Good post mortem on the protests:

Protests at the Democrats’ Convention Weren’t as Big and Disruptive as Some Expected
Pro-Palestinian organizers predicted overwhelming turnout that would take their case directly to the Democrats. Protesters gathered, but they did not steal the show.

It wasn’t 1968. It wasn’t even close.

After months of anticipation, planning and vows of mass protest in Chicago that called to mind the tumult of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the demonstrators who challenged the Democratic Party over the conflict in Gaza remained largely in the background.

While thousands of people joined enthusiastic daily protests in parks and on the streets of Chicago, a city with a deep history of protests, their numbers were fewer than organizers had hoped.

All week, demonstrators chanted and marched near the convention site, angrily calling for a cease-fire and an end to U.S. aid for Israel, but failed to seriously disrupt the convention and its celebration of Vice President Kamala Harris, the party’s presidential nominee. Though many demonstrators hoped that the convention organizers would grant a speaker of Palestinian descent a chance to address the crowd, that request was ultimately denied.

And after four days of protesters pushing to make the war in Gaza a focus of the convention, its final evening on Thursday ended with Ms. Harris directly acknowledging the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and repeating calls for a cease-fire, but also centering her speech on discussions of abortion access, immigration and the record of her opponent.

“There is some sort of wall between what we’re saying and what these politicians are willing to hear,” Josephine Guilbeau, an Army veteran, said at a pro-Palestinian protest on Thursday, lamenting that Democratic leaders had mostly ignored the cries of protesters.

On the last night of the convention, protesters acknowledged they were tired after days of demonstrations, but hundreds marched until after 9 p.m. Organizers summed up the week on an optimistic note, pointing out that President Biden had mentioned “protesters out in the street” when he addressed the convention.

Hatem Abudayyeh, an organizer of the largest protest marches, said that the group’s activism had brought together a range of causes on the left, letting Democrats know that many voters are looking for a policy change on the Israel-Hamas war.

“We didn’t expect that in four days of the D.N.C., that all of a sudden, 75 years of policy on Palestine are going to be changed and they were going to say, ‘We’re going to stop Israel today,’” Mr. Abudayyeh said. “But what we do believe is that they heard us.”

Others in attendance said they had hoped for more robust numbers at the demonstrations.

“I think the passion is still there,” Robert Felton, 46, a case worker for the state of Illinois, said at a rally on Tuesday. “I would like to see maybe a little bit more passion in Chicago. I think I just was hoping the movement was a little bit bigger.”

A large share of us have completely dropped Xitter and, therefore, can no longer read anything Xits beyond the first one in a thread. However, there's a bot called "Thread reader" that basically rolls up all of the Xits in a nice package that allows non-Xitters to read the full Xit in a single link that you can post here.

Edit: See @safe sex's link.

I appreciate that she acknowledged the problem, but the DNC's favoritism is a bad look and judging by the social media from Uncommitted it risks steering many voters to Cornel West, Jill Stein, or to stay home. I'll post a more detailed explanation in the Israel thread when I have time.

yeah i voted for Biden in 2020 because he wasn't Trump and would have been happy to do so again this year if it came to it.  But now I'm actualy excited to be voting for Kamala.

Same. We’ve donated. I’ve only done that one other time for Ron Paul for Congress.

I’ll admit that prior to last night, my primary, and really sole reason for voting for her was because she’s not Trump.  But she was eloquent, direct, and frankly presidential in her delivery.  I have confidence she can perform well in the job.  I think she’s going to absolutely destroy him in a debate.  He’s got to be shitting his pants about that.  Although he probably does that on the reg anyway.

I still don't think he'll debate her. This is why he keeps trying to front load the Fox debate the first week of September, well before the signed off on ABC debate.  He has stated that the Fox debate will continue whether she shows up or not.  She has never indicated that she would debate anything before they're agreed upon ABC debate precisely so he wouldn't back out of it. My guess is that both will debate an empty podium in their time slots, except hers will play to a wider audience, whereas his is built in.

I'll be shocked if Trump debates her. It's possible that he could be down enough in the polls that even he sees it as a necessity but he would still likely decline. Of course he won't position it as an invite decline. He will say that Biden is the real nominee who had the nomination illegally stolen and Trump won't support that action.

He's not shitting his pants. At least not out of fear. That's not how narcisism works. Dollars to donuts, he thinks he's gonig to just destroy her, and that will be that. He doesn't understand that his inability to control himself will be a huge detriment, because by and large, his lack of control has never really cost him much in his life he couldn't wiggle away from in some fashion or another.

If I'm harris, I prepare a few biting comments if he does the lurk around shit like he did with Hillary.

I'm unsure if he can have a worse look than from last night on fox news. "She's going to give a tax increase of 4 to 5 times what people and companies are paying right now" while simultaneously punching the the 4 and 5 buttons on his phone to accentuate his point.

In a weird way he may be right since he personally pays so little in taxes that 5x-ing that amount may only get him aligned to the average worker.

I had no idea Biden would be as good as he's been. This go-round, I'm fucking EXCITED to vote FOR Harris/Walz and not just AGAINST the orange fuckstick.

Trump will not go on a debate where the network will fact check him. In the Biden debate, he was allowed to spew all kinds of bullshit and was not called out for it. We saw how that turned out with Biden getting the bad reviews from that debate while nothing came of Trump's bullshit lies.

I imagine that's why he wants to debate on Fox because they will not fact check his bullshit.

There's no way his team allows him to debate a prosecutor whose is well versed in debating while getting called out for this bullshit by the moderator. His team has to want him to lose to allow it.
