Closest Vandy got in the 2nd half was 5 I believe

Texas wins 87-66 over #24 Vandy

Bring on the Gamecocks. What Super Bowl? Biggest game on Sunday is at Moody

I wonder if our focus tonight getting 3 point looks is the new norm going forward with A-Mo out. It's likely the right decision to have a diversified offense with our depth issues.

Booker and Lee need to shoot it more from 3

Booker is quite efficient in her BTA shots.

We ran that 4 guard lineup with Rori, Booker, Lee and Harmon a lot. We went to it fast. And when Rori went off, we ran it with Preston.

Here’s hoping we play it a lot against SoCar. It’s working

Is it? Holle has been getting wide open 3s all year. She’s making them now. I think that’s the only difference.

So when did Vic add Rori's sister to the roster?

Lol a lineup with 2 Roris would be a defensive nightmare for opposing teams.

The one thing I don’t like is that Rori’s stats have dropped off quite a bit as her minutes have decreased from 2021/22 and 2022/23

Her rebounds are down, her points are down, but her steals are up, turnovers annd fouls are down and FG% is up. And maybe my favorite thing - her FT% is 79.4%. Her best season before this was 73.3%

I do think this is Vic’s best FT shooting team, mostly due to the huge leaps by Rori and Jones (76%)

OH and Crème moved us up to a 1 in his end of week update (in Spokane, but still) - it’s 6 teams for 4 spots he says. UConn is out of the running due to only 3 Q1 wins and only 1 more on the schedule.

Its UCLA, SoCar, ND, Texas, USC and LSU playing for the 1 seeds

Texas has an 8-2 Q1 record after the Vandy win

We still have 4 more Q1 games (SoCar, at UK, LSU, at MSST)

Aggy is on the cusp of becoming a Q1 win (NET 76)

Tough since we’ve lost to nd and sccar, and ucla is undefeated.  Need to win 2 of next 3 to be in good position to have a head to head with lsu or a split with scar, or both.

USC has games left against Ohio State, UCLA, Michigan State, and UCLA again.

It’s Texas/USC for that last spot. Need USC to go 0-2 vs UCLA and Texas to go 2-1 vs SoCar, LSU, UK

ND does have Cal, Duke, NCST and FSU though. But it does feel like it’s us and the Trojans.

I don’t mind it. She looked better last night and more aggressive on defense.  Vic developing more trust in Preston which I think will pay dividends

If we can shoot like we did last night this changes everything imo.
Hopefully Hollie is coming out of her slump, cause she looked good last night

5 steals last night. 3 when she came back in in the 4th Q.

It is about time she didn’t have to play 38 minutes. Preston did well, just needs to not try to go 0 to 60 on a rebound or turnover lol. She turned it over 2 or 3 times herself doing that

Concerned about Carlton. Really in Vic's doghouse at this point.
I understand trying to motivate her, and we are winning (with the 4 guard line-up), but were are thin at forward and it will get worse next year.

That's a lot of talent to lose, I hope she is invested.

If he can’t motivate her, she isn’t a fit here. Maybe she needs a full offseason, but at this point, she’s behind Moore and Jak and even the 4 guard lineup with Book at the 4.

TBD - Oldacre and Boutilier, who I doubt is ever playing, and then Jak, carlton, Moore (if she opts to come back)

Oldacre has a sister too? Noice.

I would think the Abbie experiment is over, and I just can't see Moore keep trying to play. Vic talks about her struggles.

That leaves Jak and Kyla?

Yeah, and Carlton if she returns. PF/C is the most important position in the portal for us

No, she’s basically a chronic foot/leg injury by just existing. I think Vic took her as a project, but she ain’t gonna be Ayoka Lee.

She actually took part in pregame warmups last night, which is the first time I recall that happening this season.

I just don't get those numbers. Winning in Lexington will be just as tough as beating SC at home, LSU is 60% at best and Westlake HS isn't 99%.

The other UT proved how tough the SEC is last night. No game in the SEC is a gimmie. And speaking of Carlton, she could be effective in non-conf against lesser talent, but the SEC is a whole different ballgame. I'm seeing too much loafing. If Vic can't motivate her I'm not sure who can, or maybe she's pissed for not getting more PT and has checked out. Just sure hope she get's it together.

And that's just speculation, which is what this board is for. I don't think anyone here has any inside info.

This. Vic has called it “intensity level” but that’s the issue with her rn

Also not sure if anyone else noticed, but Preston and Lee have good chemistry.  Laughing together on the sidelines, dancing together in the 4th Q when Texas was closing it out.  Dynamic duo there.

