The most appliances you’ve had to replace in a year?

I’m on a real streak right now. Since the first of the year, I’ve done dishwasher, dryer, water heater, and next week the HVAC. Washing machine a little over a year ago too. Can’t really complain because besides the washer and dryer were about 25 years old, but them all going at once is something.

HAD to replace, or did replace.

I’ve become proficient at YouTube for any repair not involving a fried circuit board.

Dishwasher drain float, clothes washer drain strainer, dryer belt and roller tune ups (both front loaders) are easy.

But I just bought a new washer dryer set when I moved because the old ones were too deep for the laundry room doors, and I’ve had bad luck with LG dishwashers so if I have to replace one I just buy the highest rated Bosch.

But Monday I replaced a 1998 model chain drive liftmaster garage door opener with a new WiFi enabled Chaimberlain belt drive. It is slick. I could have fixed the liftmaster with some effort and new components but it wasn’t worth it.

I bought a repossessed house. I had to replace everything except the water heater. Fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, washer, dryer and a/c. Bought everything except the a/c at Sears outlet. Kenmore FTW. That was in 2000. Only had to replace the dryer.

Forgot about the dishwasher. Hardwater thrashed the pump on the OG and replaced it with a newer Kenmore in 2015. That one is till ticking.

I'm almost afraid to post on this thread for fear an appliance will sense my insolence and break for no reason. Plus most of them are approaching the end of their life cycle and we've had a pretty decent run lately.. For us, appliances take a crapper near a holiday like clockwork. Our washer (10 YO) and dryer (7) crapped out within 2 days of each other this past 4th of July . Our garage fridge burned out the Saturday before Thanksgiving last year resulting in us buying a new one and moving our 20+ year old Kitchen Aid (bare bones but rock solid) out to the garage. The previous Memorial Day it was the dishwasher. The dishwasher before that broke on New Year's Day. I've also had a kitchen faucet fall apart the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. And oh yeah, I was t-boned near the Domain last Dec 22nd resulting in our car being totaled.

The holidays are nervous times for me. And my birthday falls on Thanksgiving every so often so I tell my wife that's when I'm likely to kick the bucket.

Every time I see this thread, I cringe. I’ve refused to participate, but I’m at the end of my rope here. Over the last year, maybe year and a half … washer, dryer, dishwasher, microwave, deep freeze, one full HVAC system, pool pump/filter, Polaris pump, Polaris, (and if these count, Roomba and primary Dyson vacuum), and I’ve got a service call out for our other HVAC that’s stopped cooling. My 12 YO computer is on the fritz. Sometimes the screen comes on, sometimes it says nope, not today. I'm eyeing a gaming machine even though I only play Battlefield a few times a month. Cost probably $850.

My Samsung fridge has been buzzing loudly, and there is a puddle of water every few days. The repair person said the drains are clogged and he can fix it for $280, but not to do it, because the compressor is about to go. I'm ordering a new one this weekend which will cost at least $1,300.

The garage door opener on the 2x door shit the bed on Monday. The guy installed a new opener today for $850. The opener on the other 1x door broke suspiciously while he was here. So that's another $800.

Add that to the bathroom renovation that's going to start on Monday... October is going to be an expensive month.

knock on wood but according to mike gundy im a man and yet in this lifetime ive never ever had a major appliance malfunction.  thats even after living long term in 11 different properties and inheriting appliances of all different ages and qualities.

1 fridge tends to build up a lot of frost.  and 1 time i broke a glass cooktop because i dropped something heavy onto it.

Two summers ago it was:

  • Washer (went ahead and replaced dryer with it because our neighbors were moving and we bought their really nice set for just a few hundred dollars)
  • Dish washer
  • Interior breaker box (basement) and a leak in the plumbing/dish washer (see above) that was above it.
  • Garage door opener
  • A/C compressor replaced - not a full appliance replacement but a painful bill.
  • *And an almost* Thought our furnace was crapping out that winter, but it was just a sensor that had corrosion on it and needed cleaning.  Only had to pay the service call fee.

Re the fridge, my wife's boss said she unclogged her drain by unplugging the fridge, and letting it sit for 2 days. We were planning on doing it next weekend after we clean out more of the fridge.

But the MFer leaked, a lot, and the water got under the cabinet, which caused the wood to swell, and the laminate is delaminating. Just a bit in the corner where no one but me would notice. But still. MFer.

The new fridge arrives on Monday.
