This makes me so mad, because it's so fucking good and it's so easy to imagine an Allred version of this for his Senate campaign that will absolutely never get made.

If nothing else this thread is a strong endorsement for moving to Minnesota.

If it weren’t for the winters…

Here's hoping global warming makes them more tolerable. With our luck as a species though, it will probably make them even worse.

All Hail Climate Change!

It's official: Minnesota just wrapped the warmest meteorological winter on record for 2023-2024

Enough with the weird.  Enough with the mean.  Enough with prizing and rewarding HURTING people.  It's time to make the turn towards "making helping people great again."

Agree. AFTER we win the election.  You of all people know that a message like the above will not make any inroads into winning in November. Beat the GOP to a pulp, THEN focus on turning a new leaf in American politics.

Yes and now.  Beating the GOP to a pulp is what we need to DO...but it's not the message that seems to be resonating right now.  The message that is connecting with and motivating a good number of previously unmotivated voters is along the lines of "man....aren't y'all sick of all this bullshit [gesturing to insane Trumpist hate and venom all around us]?"  Turning the page on this shittacular chapter is on a lot of people's minds.  Will it work and win the election?  We'll see.  This is a gut-check moment for the Republic, our society, and our American culture.  And yes...we need to beat the GQP senseless, using the tools that work.  Laughing at them, calling them weird, and reminding people that the GQP's relentless assholery with no solutions/ideas that actually make anything better for anyone but billionaires seems to be a viable tool set.  Let's use it.

...and the winter before had the second-most snow ever recorded. Even if you include the Fort Snelling pioneer records. It started snowing in mid-November and that shit didn't stop until April.

This month will mark my 40th year in Texas. Transplanted from MN when my dad's job relocated to Austin in '84. My wife has lived her entire life in TX. We are definitely getting out of here as soon as we retire, and although the PNW and CO have been tops on the destination list, she's sending me more & more articles about the quality of life for retirees in MN. It's definitely moving back up the charts. Plus, I can still speak & translate Minnesotan fluently to help her adapt.

Don't worry about the cold so much. But stock up on frigging bug spray because the mosquitoes & biting insects will eat your ass June-August.

I love this quote and I think it would really resonate on the campaign trail with Walz as VP.

At this point I want Walz for VP simply for the chance to listen to his spokespeople with ding-dang ding-dang Minnesooota accents.

Walz is the Democratic Party Rosetta Stone to talk to rural whites who are currently voting against their own self-interests. If we are ever going to head off the threat to democracy, we are going to need to peel off some of them. Walz can reach them, because he is them.

If he isn't the VP, he needs to be in a major public facing role. Either way, he needs to be on Fox as often as those stupid bastards will put him on.

He hasn't reached his own rural white constituents.  They hate his guts.

I like Walz a lot.  Would love to have him as a governor.  But I don't think he's really reaching rural whites based on the Minnesota voting map.

In the context of a national election, "reaching rural whites" for Dems means losing rural counties like 65/35 or 70/30 instead of 80/20 or worse.

Would you say that's true for Beshear as well in KY?

I'd say that's true. But being reported it's down to Walz and Shapiro.

I was just wondering about his success in general of winning a red state.

Gotcha.  I think he could do that.

I'm probably still team Kelly, but love a lot about Walz.  I think the most effective attack against him will come in the form of the Minneapolis riots, but that falls far more on the mayor than it does Walz, who actually called in the National Guard to get shit under control.

The Minneapolis riots may be tried to use as a cudgel, but Walz had the Guard called up as soon as state law allowed him. Unfortunately, city management had to ask first, and by the time they did shit had gone totally sideways.

Speaking of the Minnesota Guard, someone tried to Swift Boat him in the deep stretch of his 2018 campaign, by falsely accusing him of rank embellishment. The Guard rather quickly put a halt to this attempt.

Unfortunately, this is the case. MN-1, the USHoR district he won in the 2006 blue wave, has gotten really, really Trumpy. I know several farmers who are in that district, and to a man they think he's a liburrl poser.

Then again, most of them also think that the tax dollars subsidize the city slickers. The reverse is actually true.

I don't pretend to follow MN politics, and didn't even know who the guy was two months ago. But he must be doing something right as he beat the GOP incumbent in a district where that incumbent won the previous two  elections by 25 pts. And he held that seat for 5 subsequent elections until he assumed the governorship, at which point the seat flipped right back to the GOP (53%R,42% D in latest election).

There is a good chunk of this country that viscerally hates anybody with a D by their name, and thats not gonna change. So a lot of the voters in his district would never vote Dem. But you cant argue with his success in peeling away enough of those voters to win and hold a seat that had previously been comfortably GOP.

Part of that was the mood of the time.  As late as 2018 the Democrats (when Walz was first elected) were still getting a lot of votes in southern Minnesota (and northern Iowa as well).  I live right next door and I've seen a larger number (and just generally higher intensity) of Trump displays in Minnesota (a state that Harris will win fairly comfortably) than I do in Iowa (a state that Trump will win fairly comfortably) and it has a lot to do with the persecution complex that's just rampant in any rural area that shares a state with a major city.  Following the 2018 election, even Iowa had 3/4 US House districts represented by a Democrat, which seems unfathomable two election cycles later.

Social media broke the brains of a large portion of rural Americans who were actual swing voters as recent as a 6 years ago.  I don't know if there's a way to get them back.

That video is supposed to be about extremism? I think he pretty plainly lays out it's none of your fucking business and if you think it is you are a piece of shit who's imposing your ideology on marginalized people.

To the MAGAts, standing against imposing your will on the marginalized IS extremism.
A platform of “don’t be a dick and leave people the fuck alone” is extremism to them.
Walz is and has been right: they’re fucking weird.

They're admitting they are weak ass parents and need the state's help lest some random book, classmate or Olympics opening ceremony act all of a sudden turns their kid gay or trans and they as the parents just couldn't do anything about it.

100%. The MAGAts are repeatedly and openly admitting that they are incapable of parenting their own kids. Sounds to me like they should stop having kids they can’t raise.

What's crazy to me is, growing up in the 80s/90s in Texas, the vibe I always got from older conservatives I knew was "leave people alone, mind your own fucking business". Maybe I'm way off but that's the impression that I got. Or maybe it's just a Texas thing.

Now the right has to cry and complain and get in everyone's fucking business about everything. It's infuriating.

That is definitely a Texas thing.

Texas politics were mostly different from national politics until hot wheels decided to gargle the fucking orange mans nuts and turned into an authoritarian shithead.

Rick Perry was a doofus and GWB was too, but they at least didn't fuck everything up. Nothing but bad shit has happened under Abbott and somehow the fucker got reelected.

All those old Texan Republican’s in the 80’s were this guy. All the 2010-now Texas republicans are “Ted”
