Vic decided to stay big with Jones and Moore. We couldn't really guard them off the dribble but they also couldn't do anything with our size inside.

In the end it worked.

Moore came up big with 4 fouls and still scoring late.

Fantastic  games for Lee, Moore, Book and Jones. And Rori nailed both FTs to ice it

Looking over the stats,  was a close game. Same fg% of 50.0, same assist total, one fta difference.  They made 9 more 3s, we took 10 more shots because of rebound advantage.

I noted that Tenn shot 19 fts on just 10 Texas fouls, that seemed unusual.  Basically zero non shooting fouls.
conversely Texas shot 20 on 22 Tenn fouls.

I am disappointed they made 50% of their shots and 9 threes.  We held them under their average in points and threes made, as usual, but it will still too close for comfort.

We got a lot of really bad turnovers - was it 3 five second violations on an inbound? That's not like us.

They pressed us for 40 minutes and we did a halfway okay job of handling it - only 12 turnovers (9 outside of the three inbound violations).  Tenn's sub pattern is basically to sub in/out 5 players at a time to press like hell, sit for a bit, come back in, and press like hell.

Rebounding was the difference - +15 on the boards, +9 in offensive rebounds.  Outside of Moore, the rest of our rotation only had 6 fouls. (10 total)

4 players in double figures - Booker (26), Jones (21), Moore (11) and Lee (10).  Steady eddie Rori with 8 points, 8 assists, 4 boards.

Whitehorn and Spearman were really good for Tenn (21 and 14 points, respectively), but our interior game really shut down Hollingshead and our guards did a good job on Spear and Cooper.  Hollingshead in particular had a lot of trouble guarding Jones and got into foul trouble.

Yeah, we committed mostly shooting fouls.  Outside of a couple blocking fouls that could have been charges, basically no hand check fouls or offensive fouls for Texas.  Felt like it was allowed to be pretty physical - lots of no calls.

Second biggest crowd of the season so far at Moody - 7,530.  Had 8,113 for Arkansas.  But man, some of the road crowds we've faced: 9,149 at ND, 8,039 at OU, 18k at SoCar.  I expect Reed will be packed when we play aggy, but Texas will likely get some really good crowds for SoCar's return to Austin and also LSU.

Texas also took the air out of the ball - lots of possessions where we didn't take a shot until 5 seconds left on the shot clock, including passing up open shots early in the clock.  Vic had a strategy to slow this game down, not let Tennessee get out and run and hit transition 3s and limit possessions so Tennessee couldn't get into the 80s and 90s.

Dangerous strategy because I think we could have scored 90+ if we played straight up.  We also blew about 5 bunnies in the 4th Q that could have made this a 10 point game instead.

And those few minutes by Preston in Q2 really helped.

Rori has to stay on the floor, but she's not having to play 40 minutes anymore.  She's played 37 lol

Need to get Preston 10-15 min whenever possible in blowouts so that Rori can play the 37-40 min against SoCar, LSU, etc.

This team after just watching 98% of the games this year is a final four team, my biggest fear is we run into a team that plays a zone and we can’t shoot them out of it.
to add to that I think Vic is maximizing this teams potential and I do think this team has the capability to make a final four run, I just fear if we have to shoot to win

Cause I can’t say I do right now.

I will say our zone offense was nails against Maryland. Because Rori, Moore, Book and Lee can all hit those short corner jumpers. We didn’t need to bomb away from 3 because we probably have the best midrange game

Reminder:    LSU vs SCar,  today, 4PM, ESPN.     Could be a classic.

Madison returns to her home state vs Ole Miss on Sunday.   Will have 30 family/friends in attendance.

Quote

"The kid needs some grace. She's 19, and she's got a big old target on her back," Schaefer said. "But the kid ain't running from it. That's what I love about her."

This upcoming weekend, Booker will face a different kind of pressure. A Mississippi native, Booker will get to play in her home state for the first time when Texas travels to Ole Miss. Since Oxford is about a 2½-hour drive from her hometown of Ridgeland, Booker said that she'll have over 30 supporters at the game.

"I'm beyond excited," Booker said. "I kind of grew up watching Ole Miss and Mississippi State."

