Coach O replacing his OC and DC in the same off-season.  Again.

I wonder if they'll give 'the playbook' to the next guy.  I was told it was all about the playbook.

Sources: South Carolina expected to add SEC offensive line coach

By Doug Samuels -    December 22, 2020

Sources tell FootballScoop that Shane Beamer is adding a veteran offensive line coach to his staff.  Tennessee offensive line coach Will Friend, who has spent the last three seasons in Knoxville on Jeremy Pruitt’s staff, is expected to join the Gamecocks, sources have shared.  The move would mean Friend reuniting with South Carolina offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who signed a two-year deal worth $1.2 million per last December and has one year remaining on his deal.

The relationship between Bobo and Friend goes back years to when Mike was the offensive coordinator at Georgia under Mark Richt and Friend was the Bulldogs’ offensive line coach and run game coordinator. When Bobo landed the head coaching job at Colorado State in 2015, Friend was the first guy he brought to Fort Collins with the title of offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Rams.  In addition to those stops, other coaching jobs have taken Friend to UAB, Gardner-Webb, and West Alabama throughout his career.

More hires are expected to become clear in the coming days.

Sources: Lane Kiffin making a staff change on defense at Ole Miss

By Doug Samuels -

 December 22, 2020

Sources tell FootballScoop that Lane Kiffin is making a staff change on defense at Ole Miss.  Deke Adams, the Rebels defensive line coach, will not return for a second season, per source. Deke joined Kiffin’s staff back in January after previously coaching the defensive line at Mississippi State. Before arriving in Starkville, Adams coached the defensive line at North Carolina for two seasons.

Adams has previous coaching stops at South Carolina, ECU, Southern Miss, and ULM.  Over the course of his career, Adams has developed a number of NFL players including Jadeveon Clowney and a number of first round picks.

Update> Sources tell FootballScoop defensive grad assistant Marquise Watson will serve as interim defensive line coach for the Rebels’ bowl game.

The latest at Auburn

By Zach Barnett -  December 22, 2020

Auburn fired Gus Malzahn nine days ago, the Christmas holiday is approaching and the Tigers do not have a head coach. Blink twice if you’re surprised.  Auburn has held conversations with UAB head coach Bill Clark and Louisiana head coach Billy Napier, and sent overtures to a trio of star coordinators — Alabama’s Steve Sarkisian, and Clemson’s Brent Venables and Tony Elliott — only to have those overtures rejected.  Sources said Auburn could circle back to Clark, but would need to do so with better flexibility than it offered the first time around.

A source of the logjam, sources said, is Auburn’s insistence that the next head coach retain associate head coach/defensive line coach Rodney Garner, and possibly defensive coordinator Kevin Steele as well.

College football’s highest-paid assistant coach, Steele is in year one of a 3-year deal worth $2.5 million per year.  Steele actively campaigned for the head coaching job both in front of and behind the curtain, and so it’s simple to see why the next Auburn head coach would be hesitant to retain a defensive coordinator who so clearly thinks he should be the head coach.

“Nobody involved is fully aligned on what they want, and too many people want different things,” a source with knowledge of the search told FootballScoop. “Somebody is definitely trying to get the new coach to retain one if not multiple defensive staff members.”

In addition to Clark, the search may circle back to other Tier 1 candidates, including possibly Liberty coach and former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze.

With the holiday approaching, it’s likely that if a new hire is not in place soon, the search will drag into next week and beyond.

Report: Auburn is narrowing in on Boise State’s Bryan Harsin

By Doug Samuels -    December 22, 2020

Boise State’s Bryan Harsin has emerged as the primary target of Auburn’s search it appears.  Pete Thamel tweets that Auburn is narrowing in on hiring Harsin, and a deal is “expected soon.”

The search had taken number of twists and turns over the last several days with UAB’s Bill Clark, Liberty’s Hugh Freeze, Clemson’s Tony Elliott and Brent Venables, among others in the mix.

Harsin spent one season as the head coach at Arkansas State, going 7-5 back in 2013, before Chris Petersen left for Washington, freeing up a return to Boise State as head coach. He previously served as the program’s offensive coordinator from 2006-10.  In seven seasons at Boise State, Harsin is 69-19, with a 49-8 record in Mountain West play.  The move to Auburn would mean Harsin is following Gus Malzahn a second time, after first doing so at Arkansas State.

Word the last several days was that this was the search was headed to Tennessee coaching search territory, meaning hiring someone with a successful track record like Harsin brings is all the more important.

Arizona is hiring Jedd Fisch

By Doug Samuels -    December 23, 2020

Arizona is set to hire Jedd Fisch as their new head coach sources tell FootballScoop.  Adam Schefter first reported the hire this morning.  Fisch, who has previous experience in the PAC-12 as the offensive coordinator at UCLA in 2017, spent this past season as the quarterbacks coach for the New England Patriots.   He has also served in coordinator roles at Michigan, and Minnesota and also in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars and with the Rams as an assistant offensive coordinator.  This marks his first head coaching opportunity, but Fisch did serve as the interim head coach at UCLA in 2017.

Based on his work this year with Cam Newton I say good riddance.  Honestly, Cam just plain sucks so it wouldn’t matter who his coach is.  If Arizona can get the QB coach of the Pats then I would think UT could pull the head coach from the Pats.  Make it happen CDC!

Rodney Garner is the key to the Auburn bagman network. Any coach coming in would be foolish to get rid of him.

