In on Page 3!

Let’s score at least 30 this week!

It could be 30-0 but if we don’t score 40 certain posters on this site heads will explode.

IT insider notes on CSU (position by position breakdown)

Spoiler

Former Texas wide receivers coach turned co-OC Jay Norvell makes his return to Austin this Saturday.

Colorado State went 5-7 last year but it was filled with bad luck, similar to Sark’s 5-7 in 2021. It’s the perfect first game matchup for Texas. CSU isn’t a patsy, but it isn’t a credible threat to win the game.

On offense, CSU will text Texas in ways that will help the Horns prepare for the rest of the non-Michigan slate, namely with the passing game.

This is probably more than most of you ever cared to know about Colorado Stat but I have a unique ‘in’ on this specific game.

Wide Receiver
This is Colorado State’s best position.

The offense starts with wide receiver Tory Horton. Horton has put on 20 pounds since last year, and is now 6-3, 190. Despite his 96-catch season, he had to play through multiple nagging injuries last year. He should be more durable but is he as explosive?

Said a source: “Legit player, really large catch radius, can make plays for QB. Struggles with catching through contact. Physical DB’s give him some trouble but he’s stronger now. Not great at LOS, can be re-routed, has long strides on the vertical once he gets free. Footwork at line was not great last year.”

“They also got a WR who transferred from Baylor named Armani Winfield who seems to be pretty promising, good speed and hands. Was a pretty legit high school player, a 4 star.”

Yep, we know of him…

“They also got Donovan Ollie a WR, he was at Washington State / Cincinnati, older guy who’s got snaps under his belt. Good hands, great route runner just not super twitchy. He is a new addition to the team.”

“Forgot their starting slot WR is a kid who transferred from SMU named Dylan Goffney, a bigger, stronger slot WR. He is from Cypress, Texas, and he has strong hands and can make tough contested catches across the middle. Has good body control but just isn’t a super fast guy.”

Goffney was Connor Weigman’s top target at Bridgeland.

Quarterback
Braden Fowler-Nicolosi had a coming out during last year’s Colorado. That game was a good microcosm for his season. Three touchdowns, but also three interceptions.

“Throws a lot of picks. Decision-making, will throw 3 TD’s, but then some bad interceptions. Interceptions are usually decision-making issues not accuracy. Forces it too much. NFL level arm. Can scramble a little but just to buy time to throw it. Gets the ball out quick when the first read is there. Not sacked a lot.”

As Paul W. has pointed out, Tory Horton is targeted a lot over the middle of the field, but those are generally tighter passing windows with more defenders roaming.

Texas should be able to turn the former Aledo quarterback over a time or two.

Running Back
“Justin Marshall is a legit back. They will likely run with two guys but have five who could play. Marshall is not a super tough runner but he’s very fast, can make people miss, laterally quick, and can make things happen. Kobe Johnson was on North Dakota State when they won the FCS title. Patient runner, not a hard-nosed bruiser. Likes to go sideways.”

Patience as a runner is not a recipe for success against Texas.

Offensive Line
“This is the best O-line they’ve had in Norvell’s tenure. Center Jacob Gardner is legit, will at least be in an NFL camp. Four-year starter. Team captain. Drew Moss, transfer from Lamar and another Texas kid is a big piece on O-line. He’s at guard. He and Gardner will be pretty good against a lot of teams they play. Braden didn’t really get sacked. The year before they gave up a ton of sacks.”

Tight End
“They picked up a Juco Jackson Warren but he’s out with a season ending injury. He was legit. FSU had offered. Now they’re going with Vince Brown, who is a skinnier TE, not physical, solid hands but struggles to separate. Not a great blocker.”

Defensive Line
“It’s pretty sound. Against teams that aren’t like Texas they’ll do well. James Mitchell from Duncanille quick, light on his feet. Cam Bariteau is good. These are three-year starter types. Not a lot length but fire plugs, quick, can fill the hole. Good pursuit players.”

These sound like the DT’s Texas Tech has had the last couple of years. Good players, just limited by lack of length.

“Nuer Gatkouth at defensive end is a player but will be out with turf toe. That’s a loss. Mukendi Wa-Kalonji, slower, a tad stiff, but he can hold the edge pretty well. Not a pass rusher, not bendy, not all that quick. Have a couple of new guys but they’re younger. Mukendi has some experience.”

Linebacker
“Starting Mike ‘backer is Chase Wilson. Team captain. Struggles in coverage, plugs the run pretty well. Really, really struggles in coverage. Lacks lateral quickness. They’ve moved him to Will at times, they use two. Routes like mesh will give him problems. The other linebacker is a taller guy, Boum Jock, 6-3, 6-4, put on a lot of weight. Came in at 220, up around 245 now. More athletic than Wilson, covers pretty well. He’s a converted safety. Good feel for passing game. Still young, started as true freshman last year. They could switch them between Mike and Will.”

Safety
“Free safety is a dog, Henry Blackburn, the kid who hit Travis Hunter. High IQ, super physical. Will be a four-year starter. Not the fastest, not super rangy, but plays very hard. Texas WR’s should expose him with their speed. Jack Howell, strong safety, former freshman All-American, great in run fit, doesn’t do all that great in coverage. Not super fast. Liability if he’s in man. Tackle machine. Both are great in run support but have issues in coverage.”

