That is a fine position, but the kid can easily say fuck you I'm doing it myself.

of course they can. it's not some fucking edict from on high here like it sounded, it's organic based on a blended mix of our collective family values. my sons kick ass, they are way more in charge of their lives because they make good decisions. There is ZERO chance they are asking me about Ole Miss or Arkansas, but if they did, we would discuss it, and I would politely reason with them and I suspect they would drop it and move on to other schools.

I'm not saying those schools should be stripped of accreditation or they are terrible schools, they are just not going to be a great fit for our family. CA and PNW schools would be. and magically we are pretty much already in alignment as a family on these things.

So you went and paid for your college education using similar numbers to today?  If so, more power to you.

I'm 45 so obviously not, but what does that have to do anything. The kid can chose to take the money or not, that calculation is up to them whether it's worth it.

I had a mixture of funding for college  myself. Some scholarship, some I paid, my folks helped me with rent while I was in school.

The funny thing is I’m in a fairly conservative town, my neighbors on one side are a pair of old ladies who may or may not be married but they are awesome.  No one gives one shit about it here.  It’s great.

my wife and I benefit from "but those are our lesbians, they are alright" exception all the time. we fit the exception to the rule over and over. same with my fishing folks. those that know my past and are still with me are next level bad ass and would go to the mat for me so there's none of that lone exception stuff, but I keep my past to myself with most new people I meet.

basically, it's not the individual conservative that is the problem, it's the mob of conservatives that's the problem (hence the concern with large southern state schools).

If you guys are in alignment, then great. Personally I don't care if my child even goes to college, that may not be his path. Ill be just as happy for him to be a construction worker or bartender of that's what truly makes him happy.

As someone who went to California school though, outside of Berkeley there's functionally no difference to most southern schools. Just more porn in Santa Barbara's case

I think there is a distinction between "having a say" and financial support.

I applied to 3 schools, UF and two west coast private schools.  I got into all three and was most excited about the private options.  My mother just said "congratulations how are you going to pay for those?"

One was almost free and the others cost an arm and a leg... so Go Gata

They don’t participate in CAP. It is a great institution in its own right, especially for STEM. Richardson is a lot cheaper than Austin, and they give really good scholarships.

look I brag on a message board and parent another way. don't we all. of course I'm not a fucking idiot, telling a teenager they are forbidden to do something is a way to fuck shit up. I would not do that. reason though can work. and as mentioned repeatedly, as the wise parent I can tell you those schools are a really bad fit for my kids, and I think they already know it. so it's not going to come up. if it does, I'll take it in stride.

My thoroughly West Texas and uber-conservative parents, who both went to Tech, nixed me going to that liberal pinko commie school (my first choice) in the People's Republic of Austin and instead enrolled me at Tech while I was out of the country as an exchange student. So, I had to wait until grad school to go to UT while my kid is now attending school in Upstate NY. She's kinda swinging back around to the idea of returning to Austin upon graduation after previously saying she wouldn't come back to Texas. Either way, I'll support her decision.

when you factor in state and local politics, and the people who live around you I would beg to differ. in terms of the core class/learning experience, I actually think many schools are interchangable and success is more dependent upon the student than the school.

I have one son that is not going to college, he's my oldest. it's fine, he would likely not enjoy or do well in formal school. sharp though. he will figure it out.

Pretty much in my family they go hand-in-hand. I am not paying for my kid to go to an out of state school or private school just for some “college experience”. If they have a legitimate reason, eg a particular career path or pathway to a prestigious grad school that a given university would facilitate, we will definitely take that into consideration. Some of the SEC schools will give highly qualified Texas HS graduates in state tuition, so there is some leeway with that.

In addition to college having gotten so expensive, for grants and government subsidized loans, the parents’ financial statements are required, even if the parents are not supporting the child, I think up to age 23 at least. So a kid trying to do it on their own could end up with a crushing amount of debt

SEC schools are out of the question for my kids. As are OU and A&M. It’s UT, Big 10 (including Oregon and Washington) and ACC with some CA system and privates thrown in to consider.

The schools themselves are actually by and large fairly progressive places, at least by the standard of comparing them SEC rant (which is a plague of stupid). The student body, and much of the alumni aren't what's on that board, its our sidewalk fans that are the absolute worst.  Tuscaloosa, for example, is actually a pretty strong democrat area, and while there is certainly a strong conservative base that exists on campus and around it, it's not that bad.  Is it Atlanta, no, but is it as bad as the knuckle draggers on that board make it appear, absolutely not.  Other SEC schools that I've been to are along the same lines.  We have our share of idiots, no doubt, but so does everyone.

