesses with key demographics.

They turned most sharply on one of the favorites to join the ticket, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who has drawn opposition from progressives and even a senator in his home state.

The fissures among Democrats emerged as three leading contenders — Mr. Shapiro, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota — met with Ms. Harris at her residence in Washington on Sunday, ahead of a decision her campaign said would be announced by Tuesday.

Kevin Munoz, a spokesman for the Harris campaign, declined to comment on the Sunday meetings.

Ms. Harris is set to hit the campaign trail with her running mate this week, kicking off a five-day, seven-state tour with a Tuesday night rally in Philadelphia, where Mr. Shapiro is expected to be in attendance, whether he is her pick or not.

Progressive groups have trained their criticisms on Mr. Shapiro and Mr. Kelly, who they accuse of being too conservative on key issues. Shawn Fain, the head of the United Autoworkers Union, said during a Sunday interview on CBS that Mr. Kelly had “not really” assuaged the union’s concerns about his commitment to pro-labor legislation and that the organization had “bigger issues” with Mr. Shapiro’s support for school vouchers.

Major Democratic donors have signaled that they would be fine with any of the candidates on Ms. Harris’s list of finalists, but there are divisions among the biggest Democratic givers. A vigorous debate has been waged on an email group for the Democracy Alliance, where left-wing donors have expressed concerns about Mr. Shapiro.

Another group of progressive activists, communicating through an email group called Gamechanger Salon, have come out against Mr. Shapiro and pushed its members to highlight his stances on Israel’s war in Gaza. The debate grew heated during a discussion about whether using the phrase “Genocide Josh” to describe Mr. Shapiro, who is an observant Jew, was antisemitic. An organizer called for calm and rebranded the email chain, “Why Josh Shapiro should not be the VP.” Some of the emails also called for members to push for Mr. Walz, who has become a favorite of the party’s most liberal contributors, about 60 of whom he addressed on Friday.

One message, written by Billy Wimsatt, an executive director of a liberal donor group known as the Movement Voter Project, said that Mr. Shapiro could cause a drop in turnout among progressive voters who are concerned about Israel’s war. “He risks significantly depressing enthusiasm for the Harris ticket among key constituencies of young voters, Arab and Muslim voters, and to some degree labor,” he wrote in an email thread, which was shared with The Times. “Tim Walz is the perfect Harris VP unicorn for this moment.”

Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who has long clashed with Mr. Shapiro, has also expressed displeasure at the prospect of the governor being elevated to a national ticket, according to two people who have spoken with him. One of his advisers called the Harris campaign to object to Mr. Shapiro, a development that was first reported by Politico.

Manuel Bonder, a spokesman for Mr. Shapiro, declined to comment on the vice-presidential selection process.

The growing attacks on Mr. Shapiro have been rebuked by some moderates in the party and others in the media. Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” issued a forceful defense of the Pennsylvania governor on X, saying the recent attacks on him were “a toxic mix of antisemitism, extremist views on Gaza, and jealous colleagues who don’t want to be blocked out of the presidential sweepstakes for the next decade.”

A group of progressive donors in recent days has been making a push for the Mr. Walz, the Minnesota governor. Over the last week, Democratic operatives including Doran Schrantz, an adviser to Faith in Minnesota PAC, and Mr. Wimsatt have circulated a memo called “The Case for Tim Walz for Vice President,” hoping to sway Ms. Harris.

A similar document touting Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary who headlined a Harris fund-raiser in New Hampshire on Saturday, was circulated last week to Democrats, including major donors.

On Sunday, Mr. Kelly posted to social media, then subsequently deleted, a message that curiously said he would now be focused on his home state.

“My background is a bit different than most politicians.” Mr. Kelly wrote. “I spent my life serving in the Navy and at NASA, where the mission always comes first. Now, my mission is serving Arizonans.”

Mr. Shapiro has emerged as the choice of the party’s pro-Israel donors, those with ties to the school-choice movement and business-friendly contributors in Silicon Valley. But his centrist positions that appeal to those groups are the same ones that make him the least favorite of the party’s most liberal funders.

An apparent compromise candidate like Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky, who has fans both among the party’s more liberal and more centrist contributors, also could emerge as nominee. Mr. Beshear has spent time over the last two weeks auditioning before multiple groups of major donors who have been eager to kick the tires on him, including one invite-only session this past Friday evening, according to two people briefed on his activities.

Mr. Beshear was not known to have participated in Ms. Harris’s final interviews Sunday, but he was spotted with his labradoodle, Winnie, outside the governor’s residency in Frankfort, Ky.

“Just walking the dog this morning,” Mr. Beshear responded when asked about his plans for the day.

Mr. Walz and Mr. Beshear are set to appear at dueling, simultaneous fund-raisers to benefit Ms. Harris on Monday evening in Minneapolis and Chicago, respectively. Mr. Walz’s event was sold out as of Sunday evening; tickets remained available for Mr. Beshear’s event.

By that point, Ms. Harris’s decision is likely to already have been made.

For me if EC math was not a thing I would prefer Pete. Shapiro and PA is big of course but they have to be confident there are no unintended consequences on MI or WI. Walz is awesome but right or wrong I wonder if the central casting angle comes into play? Beshear seems somewhat of a mix between Shapiro and Walz. I wonder how they feel about him helping reinforce the blue wall or do they think he brings in GA and NC relying on Harris for the blue wall?
