2024 Fall Camp Thread - Bubble Wrap ALL THE RB

Baxter was never a killer inside the tackles.  He went down with a breath of wind all last year.   Try not to panic.  Pass first and then gut the defense with draws from Blue and the other dudes.   Hope Wingo is as dangerous as advertised.   If so we will go deep into the playoffs.

You'll still probably get the 5th string guys like Red hitting the road, unless they're Max Merrill types that just want a degree.

I wish we still had Red. Then we'd have five scholarship RBs.

Who is the Ramonce Taylor of this WR corp?  He lined up as a back and played both very well before the backpack incident.  That would be our answer.  Not saying RT ran between tackles much, but if we have a guy like that in the WR depths, we should be fine with Blue, Gibson, TW and then spreading some carries to an athlete or two.

If we were moving a WR, my first thought would be Bolden. He had 21 career carries at Oregon State. But I don't think we're moving a WR for reasons that have already been discussed here.

Also, just for reference, here are the RB carries and distribution in Sark's time here.

2023: 444 RB carries (31.7 per game)

  • Brooks 187, Baxter 138, Blue 65, Red 30, Robinson 12, Wisner 12

2022: 421 RB carries (32.4 per game)

  • Robinson 258, Johnson 93, Brooks 30, Robinson 25, Blue 15

2021: 367 RB carries (31.6 per game)

  • Robinson 195, Johnson 96, Robinson 45, Brooks 21, Watson 10

Average: 410.7 carries (31.6 per game)

  • RB1 19.4 carries per game, RB2 8.8 per game, RB3 4.4 carries per game
    • These are injury adjusted numbers (2021 Bijan had his carries across 10 games). Player carries per game do not add up to team carries per game for that reason.

My takeaways: rushing attempts per game has been consistent over Sark's tenure. In a perfect world, we're looking at something like Blue 18 carries per game, Wisner 10, Gibson 4. We don't live in a perfect world though and the situation is more grim than I thought prior to doing this math. We can still overcome it with some injury luck, but we'll likely be counting on Gullette/Page/whoever to give us a minimum of 40 carries this year. Probably more like 60 and it could go over 100 if our top three guys miss more than a couple games. Especially if we have a 16 game season.

Two subpackage/scheme things to watch: 1) Wildcat. Roschon and Red probably ran that 25+ times per year. I imagine that's probably dead now given that it's success was declining and we now don't have the body type for it. 2) Sark's use of motion. People like to call it the Keilan role, but it's flexible. It's just whichever athlete Sark has on the field that he can move around to get certain reads or calls from the defense. Keilan was the primary guy for it in 21/22 and Sark ran him with it more. Last year the improved WR core ate up his play time and the carries given to whoever was motioning declined, which was more in-line with what he did at Bama. I'd expect that to continue this year.

What I hate the most about these RB injuries is that it will only further encourage Sark to be pass first.

We lost the Washington game because he wouldn’t stick with the run. We need to be a run-first offense.

And maybe y’all all have the confidence in Ewers to run a pass-first offense. I don’t. Too much inconsistency, too many poor decisions, and stretches of looking like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Experience matters but Red seemed like he was unhappy with his role based on that sideline outburst he had in one of the games last year. Red’s exit paves the way for younger guys like Jerrick Gibson to make their mark at Texas, especially after training with Bijan during the off-season.

Look how ripped he is, it looks like AI. And he’s our 3rd string RB. We may be down but Sark has fostered a culture where the next man up is just as good as the previous guy. The future is bright here. We’re nowhere near the Kai Money walk-on scenario we were under Herman.

Retaining Savion and giving him carries is preventing someone with RB talent from toting the rock.

Blue and Wisner with a rotating cast behind them is a legit upper P4 backfield. But another injury would be a very big concern.

Baxter also only had 659 yards last year (138 carries).  I'm actually a little tired of the media saying we lost our "best" running back.  That is debatable, in my opinion, especially with the way Blue finished the year.  I had high hopes that Baxter would live up to his hype, but he didn't last year, and Blue looked damn good to me after Brooks went down.

Whatever, we will find out.

Blue was notably better than Baxter by the end of last year. The idea is that Baxter really has more of an every down profile than Blue and could take a bigger step from Year 1 to Year 2. Moot now of course.

Going to be really interesting to see what they cook up at RB. I am so glad the OL is where it is.

I really believe Gibson will breakout this season. He's the most ready of the frosh RBs, and he can lay punishment up the middle, along with finding holes (that's what she said). Perfect opportunity to show what he's got. We're fine right now. Maybe for laughs sprinkle in some Colin Page at the goal line.

For the record, my comment about wishing we still had Red was a joke that he was the size of 2 RBs, hence having five right now.

it didn't help that both RBs had drive killing fumbles as we were gashing them towards the endzone

I think he is going to be better than people think. I think Gibson can provide some tough running when the OL is not dominating. That is something we havent seen from any of the currnet RBs.

I expect a top 3 RB recruit to be really good, so Heisman it is.

Unrelated to 2024 fall camp but could you find the tweet or article where CDC says Texas won't engage with the on the playing field sponsorship logos?

Baxter does things like help out in pass protection that the others have not proven. He's also a good runner in between the tackles in as far as we want to wear down defenses. Huge loss

I could be wrong, but didn't Baxter get banged up first game last season? If so we haven't seen even a full game with a healthy Baxter, and won't until next year.

i like to drink during football season too, but to completely black out for the entire season is impressive.

Silas Bolden or Nibbles, but I don’t think anyone will successfully fill that role.

I saw a highlight of Bolden that was a 92 yard TD on a jet sweep, so that was nearly half the 202 career rushing yards on a single play. He's on the roster as 160 meaning he probably weighs that while holding his helmet.  I'd be willing to bet the majority if not all his carries were jet sweeps or hitches behind the LOS.  He ain't lining up at tailback weighing what he weighs.

Sark likes to run the ball more than he passes on average throughout his whole career. I know there are a few games where we pass more than we run but he's pretty darn consistent with a balanced offense that runs more than throws.

Kelvin Banks–Cole Hutson–Jake Majors–DJ Campbell–Cameron Williams. Hayden Conner played center on the second team. I suspect this practice was designed to get him more reps in the event he’s needed as a backup behind Majors and Hutson at center. It it sort of telling that Hutson was at left guard rather than Neto Umeozulu.

We also have Robertson and Cruz at center. I would think Conner would be fourth in line at that position. Considering he can also play tackle, I'm cool with him being the first OL off the bench.

Get him every year in fantasy and all he does is put up 25+ points each week. But he and Wingo are built way differently. Deebo is built more like a slot, a la Moore

Except for the games he misses yearly due to injuries.

He’s currently running fourth string at Nevada.

Even with our banged up room he’s not going to be a 20+ carry/game guy. I think he’s best suited for a role similar to what we had him in last season which was a 4th and short specialist. He was useful in that role, but since he apparently wanted a lot more carries he wasn’t going to get those here.

He is pretty balanced, but I believe the OnTExas guys looked at the opening drive or first 2 drives last season and it was pass heavy. More of a pass to open the up the run strategy. He seems more creative in the pass game and coming from BYU, I think that is where his passion lies.

I too believe we should be a run-first offense when we are 6 deep at WR, 2-3 deep at TE, return 4 of 5 starters on the offensive line, only have three scholarship RB's and have a third-year starter at QB. That screams pound the rock and play ball control.
