[Harris+Walz] The 2024 DNC: TURN DOWN FOR WHAT?!

Kelly’s big issue was that he was against the PRO Act until he was a VP contender. You need those unions to go out and canvass. Culinary in NV, hospitality has pledged to knock on 3.3 million doors

I think Walz fits the "we're not going back" message better than anyone else, too. Kelly was too anti-labor until five minutes ago and Shapiro definitely has strong Obama technocrat anti-labor lean tendencies. Either to me feels like going back to the Democratic party of 2008 on labor issues, which I really do not like.

Of course, the party is very different today than it was then and they will be pushed left, but they and the people around them will be more resistant to those pushing than I would prefer.

Please. It's not the end of the world, he's just a candidate that's much easier for the GOP to message against, and there's no guarantee he would move the needle at all as the VP pick vs. just staying PA governor and showing his support there.

See, I disagree wholeheartedly here.

I absolutely buy the "excitement" angle and truthfully think that is enough to not pick him.  But all of the criticism of Shapiro is due to the moderate/conservative shit he's done.  Is the GOP suddenly going to become anti-Israel?  Anti-vouchers?  Anti-fracking?  You think they're going to willingly bring sexual harassment into the equation for this election?

There are reasons to not pick Shapiro, but "easy for GOP to attack" ain't one of them.

Kelly's strength is that he would give some independents relief about border issues. He, and honesty Harris, would be able to talk from the standpoint of a state most impacted by our southern border immigration. Trumpists would still rather listen to Trump or Vance talk about it but Kelly has been critical of Dems' past mistakes which gives him street cred on the issue. But not going into Stephen Miller territory.

100%. Shapiro is a coalition builder in a purple state. You do this by finding common ground on issues or working to a compromise. Which is exactly how you win a national election by running to the middle. If Trump/Vance want to run further to the right, don't stop them from making that mistake. Let Harris/Shapiro run from the center-left. If they lose a few from the more-extreme Left, then so be it.

I'm cool with earning a few million independents at the loss of a 100K extremists.

If someone is worried that Harris/Shapiro are too in bed with Israel, is that voter seriously going to run to Trump who is arm in arm with Netanyahu? There's a reason that Bibi wants Trump to win. And don't fall for the TexAgs gaslighting where they claim they can't wait for Shapiro to be chosen.

Some radical republican weirdo is already putting out Walz oppo shit like his apparent DUI and is waiting for this pick to release more stuff.

They really are trying bad to turn the tables lol

Side note: The people at Bulwark do a good job, but they are all former Republicans. They are gaining way too much trust in the Dem world because of their anti-Trump stance.

Most of them are never-Trump former republicans. Jonathan V Last (who normally writes their daily morning email) and Will Saletan are Dems.

To their credit they understand elections and the electoral college. Sarah Longwell’s focus groups might be the most powerful thing going in shaping the narrative (and probably helped get Biden pushed out).

Hell, maybe you're right, but it's not like the GOP is above blatant hypocrisy in their messaging. There will be plenty of veiled antisemitic stuff in there, too, that will land hard with the base, but I guess won't bring many (or any) new votes in. Like I said before, nothing he is done is nearly bad enough to make me not want to vote D in November. It's enough to make me side eye him pretty hard, but not much more than that.

The internal debate that I go back and forth on in my undecided head is whether Shapiro is simply one of those politicians who becomes a "lightning rod" for criticism from any number of political sides and for whatever reasons. In the end, he may well be the ideal running mate for Harris, but he's already getting negative press, which admittedly could cool off if he's selected. It's probably naive to think that way, though, since we all know national media loves any sniff of a scandal. God forbid anything of real substance comes out. But, of course, that applies to the relatively unknown Walz, too.

Right now, I'm viewing it as someone else picking between two bowls of ice cream for me: chocolate or vanilla. Overall, I'd prefer the former, but I'd be completely okay with the latter. Shit, they're both ice cream, and you can't really lose with a good bowl of ice cream (unless you find a piece of dookie hidden in there).

I guess my counter to this is that Shapiro has been widely considered as a future star of the party for years, and competed in a high visibility, competitive election for Governor.  His oppo file was constructed a while ago and his shit is known, for better or worse.  Meanwhile, none of us knew who Walz was a month ago, and just TODAY I'm seeing information about a DUI and a photo of him with Netanyahu make it's way across social media.

Walz is being made into a folk hero.  He's likable as hell and he very well might be one, but I also think there's a bit of willful ignorance involved in putting him on this pedestal.

I think you’re overstating how well known Shapiro was prior to this to the vast majority of voters. I know he’s who you want, but for most voters this process has been the introduction to both potential picks.

That's fair.  My point was mainly that there's likely been much more scrutiny from an oppo perspective on Shapiro given the state he represents and general perception of his future within the party, but you're right that most folks didn't know either of these dudes before a month ago (and, if we're being honest, still don't).

I agree with this. He's been on the Beltway Dem radar for a while and he's in the Northeast around a ton of media. More oppo, but also more hype because they are more comfortable and familiar with him compared to guys like Walz and Beshear.

You joke, but some real talk here--for a lot of the country up until about 2010, a DUI was just the cost of doing business.  Outside of New York or Boston or San Francisco, if you wanted to go to a bar, then your options for getting home were pretty fucking limited.  There's no mass transit in most places.  And outside of a major city center, good fucking luck getting a cab at 2:00 AM.  And let's just be honest--for much of the year walking even short distances in Minnesota could be fatal.

In the age of smartphones and Uber, I don't have a lot of sympathy for anyone who gets a DUI.  That's pretty fucking dumb.  But pre-2010?  Yeah--there but for the grace of God . . . .

He quit drinking after his DWI, which is laudable. But WTF with the Diet Mountain Dew?

Walz doesn’t drink alcohol or coffee. His beverage of choice is Diet Mountain Dew, lots of it. He got a DWI in Nebraska in 1995 before he quit drinking.

I didn’t say anything when Vance was getting mocked for it only because he made it so awkward, but diet mt dew is big all over the Midwest. Probably similar to Diet Coke in Texas.

@Ghost of LL oh I know, lived in south Austin in the early 2000s and made many questionable decisions driving to and from 6th because the cabs would never show up to pick us up and would refuse us on 6th (even kick us out) when we told them where we wanted to go home to at 230am.

"Ha ha ha ha! The potential VP nominee got arrested for DUI like 30 years ago!"

"The republican nominee is a 34 time convicted felon, is charged with 50 more, is a rapist, and owes half a billion for fraud."

"(waves it all away while shrugging and doing the jerking off hand motion)"

Not sure I like the anti-trunp republicans who are on the dems side advocating so hard for Shapiro.

I mean, I don’t give a shit who it is because I’m Team Coconuts, but to say not picking Shapiro would be Kamala’s first stumble of her campaign is a bit much.
