The one I think of is the 2001 Big XII Championship game v. Colorado in Irving.  Major comes roaring in, taunting the Buffalo bench.  Almost pulled it off.

But then some Colorado players only committed light misdemeanors.  Kamala is going up against a 34-time convicted felon.

Expand

Simms gets Texas into a huge hole vs Colorado in the Big XII championship game. Eventually gets hurt in the game right before half time with Texas basically out of the contest. Applewhite comes in and immediately throws a bomb TD, then goads the Colorado bench:

He gets Texas within a field goal but Colorado scores late and squashes the improable comeback. People immediately call for Applewhite to start in the Holiday bowl after, which he gets the nod over Simms cause Simms is still injured. Again Texas finds itself in a hole late in the game, down 16 with less than a quarter to go. Applewhite goes nuclear and gives Texas the lead for the first time on the day with a few minutes to go. Washington marches down the field with a 70 yard drive and regains the lead with roughly 1 minute to go. Applewhite comes in and moves Texas down the field on big passing plays, with Texas scoring the go-ahead TD on 3rd and goal with 43 seconds left. Applewhite walks to the end of the Texas sideline by himself and weeps on the field as that was his final play as a Longhorn, going out a come-from-behind winner.

That bowl game was the one I was thinking of. Didn't remember that Applewhite had started the game, just remembered the late comeback.

But he redeemed himself in the end. That was back when I was in high school, and was briefly a UT fan (Dad went there). I always liked Applewhite.

It was hard not to love Applewhite.  The dude seemed to always play his best in the clutch and, physically,  he looked like a 14-year-old doing it against grown-ass men with a helmet one size too big.

His game winning TD against Nebraska in 98 is one of the best plays in Texas history and it was all Applewhite. Ricky rightfully gets a lot of love for that game, but Applewhite improvised the game winner on an all-time play:

1 hour 22minutes 50 seconds in. That mushmouth call, "Rolling... diving... TD Texas!" is so great. Applewhite got crushed and took an enormous hit on that play, but stood tall and made the throw. You can see him injured on the field celebrating after the TD. What a badass.

Shapiro is the right pick. He practically guarantees PA which is critical.

Still fail to see why, as noted last night, Democrats have won 7 of the last 8 presidential elections in PA. Only Hillary lost it since the 1988 election when Bush won it. None of the winners were from PA, unless you count Biden who represented Delaware but is from Scranton

Yeah, Shapiro just has too many negatives and possible issues on his ledger. I would think after Vance's mess of an intro that her team would double, triple, and quadruple vet the candidates.

That said, I feel like a lot of us are going to be posting, "I'm stunned, I'm pissed, it's Josh Shapiro".

I don't think Beshear is any sort of talented pol as a lot of his Democrat red state governorship credentials are thanks to his dad being a former popular governor of the state and associated name recognition.  I find him the most "undistinguishable" of all the potential candidates but that's probably why he's the best running mate.

Walz or Buttigieg, as many have said, are the choices if you are trying to get 350+ in the electoral vote.  Either has far more juice and Walz has an incredible record of achievement as governor and Buttigieg combines being a policy wonk with the gift of communicating the value of it to the everyday lives of the middle and working class.

Beshear is good looking, competent, and boring.  I'm good with that.

Walz and Buttigieg (and Shapiro in PA) are your bulldogs on the campaign.

That's a really, really fucked up case but I don't know how anyone can blame the guy who was the AG at the time. The Medical Examiner concluded it was a suicide. <Somehow she managed to stab herself 20 times. Sure thing.> That's what sunk the case - the incompetence or, more likely, deceit of the ME. I believe Shapiro wasn't even an elected official at the time of the murder.

But isn’t it just like his office settling the sexual harassment case - if you have to explain to voters why this ain’t actually bad, you’ve lost the issue. Because the GOP is going to twist it so badly To distract from Vance

do no harm

imo the sexual harassment case is worse because he was actively involved in it. I edited my comment to add that Shapiro wasn't even an elected official at the time of the suicide/murder. I think the so-called murder coverup could be easily combatted if Shapiro is the pick. But I hope he's not.

Trump and is cronies are desperate for a Dem scandal. Everything they've tried so far with Kamala has fallen flat. Republican strategists are going on TV saying she should pick Shapiro because of PA and that "anti-semitism" within the D party is the only thing holding him back.

They smell blood with Josh Shapiro on the ticket. No doubt in my mind.

Yeah,

tim Kaine really brought a lot to the ticket.

At least big, bad Fox News couldn’t argue he had once done something they disagreed with.

for fucks sake, let’s not piss our pants in the corner over someone doing something MAGA might disagree with.

Republicans disagree with our VP pick over some issues?

He didn’t really need to? The fuckup was the top of the ticket being scandal ridden and refusing to campaign in swing states.

Tim Kaine and Mike Pence were the most boring, unsexy picks and neither did any harm to the top of the ticket. The POTUS candidates were both so horrifically unlikeable and scandal ridden

LAST edit: Tim Kaine was also on the shortlist for Obama as the VA governor at the time. He was just fine enough that he made the shortlist for 2 candidates and ultimately was picked by Hillary.

More than any of Shapiro's positions, there's something about his personality that gives me the vibe that he believes he's the smartest guy in the room and I personally don't find that a good trait.

He's polished enough that it doesn't come to light much, but under pressure and in stressful situations or when pressed by journalists, it comes out enough to spook me.

He arguably ONLY an asset in PA and he can play that role effectively off the ticket.  Let him do that and let him plan for a run at the presidency at some later point in a primary.

He will play a big role in getting Harris elected but I don't think he should be her VP.

Some of y’all are overthinking this to a point that you don’t want Shapiro to be the automatic front runner, as President Harris’ 2nd term is ending, in 2032. The important time frame is the next 90 days.

The argument I can see for Shapiro is Dem strategists believe the GOP will frame it Team Israel (R) vs Team Hamas (D) and enough voters would hold their nose and vote for Trump because of the importance of that issue. Shapiro would blunt that attack significantly.

The argument that he delivers Pennsylvania makes me roll my eyes when he can't even deliver his own Lt Governor

A thorough balanced assessment exercise would reveal strengths and weaknesses in each of these qualified candidates. The more  I watch Walz’s rather beguiling way of persuasion, the more I like him. I really like how he calls out Trump for speaking so negatively about the country he wants to lead. That said, I’m prepared to support whomever she chooses.

For me if EC math was not a thing I would prefer Pete. Shapiro and PA is big of course but they have to be confident there are no unintended consequences on MI or WI. Walz is awesome but right or wrong I wonder if the central casting angle comes into play? Beshear seems somewhat of a mix between Shapiro and Walz. I wonder how they feel about him helping reinforce the blue wall or do they think he brings in GA and NC relying on Harris for the blue wall?