Note to SoCar and LSU - Texas is 44-5 all time at Moody

3 of those losses were the 2022-23 season (USF with Rori coming back from her toe injury, Baylor and Louisville) and 2 were last year without Rori

Here is Massey:

SoCar - 42%
UK - 80%
LSU - 69%
Georgia - 93%
MSST - 78%
Florida - 94%

Jesus Christ, get us out of the PAC NW!

Let’s face it, Texas has to be the #1 or #2 overall seed to get a favorable regional. I bet we wouldn’t even get FW next year if we were a 1 seed lol. Keep sneaking in as the last #1 seed, you get what you get.

Update on Phelia from 247. Noting is really mentioned about coming back to Texas next season, but I assume that's the plan. Get Chavez and at least one good big from the portal and this team really might win it all in 2025-26.

Sources: Michigan transfer guard Laila Phelia needs eye surgery and will seek medical redshirt this season

Spoiler

AUSTIN, Texas — Laila Phelia, who transferred to Texas from Michigan as a first-team All-Big Ten guard, will seek a medical redshirt this season because she needs eye  surgery, sources told Horns247.

Phelia, a 6-foot senior, was expected to be the Longhorns' starting shooting guard this season after averaging 16.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals in 35 minutes per game as a junior last year at Michigan, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors.

Phelia had surgery over the summer to repair a detached retina in her right eye and now needs another surgery, sources told Horns247. Phelia played in only eight games for Texas this season, averaging 6.1 points and 2.1 rebounds with eight assists and nine steals in 19.4 minutes per game.

Fourth-ranked Texas (23-2, 9-1 SEC) will have its second regular-season showdown with No. 2 South Carolina (22-1, 10-0), at Moody Center on Sunday at 1 pm CT (on ESPN). South Carolina whipped the Longhorns 67-50 on Jan. 12 in Columbia, S.C.

After a knee injury ended point guard Rori Harmon's season nine games into last year's schedule, Schaefer is dealing with it again as Phelia seeks a medical redshirt in preparation for another eye surgery.

"We have lost a starter again," Schaefer said Friday, referring to Phelia. "After last year, we had it happen again this year, and we still find a way to win."

Texas lost fifth-year senior guard Shaylee Gonzales following last season, and Schaefer brought in Phelia to replace her, because Phelia is a physical, three-level scorer who is as comfortable driving to the glass as she is pulling up for a jumper.

While Gonzales averaged 9.4 points on 41.4% shooting, 3.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals last season for Texas, she only shot 28 free throws (hitting 22, 78.6%). Phelia, meanwhile, averaged 16.8 points on 42.3% shooting, 3.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game last season at Michigan while attempting 161 free throws (hitting 129, 80.1%).

Phelia's physical, attacking mindset is something Schaefer was excited to add to the floor instead of relying so much on 3-point shooting, which Texas has struggled with this season.

Last year, Texas averaged 36.5% shooting from 3-point range, and this year the Longhorns are hitting just 32.0% from 3.

Sophomore All-American Madison Booker, who is shooting 48.8% from 3 (20-of-41), and freshman Jordan Lee, who is shooting 46.8% from 3 (29-of-62), are the only Longhorns shooting above 30% from beyond the arc. Senior Shay Holle, who hit 38.3% (70-of-183) of her 3s the last two seasons, is hitting just 29.4% (25-of-85, 29.4%) from 3 this season, and point guard Rori Harmon (5-of-24, 20.8%) is also struggling from 3 this season.

Here's what Schaefer said about Phelia when she signed with Texas last April:

"She is an outstanding young lady who brings a veteran presence to our team. She is a proven scorer in the Big Ten and will add not only another offensive dimension to our team, but will bring toughness and a competitive spirit as well. She's a winner."

Last season at Michigan, Phelia started all 33 games she played in, racking up one 30-point game and 12 20-point games while scoring in double figures 29 times.

Schaefer definitely could've used Phelia's experience, toughness and attack-the-basket mentality against a team like South Carolina.

In Texas' 67-50 loss at South Carolina on Jan. 12, the Longhorns shot just 27.8% (22-of-79) while attempting only 10 free throws, hitting only five (50%), showing a lack of aggressiveness.

I'm becoming less concerned about the 4 because Vic has realized going smaller is better.

Right now the 3 guard lineup with Booker at the 4 and any lineup with Jak at the 4 is better than the minutes we are getting from Carlton. I don't think she's even in the doghouse. We are just better with Booker and Jak at the 4 and that doesn't even include Moore.