Wow, Grantham gets to return in 2021... 😋

Sources: Mullen, Florida making significant defensive staff changes

By John Brice -   January 1, 2021

Long-time Power-5 assistant and former Eastern Michigan head coach Ron English has been dismissed from his role as safeties coach for the Florida Gators after three years on staff in Gainesville, Florida, sources told FootballScoop.   Florida’s other defensive coach in the back-end, cornerbacks coach Torrian Gray is also not expected to return as Todd Grantham overhauls his secondary staff in Grantham’s expected return to run the Gators’ defense.

English had been a fixture on Dan Mullen’s staffs, and thereby Todd Grantham’s defensive staffs, since 2017, serving under Mullen and Grantham for a year at Mississippi State and the past three at Florida.  Gray’s a former Virginia Tech player who had spent a decade at his alma mater, time with the NFL’s Washington Football Team and three years on staff in two separate stints at Florida. Gray had been linked to a potential spot on Shane Beamer’s inaugural defensive staff at South Carolina; the two have deep history to their Virginia Tech days.

But the Gators are facing a particularly uncertain offseason on the defensive side of the ball, a situation becoming more magnified after Florida allowed its final three opponents to score a combined 144 points in a three-game season-ending losing skid that marred the 2020 campaign.  After Wednesday’s 55-20 drubbing by Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, Florida’s pass defense ranked 101st nationally as it allowed nearly 258 yards per game and more than 12 yards per completion.  Florida’s defense showed a drastic downturn this season after ranking in the top 10 nationally in both total defense and scoring defense in 2019. The group dropped to 74th in scoring defense, at more than 30 points per game, and 83rd in total defense, after its bowl game.

USC: Offensive line coach Tim Drevno and strength coach Aaron Ausmus will not return shares Inside USC.

Auburn: Kevin Steele will not be part of Bryan Harsin’s staff, tweets Cole Cubelic.

North Texas: Clint Bowen will not return as defensive coordinator.

Arizona:   hires Brennan Carroll as offensive coordinator

Arizona has hired Brennan Carroll as its offensive coordinator, the program announced Friday. Carroll will also coach the Wildcats’ offensive line.  Carroll worked alongside new U of A head coach Jedd Fisch for two seasons at Miami, when Fisch was the Hurricanes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Carroll the tight ends and receivers coach.

“Brennan and I have known each other for over 10 years and worked together during the 2011 and 2012 seasons,” Fisch said. “I am excited to build this offense together. He has incredible experience, grew up in a football house, been trained by the very best in the business, and has seen a culture of winning his whole life. Brennan’s positive attitude is matched by his football acumen. Our offensive linemen will be trained to become professionals both on and off the field.  I am excited to work hand in hand with Brennan on developing an offensive system to bring back the winning traditions of Arizona Football.”

The oldest son of Pete Carroll, Brennan got his start working on his father’s staff as a GA at USC in 2002. He was promoted to tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 2004, where he remained until joining the Miami staff. He spent the last six seasons as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.

Arizona finished 103rd nationally in yards per play and 118th in scoring, logging 17.4 points per game. Starting quarterback Grant Gunnell has since transferred to Memphis.

Sources: Part of Sark’s Texas allure is potential staff

By John Brice -     January 2, 2021

As Texas officials worked behind the scenes to bring an end to the Tom Herman era atop the Longhorns football program and find Herman’s replacement as the future of the program, a key point for Texas leaders – from athletics director Chris Del Conte on down – was a coach’s vision for the program.

The Horns’ leaders received voluminous, detailed plans from candidates that addressed their vision for the future of Texas football, detailed recruiting plans, program tenets – and, perhaps chief amongst all items, a projected staff.

It’s in that area in which Steve Sarkisian separated himself, along with Sarkisian’s previous experience as a head coach and his career renaissance at Alabama as offensive coordinator of the Tide’s record-setting attack.

In terms of coordinators, Kyle Flood is a Sarkisian colleague now at Alabama, someone who people close to Sarkisian tell FootballScoop that Sark “likes him a lot.” Flood could be the Horns’ offensive coordinator and a key linchpin on Sarkisian’s staff.  Sarkisian also remained heavily involved in play-calling even as a head coach at both Washington and USC, so that’s a key dynamic and one that we’re told Flood well understands with Sarkisian.

Blake Gideon, a former Horns player who started 52 career games in Austin, has carved a niche as a top special teams coach and rising young assistant. Gideon served as special teams coordinator for Lane Kiffin’s inaugural Ole Miss squad, which capped its season Saturday with a win against Indiana in the Outback Bowl. Sources said there’s mutual interest between Gideon and Sarkisian to join together at Texas.

At the defensive coordinator spot, Sarkisian can help Texas with a number of potential high-profile targets in a year in which defensive coordinators are very much in demand. Sources told FootballScoop that former Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, fired in November as South Carolina’s head coach, was expected to be in the mix for Sarkisian’s top defensive spot.  Kevin Steele, most recently Auburn’s interim head coach and defensive coordinator, also has emerged with multiple options that could include Texas.  Marcus Freeman, the wunderkind Cincinnati defensive coordinator, has elicited interest from Auburn’s new coach Bryan Harsin, as well as LSU, Michigan and Notre Dame. “Freeman would be an option,” said a source.  Zach Arnett, defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, has surged in national profile and did notable work in his first season with the Bulldogs; he’s considered a name to watch at Texas and with other openings.

Additionally, multiple sources told FootballScoop that a reunion of Sarkisian with defensive line specialist and recruiting guru Tosh Lupoi, who’s spent the past few seasons in the NFL, also has been discussed.  One final coach to keep an eye on is former UT assistant Chris Rumph. Rumph coached outside linebackers for the Houston Texans this season, but a return to Austin could be in his future.

We expect a number of these moves to become clear in the coming days.
