Well I guarantee Lisa Mattingly (head of refs for Women’s basketball for the SEC) was getting a phone call after this game regardless of the outcome. Hell, she might be at the game now.

Do you feel like elaborating on this post?

I think part of the shooting struggles was in big part to both Rori and Booker working their asses off on the defensive end.

We pretty much kept their guards out of the paint for 3/4 the game. But that takes a lot of energy on 1 end of the court.

Pollsters have always had a recency bias. If they were relevant in any other sport they would know that

Also doesn’t matter. If the committee put out their rankings today, we’d be a spot or two behind SoCar.

Kentucky is an elite shot blocking team. Jones and KO will have to be very strong

I think Amoore is going to be in hell with Rori and Preston on her. She won’t be able to just blow by her defender

Watched her against OU.  She's pretty dang slippery and cagey.  But she threw up a lot of crazy stuff that went in to get her 40.

Nah. Texas has to take care of business. Every team is going to be motivated against us with the #3 ranking on our back

We want the other teams tied in the loss column with us to lose. Every loss by them helps us if we take care of business

UK had an easy schedule and are now running into their tougher potion -

Had MSST, Vandy, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, aggy, arky, Bama, OU

Now have OM, Texas, Georgia, Missouri, LSU, Tenn, SoCar

Easy front loaded schedule with 1 top ranked in the top 5 of the SEC. The back end is gonna be an awakening

Vic's biggest task this week is playing sports psychologist. If his team watched this game together tonight, its human nature to feel a bit complacent and over confident.

No doubt Vic is telling them if you don’t come ready on the road, you will lose. Doesn’t matter how favored you are

I am sad to report that OU pulled it out by 2

OU got a bailout foul under the basket to shoot 2 FTs to take a 2 point lead with about 4 seconds left

14/22 FT for Auburn was the killer, but Gaston went for 25 and 5

OU is not as good as previously thought this year. Are coaches catching on how to defend OU's style of offense?

Something ain't right in Norman - you return basically your entire roster + one of the most coveted transfers in Reagan Beers + two top 70 HS players and you're sitting at 18-6 (6-5) and 7th in the SEC

The SEC is a lot tougher than the Big 12, but you have to play defense in this league or you're cooked.  LSU, Texas, SoCar - elite defense teams - all tied for 1st.  Tenn and OU - finesse teams who want to just outscore and play no defense - 7th and 9th.

I don't think Jennie's brand of ball is going to work in the SEC.  I think any elite defensive team is going to continue to game plan and recruit players who can easily stop OU's offense.  OU is 4th in the SEC in scoring at 78.6 ppg, but 13th in defense at 77.9 ppg allowed.   Tennessee is 1st in the SEC in scoring at 80.5 ppg, but 12th in defense at 76.4 ppg allowed.  The margin is slim

Flip side -

SoCar - 78.8 ppg scoring, 57.3 ppg allowed
Texas - 73.8 ppg scoring, 60.5 ppg allowed
LSU - 80.4 ppg scoring, 70.5 ppg allowed

And this is not a good defense by Kim's standards - 64 to a bad Arky team, 87 to Tenn, 77 to Vanderbilt, 63 to a bad Florida team, 100 to OU, 77 to Tenn, 67 to Miss St.  Will be interesting to see if LSU's offense can outscore Texas/Ole Miss, who play really good defense.

Crème:

As the SEC turns, so does the national bracketology picture. Sunday featured a matchup of projected No. 1 seeds (South Carolina and Texas) and another game between a team (LSU) trying to get to the No. 1 line against an opponent (Tennessee) fresh off a win over UConn and fighting for a spot in the coveted top 16. Then on Monday, Ole Miss beat Kentucky in a meeting of teams also in contention for the top 16. The SEC currently has eight squads in the top 18 of the S-curve (and Alabama is only a No. 6 seed because it had to be moved down to accommodate bracketing principles). No other league's final two weeks of the regular season and conference tournament will have as much influence on what happens on Selection Sunday. Despite losing to Texas, South Carolina maintains No. 1 overall (remember, the Gamecocks beat the Longhorns by 17 less than a month ago), but the Horns have a firmer hold on a top seed. Ole Miss got a crucial win over Kentucky but still isn't in the top 16. It's probable that six SEC teams (and possibly as many as seven) will be hosting NCAA tournament games.

What does that mean?

You can’t meet a conference foe earlier than the sweet 16, so if there’s too many teams in your conference that are hosting, someone has to get bumped out of the top 16 to ensure no conference matchups in the 1st/2nd round

From Brian Davis

ESPN announced that Super Bowl Sunday’s game between South Carolina-Texas women drew 1 million viewers. Most watched women’s game of the year so far. Peaked at 1.3 million.

One named Alliyah Chavez no doubt. Great recruiting tool for any prospect considering Texas. Packed house, very exciting game, big win. The move to the SEC appears to be a solid move to advance our WBB program.

Might want to revisit that rule in the age of 16-20 team conferences.

Creme also has Michigan in USC's regional.  Which isn't supposed to happen... But 3 of the 4 10-seeds are also B1G teams, so.....

