Track and volleyball coach killed by stray bullet while at rooftop patio at Smoke Skybar

SAN ANTONIO - Another deadly shooting downtown took the life of someone visiting San Antonio. It happened just after midnight Tuesday at the Smoke Skybar. Police are looking for a suspect and need your help.

“It’s very, very difficult to put this together without a witness or without some kind of video,” explained San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.

Chief McManus says his homicide detectives are working hard to find the person who pulled the trigger and killed 28-year-old Ayden Rose Burt. She was visiting from Jasper for a coaches’ conference. She was out with friends at a rooftop bar called Smoke Skybar on East Crockett near East Houston Street. She was sitting with her back to Interstate 37 when a stray bullet hit her in the back.

Burt was rushed to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

“She was struck by a single bullet in the back while she was seated outside on the patio. This appears that it may have come from the highway. Someone randomly shooting as they drove by,” said Chief McManus.

I-37 can be seen from the bar. Chief McManus is encouraging any witnesses who may have been driving on the highway around midnight, when the shooting happened, to come forward.

“We don’t have a known suspect vehicle at the moment,” said Chief McManus.

Ayden Burt was a high school volleyball and track coach for Jasper ISD. Superintendent John Seybold said in a statement, “Burt has been teaching in Jasper ISD since 2019, teaching English at both Jasper High School and the junior high.”

Seybold says Burt was a high school teacher, then taught at the junior high. She was going to return to the high school this school year as the girls’ volleyball and track coach. She was attending the THSCA training conference in San Antonio, along with other JISD staff.

Burt's family is from Jasper County. Her father was the junior high principal until this year when he retired. Her grandfather also served as the principal.

“Most of us watched her grow up,” said Seybold. "She was a wonderful teacher and person, and she loved her kids."

This video was posted by the Texas Hispanic Coaches Association just hours earlier to promote the event.

So is the working theory that somebody driving down I-37 just took a blind shot up at the elevated outdoor patio and this woman was simply hit by the bullet? Jesus.

Infuriating. You'd figure there would be multitudes of cameras on an interstate that close to the downtown of most cities. Correlate the time and search for a muzzle flash. Then hopefully identify a make and model and narrow from there.

I can only hope this sack of sewage spends severalal days in fear and crippling anxiety until they finally hear that jolting, authoritative knock on the door that immediately signals "definitely not Jehova's witness or the neighbor."

Probable road rage miss. It’s also a thing among SA youth to drive around at night and fire out of the window, became a bit of a social media trend. The police recently put out a warning that a particular group of teens was driving around shooting/killing pedestrians at random, and they haven’t been caught yet. But this shooting doesn’t fit that MO.

Tldr this city fucking sucks.

Correction: they usually get out of the car before shooting people. So it definitely wasn’t them probably

Actually, if you fire a gun with the intent to kill a particular person (person X), but miss and kill another person (person Y), you are absolutely guilty of murder.  Under the law of most states, "intent to kill" is the necessary element, NOT "intent to kill the specific person you killed."  Now, if you're just firing a gun recklessly, not aimed at anyone in particular/with no intent to actually shoot any person, then it's not murder.  So, we'll see what the facts of this case show, but if the shooter was trying to shoot person X and killed this coach instead, it's murder.

Whatever the case, I for one am glad how easy and unburdened we are with things like CHL requirements so that the Everyman can be armed at all times.

It's only ever solved problems

Oh....you'd think that, from the verbiage.  Walk around strapped....and be brown or black....and tell me how that works for you.  Well, I suspect your next of kin will tell us.  Now, whether you can carry anywhere, you can sure obtain anywhere.  Surprised we don't have gun vending machines in Texas yet.

We had a guy shoot out the 3rd floor window of our office building on 281 in Hollywood Park last year in broad daylight. Luckily that side of our floor is unoccupied or it would have killed someone too. Puro SA shit.

How do you know it was a guy?  This is Texas, a shitload of women are armed and deranged too!

Also even if you do not intend to kill anyone, you can still be prosecuted for murder, under the felony murder doctrine. Specifically, the deadly conduct by discharge of firearm felony would be used to actually make a murder charge under those facts.

new thread title accurately represents headlines and what happened.

Not sure i agree with your detective work. How many open homicide investigations would already conclude there was an intent to kill? In addition to the laws cited I’d say you jumped the gun.

Not this case, but 2 teens were arrested today for the killing of the 80 year old woman who was also hit by a stray bullet in downtown SA, two months ago. She was a passenger in a car leaving a graduation at the Alamodome and got caught in the crossfire of a shootout.
