Dan Mullen reportedly targeting former Ohio State assistant for spot on UNLV staff

Dennis spent four seasons coaching the quarterbacks in Columbus before moving on to Tulsa.

Doug Samuels         1 hour ago

Dan Mullen is working quickly to bring a quality staff to Vegas.

The latest example of that broke this morning when CBS Sports shared that a former Ohio State assistant is being targeted for a role on the offensive staff.  Corey Dennis, who spent the 2020-23 seasons coaching the Buckeye quarterbacks, is a target to join the Rebels new staff under Mullen, the report shares.

The son-in-law of Urban Meyer, Dennis spent this past season on staff at Tulsa.

He joined the staff of Kevin Wilson back in early March of 2024, being named quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.  By the end of the year, Dennis had stepped into the play calling role for the Golden Hurricane.

The 32-year old former Georgia Tech player started off as an intern on the Ohio State staff in 2015 and would go on to serve as a graduate assistant and senior quality control coach before being elevated to quarterbacks coach in 2020.

Somebody should hire the North Crowley OC. Nevermind the Asian thing, not only did North Crowley smash the state record for points, they put together an extremely impressive game plan against Westlake and went over 600 yards.

Quentin Gibson went from a backup qb as a jr to turning into Antonio Brown scoring 36 tds his senior year. That's coaching. Gates has put together a hell of a staff, and is doing a phenomenal job himself. But Eli Reinhart is a rising star in the coaching ranks

Wow.  Sac State - the educational side - has an endowment of around $120mm and an annual budget of $431mm.

It looks like the 23 CSU schools pool funds for an overall endowment of around $2.5B, which could be where the $120 estimate comes from.

The article from Sept indicates they had a goal of securing $50mm in NIL funds.  No comments on how much would be distributed annually.  I suspect it is $35mm in commitments, with several conditions and caveats.

Interesting quote:

Five days ago, the school announced plans for a new multi-use football stadium. The Sac12 executive committee announced Monday afternoon it has sourced $35 million in NIL funds from local businesses, community leaders and a local tribe in the last 24 hours.

Official on Purdue's site.  The "boiler" part of my handle is optimistic.

Self-quote w/ a followup to Purude's staff, fwiw.  Not a murderer's row of coaching, but far better than what previous coach assembled.  4 guys from UNLV, 2 guys from Arkansas (one who played for Odom).

HC: Barry Odom
OC/TE: Josh Henson (USC OC/OL 22-24, Aggy OL 19-21, OkSt, 25 years coaching)
OL: Vance Vice (UNLV 23-24, VT 16-21)
QB: Darin Hinshaw (UCF co-OC/QB 23-24, UAB 22, 25 years coaching)
WR/AHC: Cornell Ford (22-24 UNLV, 20-22 Toledo, Missouri with Odom)
RB: Lamar Conard (23-24 Purdue RB coach, Miami (OH), Illinois St, played at Purdue 96-99)
DC: Mike Scherer (UNLV 23-24, Ark 21-22, played for Odom at Missouri)
DL: Kelvin Odom (Arky: Asst DL coach 22-24, Delta state)
DE: Jake Trump (Arky: Defense quality control - played for Odom at Missouri)
DB: Charles Clark (Memphis 20-24, Ole Miss 2019, 17-18 Oregon; played at Ole Miss 03-07)
ST: James Shibest (UNLV 23-24, VT 16-21)

I am optimistic, but a little concerned about the OC/QB coach situation.  None of these guys called plays at their prior stop.  Henson watched Riley at USC.  Hinshaw watched Malzahn do it at UCF.  I guess it cannot get much worse than 1-11. :)

Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers reportedly turn to the NFL to fill offensive opening

Doug Samuels       Dec 20, 2024

Whitmer brings experience working with names like Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence, and Justin Fields.

Tonight, in the first ever game of the College Football Playoff, Curt Cignetti's Hoosiers travel to South Bend to take on Notre Dame in a wintery wonderland.  Whether their magical season ends tonight or weeks down the road, Cignetti has had a spot on his offensive staff open following the news of Tino Suneri leaving to become the offensive coordinator at UCLA under DeShaun Foster as soon as their season ends.

A report this morning shares how Cignetti is filling that critical role.  Pete Thamel shares that the Hoosiers are expected to add Falcons pass game specialist Chandler Whitmer as their new quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator.

Whitmer has spent the last several seasons at the NFL level with the Falcons and Chargers. Prior to joining the staff in Atlanta back in February, Whitmer was an offensive quality control coach in LA working with Justin Herbert and the quarterbacks while also assisting in the day-to-day operations of the offensive staff.

Before making the jump to the NFL, the former UConn quarterback - who started 24 games under center for the Huskies - was a graduate assistant at Clemson working with the quarterbacks and receivers during Trevor Lawrence's runner-up finish for the 2020 Heisman, and also spent one season as a graduate assistant at Ohio State while Justin Fields led the Buckeyes to a 12-0 regular season.
