I am disappointed they made 50% of their shots and 9 threes.  We held them under their average in points and threes made, as usual, but it will still too close for comfort.

We got a lot of really bad turnovers - was it 3 five second violations on an inbound? That's not like us.

They pressed us for 40 minutes and we did a halfway okay job of handling it - only 12 turnovers (9 outside of the three inbound violations).  Tenn's sub pattern is basically to sub in/out 5 players at a time to press like hell, sit for a bit, come back in, and press like hell.

Rebounding was the difference - +15 on the boards, +9 in offensive rebounds.  Outside of Moore, the rest of our rotation only had 6 fouls. (10 total)

4 players in double figures - Booker (26), Jones (21), Moore (11) and Lee (10).  Steady eddie Rori with 8 points, 8 assists, 4 boards.

Whitehorn and Spearman were really good for Tenn (21 and 14 points, respectively), but our interior game really shut down Hollingshead and our guards did a good job on Spear and Cooper.  Hollingshead in particular had a lot of trouble guarding Jones and got into foul trouble.

Tennesse is 10th now in the SEC and after the loss Thursday they will probably drop from being #17, but even so they feel wildly underrated. That’s a team I never want to see again this year.

They good.

Moore was a defensive liability that game - too many fouls.  I think the 4 guard lineup with Jak and Lee will present better defensive matchups with Tenn, especially closing out on shooters and running them off the 3 point line.

More Preston too, especially if they're going to press for 40 minutes.

TCU, Monday, 6pm - for the Final Four

I think Lee or Preston need or start over Holle. She’s really struggling to keep guards in front of her. Though she might have more success against Madison Connor. Rori better be ready to hound HVL for 40 minutes

Or Vic needs to sub Preston in to handle HVL. She’s quick enough to make HVL’s life miserable.

Vic's postgame press conf.   Time stamped when he addresses facing Van Lith after Louisville last year and portal recruiting. (18:44)

"Most important recruits you got are the ones in your locker room"    Entire vid worth a view.  Heaps praise on the freshmen.

A lot of coaches seem to a) hate the portal timing that screws teams on deep runs, forcing them to recruit AND gameplan simultaneously and b) dislike the 2 regional format

That seems to be the consensus between Vic, Geno, Dawn and Mulkey. They aren’t wrong. It’s ridiculous.

Yeah, I remember when they mentioned the 2 regional format a few years ago. It was their answer to have the most optimal attendance at games.

They even briefly talked about combining women’s regionals with men’s regionals, but that was quickly shut down. There was also talk of taking the first 2 rounds off campus and back to neutral sites, and that was also shut down.

That wouldn’t be terrible?

Don’t love them this year, but UCLA would be in Sacramento, SoCar would be in Atlanta, Texas in Indy and USC in Newark. Play the women’s game on the days after the men play

Shame, I would love to have her here.

Audi not only seemed like a 5 star player, but a 5 star human being as well. Great young lady.

If you are going to only have 2 regional sites, you shouldn’t have them be coastal or you should blatantly fuck with the seedlings/selections so that teams don’t have to travel across the country.  It’s bullshit for UConn and whoever else had a similar issue. And also have a second gym for practices somewhere. Plenty of courts around.

  • Hook 'Em 1

Practicing in a 2nd gym isn’t the issue. The issue is you want as many practice shots on a court you’ve never played on before at the neutral site, and everyone has to have equal time on the court. Plus, there are rules about when the court has to be free, etc. on the day of a game.

Practicing at a local high school isn’t going to do much

Blair and Elena are both following Louisville PF Nyla Harris

The 6-foot-2 forward played in every one of Louisville's 33 games this season and started all but one, but regressed some following a standout sophomore season. She averaged 8.6 rebounds and 5.3 rebounds per game and shot 54.0 percent from the floor, but totaled just 11 points and 11 rebounds over the Cardinals' four postseason games.

This came after the Orlando, Fla. native took a massive step forward during the 2023-24 season. Starting all 34 games that year, she averaged 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 56.3 percent from the field. As a true freshman, she helped UofL orchestrate a second half turnaround after being inserted into the starting lineup, averaging 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds in 38 games and 15 starts.

TCU has played 3 postseason games, like us

Against FDU, their starters played 28, 25, 32, 28, 36
Against Louisville, their starters played 40, 39, 37, 38, 40 (in a 15 point win)
Against ND, their starters played 38, 33, 38, 37, 39

They are not deep.  Texas needs to go full court for 40 min, wear them out, get them in foul trouble

Harmon/Preston have to hound the shit out of HVL and make it hell for her
Holle and Lee will need to contain Madison Connor, who is shooting 46% from deep.  Run her off the line and don't ever lose her

Texas in those same 3 games:

W&M 27, 20, 23, 26, 28 minutes
Illinois 35, 24, 24, 34, 29
Tennessee 33, 31, 21, 37, 8

The most minutes a Texas starter has played in 37 minutes (Rori) against Tennessee.  Texas has only had 5 starters play more than 30 minutes so far in the tournament.

TCU has had 11 starters play more than 30 minutes.

They also start 4 guards + Prince, so I expect Texas to go Harmon, Lee, Holle, Booker, Jones to start this one.  Preston off the bench is the instant spark with fresh legs and speed for days - have fun with that, TCU.  And 6'6 Oldacre comes in, as well as 6'2 Jak who is all length with those arms.

This is helpful.

Not knowing anything about TCU, I was concerned about a Tennessee hangover effect from 40 minutes of full court action.

Will be interesting to see how our jumpers look between tipoff and the first TV timeout

Just because I am tired of hearing about Vic's offense - Texas scored 67 in the Sweet 16

That was more or as many points scored as half the field.

Duke (47)
UNC (38)
Ole Miss (62)
ND (62)
OU (59)
KSU (61)
USC (67)
Maryland (67)

And within a bucket or two of 2 other teams - SoCar (71) and TCU (71)

I think Texas will be very glad they that a) they aren't going to get pressed for 40 minutes and b) would have to keep surviving hockey style subs of 5 rested players

You have to add in that Lee played 33 min and Preston 28, but Oldacre only played 9.  Oldacre and Holle should be pretty rested.

Tennessee did not have a single player log more than 24 minutes.  Every starter logged between 21 and 24 minutes and 5 of their bench players logged between 14 and 19 minutes.

TCU does not have that luxury to keep putting in fresh legs every stoppage of play.
