The men's decathletes are surprisingly slow milers. Half the field was over 4:30 in the 1500

I would argue that many are surprisingly fast given their size.

For example, Leo is 6-foot-6, 240 pounds. He's massive. Yet a 4:42 PB in the 1500m--which would translate to just under 5 minutes for the mile, is more than respectable.

I mean, even the announcers were noting it.

I wouldn't consider a 5 minute mile that hot for any of these guys at this level. A garden variety NFL player could do that barring the lineman. These aren't shot putters or anything.

Sorry to say this, but for a pilot, you don't have a very good grasp of physics. You're also overestimating the endurance of NFL athletes who double platoon and, even then, rarely play all the snaps that their unit is on the field.

The commentators were merely joking at the difference in speed between the specialists--most of whom weigh 140 pounds or less--and the decathletes, many of whom are well over 200 pounds. They spent all morning watching the 1500m repechage and then to see the decathletes a few hours later on the same track ... it's definitely jarring.

If you want a genuine laugh, take those same distance runners and roll them out for the shot put and discus. Relatively speaking, the decathletes are much closer to the distance runners in the 1500m than the distance runners would be to the decathletes in those field events.

Um, firstly I'm not a pilot, and secondly I played football and ran track, 200m through 1500m. I'm pretty familiar with the distance.

But at any rate, I wasn't bagging on the decathletes, to me they are the best athletes in the games. My point is I was surprised how slow the back half of the field was in the 1500m. Like slower than me in junior high. The 1500m is the longest sprint, it's essentially a MAP interval, so guys like this with low body fat shouldn't have a big disadvantage like in the endurance distances. The front guys were pretty competitive, it was seeing the other guys so far back that was eyebrow raising. I guess they are good enough in the other disciplines that it covers it up.

My bad, I thought you were a pilot from other threads.

I ran the same distances; I also paid attention in physics.

If you were cranking out sub 5-minute miles in junior high, then you should've stuck with it. Regardless, I can guarantee you weren't anywhere near 240 pounds when you ran those times.

As for your comments about the decathletes not having much body fat and therefore not at much of a disadvantage, I'll reiterate that you are ignoring some very basic physics. The amount of work that Leo has to do to move his 240 pounds around the track for nearly four laps is vastly more than a 1500-meter specialist who is 100 pounds lighter. Honestly, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but your argument is staggeringly ignorant.

As for the "front guys being competitive," uh, yeah, there's a reason for that. Niklas Kaul, who won the 1500m decathlon event, weighs 198 pounds. Those ~42 pounds make a massive difference, regardless if they are muscle or fat.

Then, you  have to factor that this is the final event out of 10 after two grueling days. That is also going to have an impact on their times, although not to the degree that their weights will.

(Btw, sprinters tend to have lower body fat % than milers. Total mass is less of an issue in a sprint because it's an inefficient energy dump, but once you get to the middle distances, the need to be efficient over time becomes paramount.)

This.  9 other events in about 36 hours.  The fact they even get out of the blocks is amazing.  There is nothing left.

I mean, thanks for mansplaining I guess. I went to school as a mechanical engineer so I did have at least rudimentary physics. I think a low body fat, fit 240 pound guy can run a quicker mile than you are crediting them with, and I have knowledge and experience to support my position. Feel free to keep up condenscion though.

Clearly these guys aren't the fastest milers of their size, which is what I'm saying, they have other qualities that obviously make up for that which is why they are Olympic decathletes.

But anyway, I'm not looking for an argument, I respect these guys immensely.

I truly don't know what to say. Yes, I'm being condescending, but only because you're being deliberately dense.

Can a fit, 240-pound guy with low body fat run a sub 5-minute mile? Yes. We just saw it happen (extrapolating 1500m to 1609m). But that is by no means common; and it is not something that _most_ NFL linebackers and receivers of similar size and weight are going to be able to achieve, especially after two days of intense competition.

However, If you have personal experience of 240-pounders cranking out 4:30 miles, please post it on YouTube as it would be quite the achievement.

When?  Tomorrow?  I bet under 5% of NFL skill position players can run a 5:00 minute mile tomorrow.  They’re quick twitch guys.  They kill it in sprints, but they don’t train for 1600 meters. If you gave them 6 months to train for it, I’m sure some more can. But even then, I think you’re vastly overrating their ability in middle distance running.  It ain’t easy to get 200+ lbs moving that fast for that distance.  Which is probably why you never see D1 college football players running middle distances for their college track teams.  100M? Sure.  1500M?  Never.

OK, literally what I'm saying then, then we can dispose of all your being a dick for no good reason. My thought was decathletes would be overrepresantative of them. Apparently not.

I would be happy to take that bet. But Jesus this is a beating, I really don't care that much. I was just watching the race and thinking damn this is not fast, the the announcers started joking about the repachage and I thought i would comment and clearly I fucked up big time.

This has been like having a debate with a flat earther, so I wouldn't say it was for no reason. But, yeah, you're the victim. How tragic. I'll try to do better.

NED should be disqualified for that god awful voice.

I'll give her credit for speaking English so well. I just like to grief her a bit cuz I've been a Sydney fanboy since her debut at Rio 2016.

I do think that Femke's flowers only come in Sydney's absence, but they are both generational talents for their countries and all it takes is one clipped hurdle and, boom, Femke could finally beat Syd.

Will probably watch another 5 times again, maybe more.

It's that good.

I believe it, her closing speed was intense. The fact that it was up in the air she would even run it is crazy.

One minor thing to note--Norwood's 44.5 and Deadmon's 44.7 might seem virtually identical, but Vernon's is actually quite a bit faster because he lacked a running start.

aggy jokes aside, I was very surprised with Deadmon's performance. He's a solid, seasoned pro. Believe he split 44.1 in yesterday's world record, so to run more than half-a-second slower today hurt immensely.

Still, credit to Femke for an all-time anchor and to Holland for putting all their chips in the mixed relay basket.

A Norwegian is the world’s greatest athlete?

Ever watch the Winter Olympics?

  1. At the Winter Olympic Games, Norway has won 405 total medals including 148 gold medals, both considerably more than any other nation in Winter Olympic history. More than half of these medals have come from cross-country skiing and speed skating (it used to be half the disciplines). Norway is one of only three nations (along with Austria and Liechtenstein) to have won more medals at the Winter Games than at the Summer Games.

I skied my ass off once I learned how, maybe 200 yards of which was cross county. Fuck that, I liked gravity skiing.

I’ve always had supreme respect for those Nordic events. Winning the Decathlon Gold Medal is a nice addition.

I was pulling hard for Leo, but I know my Norwegian Au Pair is happy.

Yeah we were just discussing a couple weeks ago how insanely impressive biathlon is. Shooting with your HR pegged is intense.

Plus the ladies are gorgeous. Just don't fuck with them because they can track you down and shoot you

It's like he's never seen a decathlon before.  the 1500m always looks like that at the finish.  half the field is lying on the ground trying to catch their breath.  the 1500m is just survival for them.  they train for the other 9 events way more and they need tons of upper body strength.