To make the final 4, we will likely have to beat USCe, UCLA, Notre Dame, or USCw in the elite 8. That is, if we stay on the 2 seed line.

Yes.  However, Texas will have ample opportunity to move into the 1 seed line if they can win over SoCar and LSU.

Vic said winning an SEC road game is like 1.5 wins.  Not a lot of teams are going to go to Norman and hold OU to 2-16 BTA and force 25 turnovers.

If not for the refs, Texas beats down OU by 15-20.

Sunday - Arkansas, the worst of the SEC, at 7-9 (0-1)
1/9 - Alabama, 14-1 (1-0)
1/12 - @ SoCar, 13-1 (1-0)
1/16 - @ Auburn, 9-5 (0-1)
1/20 - Maryland (neutral-ish), 11-3 (1-2)
1/23 - Tennessee, 13-0 (1-0)
1/26 - @ Ole Miss, 10-3 (1-0)
1/30 - Mizzou, 11-5 (0-1)

I'm really hoping for 6-2 in that stretch - it's tough.  NR, #19, #4, NR, #8, #15, #25, NR

5-1 so far. Great chance to meet the 6-2 line, good chance to exceed it.

Oldacre was abused last night by Tenn- she just haven't have the lateral quickness, which is something that Jones struggled with in previous season but was much better last night.  A good learning point for KO and the coaching staff.

Holle as well could not keep up with Tenn's guards.  Lee came in and did exactly what Holle couldn't do.  Teams with quick guards - we will need every bit of Rori and Lee and Preston to stay in front of them.

Again, Texas did great in keeping Spear and Cooper in check.  Whitehorn and Spearman just abused us, but Vic took some chances that letting 2 players beat us and not 4 would lead to a win.

You gotta credit the LV players who hit 3s above their average - Spearman 2-3 (only at 31% for the season), Latham 2-2 (26% for the season), Whitehorn 1-2 (28%).  Spear (38%) was 0-2.

Spearman especially was a player that we have struggled with, a stretch 4 who can hit the 3s.

I thought Mwenentanda's defensive radius and overall quickness were subtle factors in last night's win. I say that without even checking her stat line, but she did seem to complicate a bit of what TN was trying to do offensively. In a tight game, it doesn't take much from an unexpected source to make the difference.

Yep.  About fell out of my chair when Jones hit that long jumper to tie it at 68.  Haven't seen her hit one of those in a while.

Big contributions from Lee and Jak off the bench, and some really big buckets from Jones and Moore.  That steal by Booker on the inbounds under the basket and the layup on the other end about had me HYPE - she crushed it last night with her quickness in taking a turnover or missed shot all the way to the hoop.

This is a pretty big game thats being played at 5pm eastern/2pm pacific on a weekday. If LSU pulls this off, they have a good argument for a #1 ranking

You can thank weather for that. Both teams play Sunday/Monday too

you watching the game? If so is there a difference between these two teams in Texas you see??

Both teams shoot the 3 better than we do. I think they’re both way more physical on the boards than we are. We are tenacious but they both take it to a level about that. But I think our defense is more elite

The staff this year is doing a remarkable job with the rotations. The team is pretty deep with a number of players with different skillsets and the coaches are figuring out quickly who is effective this particular game and who is not. If our most experienced player isn’t getting it tonight but a freshman is, out she comes.

Looking at the teams in 1 seed contention and their big games left:

UCLA: Maryland, Minn, Ohio State, USC, Michigan State, USC

SoCar: Tennessee, Texas, UConn, Kentucky

USC: Minnesota, Ohio State, UCLA, Michigan State, UCLA

ND: Cal, NCST, Duke

Texas: SoCar, Kentucky, LSU

LSU: OU, Tennessee, Texas, Kentucky, Bama

UConn: Tennessee, SoCar

lots of opportunity for B1G/SEC chaos. ND looks in the clear. I wonder if UCLA goes 2-0 against SC, it could knock them out if Texas picks up a win against SoCar and LSU

Texas picking up back to back Q1 wins this week likely has them #5 and ready to move up if someone above them falters
