SMU making a run at Saban makes a lot of sense if their boosters want to pay to play bigtime college ball.

As for Saban, he'd get to live in Preston Hollow, have zero expectations nationally, wouldn't be going to an SEC rival, easy path to the playoff, and have boosters that will buy him the players he wants.

UCF would also make sense for those reasons except idk if they have enough money

The cheat code for college HC’s is to have a HC with a rep for developing QBs. That allows the programs to have QB depth at a discount, and makes the OL and WR recruiting pitch simpler. I see theee programs like that in P2: Texas, USC and Bama.

Who are the Mid2 and G5 HCs (or OCs looking to move up) with that rep? That’s who Florida should be looking at.

Kliff Kingsbury is tanned and rested.

Maybe I'm leaning too  much into recency bias, but I don't see how 2025 Florida is more attractive than 2025 Ole Miss.

They have so much more potential to be a colossus of the sport every year, but they are a huge mess. It's a real "I believe in myself" play.

He apparently standouts as a control freak in a profession dominated by control freaks.  The problem is that he's not good at overseeing everything and is obsessed with what he calls his model and the constant tweaking of it.  He's the OC and also heavily involved with special teams which is coached day to day by 2 analysts.  He also has 2 OL coaches for some reason.  He gives off strong Tom Herman vibes, but with less alcohol/drugs and more being on the spectrum.

why is billy napier so bad at florida?

Line of scrimmage issues, mistakes with staff, focus, penalties, and QB huge NIL mistake.  Napier was not ready for a job as big as gata

https://sports.yahoo.com/why-florida-football-coach-billy-080354892.html

One reason Florida football hired Billy Napier was his track record for recruiting and developing offensive linemen.

Tackle Max Mitchell (New York Jets), guard Kevin Doston (Los Angeles) and guard O’Cyrus Torrence (Buffalo Bills) all developed into NFL players under Napier and his staff at Louisiana.

But building a consistent offensive line hasn’t panned out during Napier's two-plus year tenure as the Florida Gators football coach. It looked promising in his first season, when Torrence, an All-American guard, followed him from Louisiana. Since Torrence left for the NFL, Florida has surrendered 44 sacks in 15 games.

This season, Florida has failed to generate significant push up front in the run game. The Gators rushed for just 52 on 2.1 yards per carry Saturday in its 33-20 loss to Texas A&M.

“We had an incredible group at the previous stop,” Napier said. “Several NFL players, I mean, it was a strength for us. We would like to get to that place.”

I just can't believe how these guys can't actually coach and get these jobs.

At ULL, his ability to recruit as compared to the rest of the conference masked everything else he did poorly day to day because the sheer talent difference meant everything. He also had a good QB (Lewis) that he developed who stayed for all of his eligibility.

At Florida, his ability to recruit is negligible at best compared to most of the SEC, and all his shortcomings are highlighted because there is no real talent edge or, in some cases, at a disadvantage.  And it’s too late for him to develop a good QB who will stay multiple years, although you could argue Mertz has taken a step forward this year.

Lots of parallels to Tom Herman.

It feels like Napier pushed all his chips in last night and it almost worked. I don’t think he could have saved his job, but beating Tennessee probably keeps him employed until December. I’ll give him credit. Florida played hard.

I think Riley’s salary + perks will get him another season. His last appeasement card to play is to give up playcalling. A bitter pill from to swallow, but he’ll do it for $10 million+ a year.

A lot of smoke that Venables is going to throw Littrell under the bus. Most A list OC hires are going to want to bring their own OL coach with them. Will Venables dump Bedenbaugh too? I doubt it. They’ll hire somebody safe from Dabo’s coaching tree and things won’t improve unless they get a star QB out of the portal.

Kiffin needs to get the hell out of Oxford before everybody figures out he’s full of shit, again. He can’t do better than Florida, and they need a splash. I think he could have some moderate Dan Mullen like success there.

And . . .  there’s the tanned, lithe & freaky UF coed nubility local color Joey Freshwater lure factor.  The Old South pouty but frisky Scarlett O’Hara gauntlet of Oxford Belles must be growing tiresome by now.

You have to wonder what Lincoln is feeling.  Riley, OU, and maybe USC all came out for the worse.

At what point do we see some creative and hungry for winning university try a radical experiment with staffing and move to an NFL model in all but name. A general manager and staff take over NIL coordination, scouting, recruiting, portal shopping and just hire a coaching staff to take care of on the field aside from a few niceties like the formal in-home or campus visit?

There is no more limit in on-the-field instruction and this seems like an experiment that has had its time come. Very few football coaches have the skill set to oversee the new system.

Good news, ASU fans: Herm Edwards seems to have just learned the basic tenets of college recruiting

While I don’t think it’s a perfect comparison, Charlie Strong - Venables is fair right now. He has 2 really bad losses to Texas in 3 years. It’s well documented that they hate us more than they’ll ever love themselves.

Their fanbase is convinced they have an elite defense so I think he has a good amount of rope. But if they get smoked again in the Cotton Bowl next year, I think there will be some chirping.

While OU is undoubtedly a blue blood, it’s a difficult job given their recruiting footprint. They have to recruit and evaluate lights out in Houston, the Metroplex, Florida, Vegas, and Fresno. Unfortunately, for them to keep those pipelines open they have to retain subpar coaches like Murray.

New conference doesn’t help. A difficult schedule doesn’t help. Mics in the helmets really don’t help.

I think they go all in a portal QB, and Venables asks for and receives a 2025 mulligan because they couldn’t hold on to Gabriel + adjusting to a new conference.

OU is similar to Tennessee in a lot of respects. High level programs historically despite not having a ton of in state talent to pull from. Success at those schools requires a national footprint, but that path is harder now due to NIL. Tennessee has it together on that front, OU does not.

Lol why did anyone think that kiffin was gonna be good? He’s failed everywhere hes been

Except he's been quite good at Ole Miss by their standards. Even their losses this year have been fluke-y. The fanbase has been pleased with his work, but like all HC relationships, eventually everyone just gets a bit tired of each other.

As someone with a passing interest in the Pirates, that's not surprising. They're a much prouder and more rabid football fanbase than one might expect, and nothing he's done in Greenville has sparked joy.

Completely without reason.  24 seasons out of the last 40 at .500 or below. 2 conference titles in the past 40 years ('08, '09).

I did not say the team was good. I just said they care a lot 😅.

For starters, it's a brutal recruiting environment with four P5s and two other G5s in the state.

Grew up an hour and a half from Greenville, and during my senior year (Fall of 1991) I visited a friend who was a freshman at ECU and went to a football game.  I remember a mostly full and very loud and energetic crowd, although they had a damn good team that year -- Jeff Blake at QB, Robert Jones at LB -- finishing 11-1 with a No. 9 ranking.

Deck chairs on the Titanic.  Venables was meddling very hard, making him run some kind of hybrid Briles/air raid spread that he's never done before.

In all fairness, Littrell wasn't so hot running his offense, or whatever it was.  He was stunningly bad so Venables telling him to run something else makes sense.

Littrell seems like those executrives you run across in corporate America who have the education and 20 years work history but still know nothing about what they're doing.  The things I've watched with others breaking down the film on OU, they have no idea what OU was even trying to do.

Stein might be a good fit at piggy? But that’s a total tear down and rebuild. It’d take longer than 3 years, and I’m not sure any college coach has that much time anymore.

They should hire a Klieman type and hope they’re bowling in Year 2.

Arky will NEVER succeed no matter who is the coach. The are perpetual bottom dwellers for all eternity.
