[Harris+Walz] The 2024 DNC: TURN DOWN FOR WHAT?!

I don't think he's there to sway rural maga types, they are hopeless, and referring to them as "blue collar voters" feels really, really off to me. But even if he's right, his job again isn't to sway maga voters, it's to fire up existing democrats and sway the middle who are mostly apathetic towards politics and seeing a likeable person in general might be enough to get them to the polls.

You don't need to sway a single rural voter.  And that's not the point in appealing to them.    You still have to put on the show of appealing to rural voters for two reasons:

1) Suburban and (particularly) exurban swing-ish voters are frequently not far removed from rural/small-town existence.  A voter in Frisco or Conroe is quite likely to have grown up in Longview or in rural Austin County.  And so while we write off those people on this message board as "hopeless" and their communities as "dying," those voters take it as a personal insult when that view is expressed, even if they privately would concede the truth of it.  So part of appealing to those suburban and exurban voters is making the show of trying to conciliate their friends and family who are still in rural areas.

2) I've shared the experience before of my first campaign, when I had the conscious thought "well, the country will survive if Bill Clinton becomes president."  And it was at that moment that I knew Bush would lose.  Because I knew that if I was having that thought, other Republicans were, too.  And at least a certain number of those Republicans would be so consoled by the thought that they wouldn't vote.  So yeah--you don't have to sway any rural voters.  But if you can persuade just a small number of them that it wouldn't be the end of the world if Harris and Walz won, then you not only hurt Trump, but you also hurt Republicans straight down the ballot.

My wife is from the panhandle.  Spent the first four years of her professional career in the Minneapolis area. She hated the weather, because it started to snow in October, and didn't fully melt until almost May.  And dreary every day in between.

I'm originally from Nebraska, but lived in Minneapolis for a year.  In Nebraska, you have the snow/melt cycles.  In Minny, it's like you say. So, for Nebraska winters,  you stay inside and work around the cold/snow for decent weather to get outside.  In Minneapolis, they just plan on playing in the snow - cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing - even weekly parades downtown in bitch ass cold weather.  It seems to work for them.

My boss told me to head out a couple hours early a couple of times because of the weather. (And it took 3 hours to get home.)  But, if it was that bad, there was no way I was going to go in on a heavy snow day.

On point #1, mainstream country music is written specifically for these people, which is why it sucks.  It's music that romanticizes small towns for people who like in the exurbs who are from small towns but forgot why they left the small towns in the first place.

Literally. JD Vance will spend the debate running circles around Walz yelling about women having children and looking for a couch. It will be weird.

Other than that, she liked her time there.

My kid asked me when we were moving to Minnesota.  I told her global warming still has some work to do before that can happen.  She's only lived in Thailand, Nigeria and Houston.  She ain't exactly built for cold weather - and neither am I to be honest about it.

Speaking of Peggy Flanagan, if Walz wins, she'd be elevated to governor - first female governor of Minnesota and first Native American woman to serve as governor in US history (White Earth Nation)

my two newly registered 18 year olds were on Team Walz for the last 3 weeks or so.

Now the hard part, getting one of them an absentee ballot for November as he is going to college out of state.

That's easy enough.  As soon as they know their mailing address, have them fill out one of these applications and send it to your County Election Administrator/Clerk.  Link for Texas VBM application.  The sooner you get it in, the better.  Suggestion to follow it up with a call to EA to insure it arrived and was properly logged.    AND it's something you have to do every year, not just once.  Goes for anyone expected to be out of their voting county during early voting and ED.

Does anyone else here think the Olympics will be an unintended tailwind on the election?  By that, I mean they've been just murdering the ratings and it's been very well done by NBC.  Tons of great stories in there and they're happy stories.  My point is that people like happy stories.  America is a happy place, at least most of us want it to be.  Walz is the poster child for a happy warrior.  Harris isn't bad, either.  Meanwhile, on the other side, every day something happens that is the worst thing ever.

Anyway, my .02.

it has been nice to see American flags somewhere besides the bed of a jacked up f250 too.

Yeah.  I listen to that shit, and I think "what's so great about a dirt road...dirt roads suck", and "who the fuck wants to live in some shithole that's so flat it needs a water tower?"

I saw somewhere Walz is the first major party nominee not to have attended law school since 1980. Crazy if true

Good.

Although neither George W. Bush nor Dick Cheney attended law school.

I think that has played a big part in why he comes off as so much more authentic than most politicians. Just a hunch though. Holy hell he's going to look so much better than greasy Yale Law chameleon vance

He puts a very friendly and relatable face on progressive politics. He’s authentic in the way that JD Vance is so fake

And Corporate Media right on cue

FIFY. The Times needs to keep getting fucked. They, like CNN, only want a Trump 2nd term to keep the money flowing in because it's a lot easier to sell outrage.

Uh, no.  H.W. Bush never attended law school and he was on the ticket in 1984, 1988, and 1992.

W. Bush never attended law school.

Dick Cheney never attended law school.

John Kerry never attended law school.

Mitt Romney never attended law school.

Paul Ryan did not attend law school.

John McCain did not attend law school.

I'll give you a pass on falling for "saw somewhere" because most of the above seem like they were lawyers at some point.  But I can't give you a pass on two glaring fucking examples of major party nominees who not only couldn't get into law school, probably couldn't complete a GED right now----Donald Trump and Sarah Palin

I wonder how long they think they can get away with saying "X democrat will take away everyone's guns" without it ever actually even coming close to happening.

How are there even any guns left? I thought Obama was taking all of them. Weird.

They think they can get away with it forever and they’re right. Every time a Democrat is elected, gun sales skyrocket.
