Orange and White game tomorrow. Doesn't appear to be televised. In this game last year, Gaston went down with a 4 week long injury that I don't think she fully recovered from. If we can get out of this scrimmage injury free, that's a step in the right direction from last year

Maybe Rori should sit out, if Vic wasn't already planning on that.  No reason to risk injury for her

Did we revamp anything with our S&C approach after several recent seasons of injury bugs? Not sure what actually can be done, but I hope we're now taking every available precaution.

Same S&C staff is there.

Read we tied the men’s scrimmage squad, 64-64

Preston was impressive. Steals and hit threes. Booker was Booker - lethal jumper still. Codio hit some 3s and took a bunch of charges

Vic praised Preston ("Rori on steroids") because she has the speed to match up with quick guards, which was an issue last year with Shaylee.  She pushed the ball well and he mentioned speed and athleticism and decision making.

When you look back at last year it's actually incredible we made an elite 8 due to injuries.

Booker was the starting PG but she's a 3 or 4. Shaylee is more of a wing than guard. We essentially had 1 guard last year in Shaylee and she has average to below average athleticism.

Somehow Vic turned a roster with 1 guard (who is athletically limited) into an elite 8 team. I hope Vic can just figure out the injuries because I think he's an incredible coach. I'm not sure another coach in the country could have got last year's team to an elite 8.

Vic also mentioned in media recently that it’s still a coin flip whether Holle or Phelia starts as the third guard, but whoever doesn’t is likely an SEC 6th Player of the Year candidate

Harmon

Booker

Holle/Phelia

Moore

Jones

Second unit is Preston, Jak/Codio, Holle/Phelia, Carlton, Oldacre, most likely.

And you still have Lee and Boutilier, who finally got cleared this week

Legit 12 deep + Boutilier

Some Danny Davis tweets:

Quote

So, Rori Harmon doesn't look rusty. Rori's two quick jumpers, a crossover of Madison Booker, an assist and a forced turnover help Orange get out to a 10-7 lead with 5:09 left in this scrimmage's first quarter. #HookEm

Quote

Not hard to see why Vic Schaefer has been so high on Bryanna Preston. The freshman has looked good while both defending Rori Harmon and being defended by Rori Harmon. #HookEm

And one I didn't see until this morning and @perfectchaos007 is going to throw something

Quote

Texas trots out a lineup of Rori Harmon, Madison Booker, Shay Holle, Aaliyah Moore and Kyla Oldacre to start the second half against its practice players. Worth noting that Taylor Jones was injured in the first half and has not returned

Angry Office GIF

She took a hard fall and a hit to the jaw.  Came out with an ice pack and played a little bit more before the end of the 1st "half"

Doesn't sound serious.

Good to hear. Doesn’t appear as if the scrimmage Thursday against UTT will be televised either. I miss the LHN

Jones is probably the most important player on the team because our only potential weak spot is the 5 and she also has an injury history.

When Jones is healthy, we are really good. People will talk about guard play in the elite 8 but Jones not being fully healthy was just as big a contributor. She scored 11 points in 10 minutes and NCSU couldn't guard her at all. Even with our major guard disadvantage, I think we had a shot to beat NCSU if Jones could have given us 25+ minutes.

Texas is the only program with 2 players in CBS' Top 10 players

Booker #5
Harmon #9

Texas also faces #3 Aneesha Morrow, #4 Hannah Hidalgo, #6 Georgia Amoore and #10 MiLaysia Fulwiley

Also our first official game is a week later than most teams.  Several games every night next week for other teams, but Texas' first game is not until November 10.  Because of that, we started practice a week later than everyone, including USC, who we scrimmaged.

First date of practice is based on your first game date, so yeah, we got a delayed start.

This was what Danny Davis reported

The Longhorns participated in a closed-door scrimmage with USC two weekends ago, and UT head coach Vic Schaefer reported Phelia and freshman guard Bryanna Preston looked good against the third-ranked Trojans. Schaefer said it was evident that USC, which opens its season Nov. 4, had been practicing longer than Texas before adding that "we showed some competitive spirit. At the same time, I also think it showed we've got some things to address."

Our box score from the exhibition.

  • Still struggling a bit from the FT line
  • Taylor Jones led scoring, which should always be the case this season against undersized opponents. (please stay healthy)
  • Harmon played very efficiently in her 15 minutes
  • Preston played the most minutes today, and was pretty efficient.
  • Boutillier played a couple minutes, I assume the last two minutes of the 4th quarter, and scored a bucket.
  • Oldacre seems to be a reliable backup for Taylor Jones, and might a better FT shooter to boot.

11-18 is not great, but not bad.  Jones is not a strong FT shooter.  Booker should be better with the way she shoots. But game 0, not worried yet.

Jones + Oldacre may end up being better than we all thought.

Still not a great 3P% team, probably, but also I'm sure they were having some fun shooting 5 in the fourth Q.  Jak, Carlton, Graves, Moore each taking 1 - guessing those were not what Vic drew up or called lol.  Phelia didn't even take one and she shoots ~35% for her career.

Only 6 turnovers and the expanded box score said UTT had 0 points off those 6 turnovers.  Good.

Texas scored 47 points off 36 forced turnovers

Thanks for this, much appreciated.

Overmatched team, but still a lot to like here.

aggy lost to TAMUCC.  AT HOME

Oh Joni, you're time is about up.

First ever win against aggy (1-8)
First win over a P4 program since 2009, and only the fourth ever (twice in 2004-05, 2009)

This was just an incredibly bad hire.

She never even made the 2nd weekend at Georgia in 7 years. 2 tournament wins in what looks like 10 seasons after this year.

Must be out this game. Nice to see Carlton, Lee, Preston and Oldacre.

Glad we don’t have to deal with Audi Crooks this year.

Don’t really like seeing our big transfer already not active.
