After some serious soul searching and reflection, they'll compromise and Urban will sit out the home games against Oregon State and Rutgers.  Even though Urban clearly did nothing wrong, tOSU will send a strong message that all coaches must remain vigilant and have zero tolerance for domestic violence.

Yeah but Title IX is not under the umbrella of the NCAA, or is it?.  That's the federal governments jurisdiction.

Correct.  It's a Federal program, but the NCAA does comply with it and has their own program enforcing it.  While Title IX is mainly focused on equal participation, benefits and discrimination, it's the sexual antics of Zach Smith on school property, on school time, and while he was representing the University (e.g. at the White House) that may be touching on a violation of some aspect of Title IX.  (Not an attorney or compliance officer here).

But the problem with the NCAA...you never know when they are going to strike, or rules they will try to enforce.  They come down hard on some schools, yet let others off with a wrist slap for the same violations.  Interesting we haven't heard much from them in a while.  I wonder if "the powers that be" at the major universities finally stood up to them and told them to back off or they will disband from the NCAA.  And I have no insight on this subject at all...just going by observation from the past few years versus the late 90s and early 2000s.

So this is what they are going to say for everyone to save face, brilliant. The BoT wont be touched by the media and if they are, no one will care.

If this isn't obvious air cover, I don't how what is.  This is in no way being leaked accidentally.

They've given the more visible president deniability while pushing the blame to the mostly faceless board.  Plus, they've allowed Urban to slip in a self righteous denial of guilt.  They've framed this all up so that when it comes out that his only penalty is time served, the president can tell the angry mob that he was simply overruled.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if much of the session today was spent crafting this cya "leak" to ensure all sides (Urban included) were comfortable with the story to be floated.

If the BoT and the President can't or won't get on the same page and Urban is reinstated with no punishment, the President will be doing his best "feets don't fail me now" and will have a new job soon.  It will be a complete disaster, PR and otherwise.

Not to mention that picking coach over President will piss off a shitload of faculty.

That's assuming they're not actually on the same page.  I'm not sure I believe the story at all.  It feels more plausible that, if he's going to be reinstated, all parties are OK with that, but floating a story that the president "strenuously objected" but was overruled helps save face.

There's not much face left to save at this point.  tOSU Harvey Dent'ed the fuck out of their face already.

Considering 2 weeks ago many people (myself included) thought he was as good as gone, you would think he would take his 2 game suspension and dance his way offstage.

I'm in the same camp.

However, Urb knows he can scorch the earth, fuck all the admins and have the support of the fanbase. Worse case scenario, he fucks off and lands a nice cushy 5 million a year gig elsewhere. He's got nothing to lose.

His doctor has advised against dancing.  He has that whole very serious very real very opportunistically timed heart condition, you know.

Any university in which the football coach is more powerful than the school president should be unaccredited.  They are no more an educational institution or above board than the football teams of army surgeons in Robert Altman's M*A*S*H.

What world are you living in?  This is true for every successful coach at any blueblood program, and for most next tier programs.  Luckily, very few of them have had this type of faceoff.

Plus, they have drug this out all day so as to miss most of the news cycle. It'll be after the evening news for sure and possibly after 10pm.

Yep.  They are ruing the fact they didn't handle this yesterday, with an announcement and presser at, say 4:00 CDT.

Apparently Meyer wants to be fired OR reinstated.  He will under no circumstances accept a suspension

THIS is the holdup.   According to finebaum

Assuming this is true, between this and the insanely one sided agreement aggy just signed with Fisher, the power dynamic between some of these coaches and their employers has gone off the rails.  There are some bad precedents here.

this interesting tidbit is on the wiki for President Drake

Waters firing

Drake fired Ohio State marching band director Jon Waters[16] on July 24, 2014, after a university investigation found that the band's "sexualized culture" was "inconsistent with the University's values and Title IX requirements." The university stated that there were "serious cultural issues and an environment conducive to sexual harassment within the Marching Band", and that the band director "was aware or reasonably should have known about" it.[17] Waters has sued for reinstatement, accusing the university, Drake, and a provost of discriminating against him by disciplining him differently than a female employee and denying him due process.[18][19][20][21] To date, Drake has stood by his decision to terminate Waters as marching band director.[22] As of January 2015, the university had spent nearly $1 million in taxpayer-provided funding in defense of the decision and subsequent actions.[23] Invoices requested under Ohio's public records laws were heavily redacted, leading to more questions about what work the university had paid certain firms to perform.[23]

so they fired the band director because they said he should have known that (presumably students) were sexually harassing each other and they are being sued by him and they have spent over ONE MILLION dollars to defend the firing

and he is claiming that he was treated differently than female staff members....and he is represented by s former Ohio Attorney General that was also on the osu BOR

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2014/09/26/Fired_band_director_waters_suing_ohio_state.html

pretty damning hypocrisy if you read the above two stories and the support for the band director and the comments about zero tolerance

If Drake gets "overrulled" he should step down. That would be fun to see.

I had said before they were probably having a hard time reconciling if they could pay off (or simply blame) the AD for all of it or if they could deal with and bribe people like the president to stay around for a year or so and be quiet and not resign immediately if it came down to "well bad stuff happened, but urban does gooder stuff on the field for us so he stays with time served" especially in conjunction with the fact that he would probably push back against anything other than "time served"

it looks like they are pretty much facing that exact situation

It'd be fitting if he had a real heart attack when this is over, and missed the season.

the fact that they have to drag this out this long is pretty embarrassing in and of itself

either he did something wrong and you punish him and he accepts it and you accept the "optics" of the punishment you gave or you say he did nothing wrong and accept the "optics" of that

dragging a face to face meeting out 6 hours after after you have had weeks to review things reeks of "urban please accept some punishment, please do not force our hand".....+uh oh he is forcing our hand what are we going to do lets go back and beg him again"......oh wait now he knows we are desperate and he is saying he wants us to say that he did nothing wrong who will we blame"......"oh shit that guy does not want to take the blame and that guy does not want to look like the football coach just made a power play on him why did we not anticipate all of this what do we do"......"lets go beg urban to not force our hand on this and accept some punishment"

Deliberate. Done to look like they’ve absolutely exhausted every fiber and righteous neuron in their collective beings to spew forth what was already decided two weeks ago.