Nickel
“They play two guys at nickel. Smaller one, Dominic Morris (Klein Oak) came from Furman two years ago. Very good footwork, converted corner. Solid in run fit, too. Eyes get him in trouble. Solid player. Ayden Hector was pretty highly rated, was at Washington State but then took a break from football. Walked on. Solid player, good tackler. Shoulder injury in 2024, missed most of year. Not the fastest but still solid in man coverage. About 6-feet, 215. They have a thunder and lightning thing going on.”

Cornerback
“Dominick Jones is a tall rangy corner. NFL athleticism. 6-3, really long arms, really quick on his feet. Was also at North Dakota State. One of the only guys who can run with the Texas receivers. Shows up in run support. Former safety. Overall good player. Looks like he belongs playing against Texas. New prototypical corner. Isaiah Essissima (Hightower) is very aggressive, likes to get hands on. Smaller guy, 5-9, 5-10. Was at Wake Forest then went to Nevada. Quick feet, but will struggle with stronger receivers. Defends shorter and underneath routes well due to quickness. Struggles in 50/50 situations. If it’s not him it will be Elias Larry from Navy. He can run but same problem as IE, has hard time winning position, struggles locating ball in the air. Good size, 6-foot, 190.”

If it gets released like last year, the Texas 2-deep will be released 1-2 hours before kickoff. Lulz.

20 of 22 starters in at least their 3rd year in the program. Veteran group.

I thought it was interesting Sark said yesterday his goal is to get you in the game in the first half if you are in the two-deep. Hard to envision a 56-7 type blowout if they are rotating that early and often unless CSU is turning the ball over left and right.

How many of their starters make Texas’ two-deep?

I know.

I'm just pointing it out because I think this will serve as a little bit more of an opening-game test than facing Rice last year, who could barely throw a forward pass with JT Daniels and averaged 3.4 yards per play. At least we should be able to have somewhat meaningful takeaways in this one, specifically in the secondary.

In a lot of cases there isn't much difference, if any at all, between the first team dude and the second.

I mean, if I knew how games were going to turn out, I’d make a lot of money with that skill. I don’t. I’m just saying, a fresh Texas backup against a winded CSU starter, or fresh backup, isn’t necessarily something that plays in CSU’s favor. But, again, who the fuck knows.

What are the odds he calls Sark in the locker room at half time and tries to transfer to Texas for the second half?

Could be thinking of someone else, but wasn’t he the receiver that decommited in the middle of our game against Kansas State during Sark’s first year?

This game is far from a walk in the park.

lol wut. Colorado State was 5-7 last year and 3-5 in the Mountain West, they lost 2 or 3 of their best players to bigger schools, and we’re a 32 point favorite.

This game should be the epitome of a walk in the park.

We're going to look like we did against Rice last year, win by 20 but looking shitty in some stretches. New receivers, mostly new RB crew, replacing 2 NFL tackles on DLine, first game play calling not wanting to show anything, etc.

Everyone's pet heads will fall off.

Then later we'll play for the SEC championship and everyone will have forgotten about this game.

Spoiler

We continue to hear more and more about Texas likely platooning receiver units, at least in this very first game.

**

Sark made it very clear yesterday that this initial “depth chart” for the game against Colorado State is nothing more than temporary.

He wants to see which players really bring it on gameday and then, and only then, will true depth charts be solidified.

The temporary depth chart was not released by Sark yesterday perhaps as a way to remind his players he’s still keeping tabs.

**

It did not take a genius to hear Sark’s response yesterday about the punting position to surmise that true freshman Michael Kern is expected to be the likely starter.

Sark said he expects him on the field on Saturday and to perform well.

**

I’m going to go ahead and put this out there: I think Alfred Collins will be the team’s most improved player.

Collins has finally had the off-season we all had been hoping for the previous three years.

I don’t know that he’ll make his way into the first or second round like Byron Murphy or T’Vondre Sweat. But I expect Collins to make the leap from a depth piece on last year’s roster to a head-turner on this year’s.

**

Colorado State will likely have a better passing QB and more explosive receivers than Michigan. They will be better in fact than most teams on the Texas schedule, as the Horns will see eight first-year starting QBs this year and CSU receiver Tory Horton is labeled as a likely first-round pick.

Keep that in mind on Saturday when the Rams have success through the air at times.

Overall, it should be a really good week-one test for the Texas secondary and the Texas pass rush for the 2024 season.

Jesus, I hope so.  Would be nice to see some guys step up on the DL line Sweat and Murphy last year.

This will be my first game at DKR in a few years.  My 10 yr old will be in tow as well.  It will be his first game since he was 6.  I was wondering about parking.  I used to park at an office off Red River and 31st St.  Anyone know if that will still be a viable option?  Also, I know Longhorn City Limits will get rolling at 11, but when will the Blvd get going and gates open?

Oh yeah. Switched from eating momma's cooking every other night on the recruiting trail to running around in 90+ degree heat in camp.