It’s precisely why those areas don’t fit our needs. Texas would (and still may be) a hard pass for similar reasons. We are tired of being progressives on an island. Why would we opt for the same thing in another state?

I'm not suggesting you should, just telling you that deriving info about us from that group, isn't a very representative way to look at us.  There are several goons with strong ties to Texas, now imagine I lumped all of you in with that?  I don't think you'd take kindly to it (nor should you), nor would you feel it's overly representative of what you guys are about.  (I definitely don't that think, by the way).

My daughter made it clear she wasn't interested in A&M.  My son asked if he should apply there, and I simply asked "do you want me to pay for it?"

I didn't say I WOULDN'T pay for it, I just asked the question.  He laughed.  He's now at UT (as is my daughter).  There's nothing wrong with a little coaxing.

Honestly, I’m not sure I’m one of us anymore and I’m certainly done defending anything related to Texas. I’m deep into the stages of grieving the loss of my home state. So you can say what you want and I probably wouldn’t be able to disagree much. The state of affairs in the heavily conservative states for queer folk is abysmal and should have all queer and queer loving or adjacent folk deeply concerned. I’m not being political here I just see no reason to send your kids to those states to start their adult lives. It’s honestly inconceivable to me, Texas included. Texas is only on the list because it’s cheap for us and we already know this devil.

UTD is basically in Plano, across George bush is Plano, and it’s all residentially around it south of the school in Richardson for the most part. It has no campus life, and is basically a commuter stem school for locals and foreigners with family local. Solid for academics if that’s all you care about, but it’s not going to give any young person a very well rounded college experience which is part of the reason you go off to college.

I’m sure many more OU players are Trumptards compared to you all, but both schools alums are way behind matched up vs most typical SEC fans.  Jesus these people are a beating.  Tried to check out SECrant and it’s mind boggling how many are openly  proud of the confederacy and all its glory.  And they’re serious.  There’s certainly many a fool here that will vote for Trump but it all pales in comparison.  Still fuck anyone voting for that POS regardless of their college allegiance.

Pre-Texas/OU SEC (Vandy notwithstanding) are a confederacy of dunces.  Texas/OU additions will help, but not enough.  And frankly, OU folks are clearly in the top-25%.

Sports conference affiliation is no longer about status, intellect, research, geographies, etc.  It's about dollars to the athletics departments.  The fans we will encounter going forward will be more akin to NFL fans.

Interesting discussion. My daughter is a freshman at Ole Miss despite being liberal and hating Trump as much as we do. My ex-wife's family has deep ties to Ole Miss -- she went there, both of her parents and several other cousins went as well. I made sure she was going into this with her eyes wide open and that was before the dipshit from Plano made national news for his shit back in May. The only schools on my "Absolutely Not" list were aggy and Baylor. Thankfully, she never looked at either.

to be clear, no is saying that everyone at a Southern school walks in or out a stepford wife racist. We're talking about averages. and of course, that average person does not see themselves in that light.

This^^^. One thing Ole Miss taught me was how to trust myself, and my decision making. I was relatively proud of myself (being as young and naive as I was), that I wasn’t swayed in one direction or the other. I actually considered myself as more of a third party observer throughout college. A spy of sorts. The school itself has made an enormous effort to de-stigmatize itself from the reputation it has deservedly earned. But idiots are going to idiot, racists are gonna racist, etc. Staying above that bullshit is what it’s all about.

My honest take is most people are true to themselves, the ones that are swayed are going to be swayed in any environment. You aren't netting anything by putting your kid under whatever nebulous "influence" you may prefer. They still have to live their entire life.

I went to College of Charleston, UC Santa Barbara, and I sit on the Board of Trustees at our University here, which are all very difference places in pretty much every way you can imagine, and there is almost no difference in outcome for the kids.

Since we're talking colleges and not why Greg Swindell is a dumbshit, check out University of Oregon.  I was just up there a couple weeks ago for my daughter's orientation.  I got such a great vibe from the campus and student body representatives who were on the program panels.  Very diverse, inclusive, and not surprisingly a liberal bent.  But it also didn't feel like an echo chamber.

My daughter on her own said "hell no" to any school in the deep south.