He has 6 of 10 SEC teams hosting (SoCar, Texas, Tennessee, OU, LSU, Kentucky).  Alabama is a 6, because they can't be a 5 in his bracket, because 75% of the 4 seeds are SEC teams and Ole Miss already has the 5 seed in NCST's regional.

That rule may have to be rescinded or heavily altered in some fashion.  Or, knowing the NCAA, the tournament will just expand and they won't have to worry about it anymore.

Also, personally, I believe if Texas goes 1-1 in the next 2 games, and finishes the season without another loss, we cemented a 1 seed, regardless of the SECT (and we'd have a double bye anyhow).

NET would probably like a road win over UK more than a home win over LSU, but either/or, a team with at least 10 Q1 wins, is a 1 seed.

SoCar - 10-2
UConn - 3-3 (and why they aren't in 1-seed contention anymore)
Texas - 9-2
ND - 6-2
UCLA - 7-0
USC - 6-2
LSU - 5-1

Vic Schaefer shares heartfelt appreciation for Longhorns’ explosive attendance and incredible ESPN TV ratings

Spoiler

Texas women’s coach Vic Schaefer was chatting with reporters Tuesday about the upcoming clash with No. 8 Kentucky when he stopped mid-thought and pivoted back to wins over Vanderbilt and South Carolina.

“I want to thank our fans,” Schaefer said unprompted.

“Obviously, we had great crowds last week. And you know, I look across the country y’all, and I don’t see that just everywhere. I turned on the TV last night and looked at an arena that was pretty much empty. You know, I just really want to thank our fans.”

Schaefer was simply overjoyed at the fan turnout in wins over No. 24 Vanderbilt and No. 2 South Carolina.

The Horns announced that 7,049 fans turned out last Thursday to witness a 87-66 win over the Commodores. Fans sold out Moody Center on Super Bowl Sunday — a crowd of 10,517 — as No. 4 Texas rolled to a 66-62 win and snapped the Gamecocks’ 57-game winning streak in SEC play.

t was the third time the Texas women have announced a sellout since moving into the Moody Center in November 2022. Dawn Staley probably wasn’t surprised. The legendary South Carolina coach said afterward that women’s basketball is “It” right now.

ESPN also announced Tuesday that one million people watched the game on its platforms, with the audience peaking at 1.3 million. It’s the most-watched women’s basketball game on ESPN this season.

Texas plays at Kentucky on Thursday, but another full house is expected Sunday when UT hosts No. 5 LSU and coach Kim Mulkey.

“Part of building a program, as I told you a long time ago, is your fan base,” Schaefer said. “You know, I think we had some apathy here when we took the job. Obviously, we’re in a different arena, much bigger place, but part of building a program is not just your X’s and O’s. It's not your wins and losses. It's building your fan base.”

Nationally, South Carolina leads the nation in average attendance at 16,916 fans per game. Iowa is second, averaging 14,998 fans each night, powered in part by the incredible popularity of Caitlin Clark during her college days. Texas currency ranks 11th nationally as the Horns are averaging 7,157 fans per night.

Before Schaefer arrived, the Longhorns ranked 30th nationally during the 2019-20 season. That season, UT averaged 3,638 fans for home games.

“What we’ve been able to do in a really short period of time here, I'm really proud of,” the coach added. “Our kids deserve a lot of the credit because of the style of play they play. They're fun to watch. Our fans really enjoy them.”

National media outlets have noticed, too. Madison Booker was featured during a halftime interview of ESPN’s Monday night women’s SEC broadcast.

Other SEC coaches are noticing the Horns’ play. Booker was also named the SEC player of the week after putting up 20 points and 11 rebounds against the Gamecocks, the current SEC standard bearer.

“Madison Booker, Rory Harmon, the rest of my team, they're signing the same autographs, taking the same picture with the same person after every game,” Schaefer said. “But you know what? That’s OK. If that’s what it takes to build a fan base, we’re going to do it.

“There’s people up in the stands, there’s little old ladies up there that got a dozen cookies. They think those are their girls, not mine,” he continued. “They don’t think they’re Texas’ team. They think they’re their team. And that’s OK, and that’s really what you want. You want to build that atmosphere of ownership.”

Schaefer is grateful for the fan turnout, but he’ll always welcome more. As the coach might say, these SEC games only get bigger, y’all.

“So, really want to say thank you to our community and our fan base,” Schaefer said. “Again, our kids appreciate it. I appreciate it.”

I wonder how long he’ll coach. 63 isn’t that old for a head coach, but I have no inside information regarding his desire or overall health. Regardless, I hope the man wins a title (as a HC) before he’s done. He’s one hell of a coach.

SEC play

15.6 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 0.7 bpg, 1.5 spg

85.7% FT

Averaging 32.7 mpg

She needs to go on a tear here to win SEC POY, but right now, probably Amoore's to lose - averaging 25.4 ppg playing 37.2 mpg, shooting 47% from the field, 37% from three and 82% from the line

As of right now, my guess would be:

POY - Amoore
FOY - Blakes (duh)
DPOY - Clara Strack or Sania Feagin
COY - Shea Ralph or Kenny Brooks, but if we finish 15-1 in SEC play, Vic could get it
