2024 CFB polls/rankings - Texas #3/ #3 /#3 (CFP/AP/Coaches)

This 5 seed thing is really BS.  you get to play the 2 worst teams in the the first and second round and what might be effectively the #12 and #11(or worse) ranked team.

they need to just rank the teams 1-12.  In the NCAA tourney a conf champ just gets ranked the same as a non conf champ.

It's a tremendous advantage, but you still have to play an extra game. Haven't looked at the numbers but I'm pretty sure you'd still much rather be one of the teams with a bye. But you're right that it seems close plus at #5 you get to host a playoff game.

ND effectively gets a bye not playing a CCG game. Extra week of the rest

Of course, there’s the questions of too much rest versus coming out rusty after a bye

Aaaaaand Oklahoma beat Alabama.

Regarding UT's place in college football, here's what I have seen since graduating from UT 30+ years ago.

-- I have lived in (or spent time in) several cities and traveled to a great many on both coasts. Been around people from top football, tier 1 research universities. The overwhelming number college football fans love it when Texas is kicking ass.

-- When fans/grads of other schools learned I am a UT grad, they unsolicitedly raved about VY and Colt, raved about the Texas-USC game, even years later.

-- Or they ask "what the hell is happening at UT" during the Strong/Herman smoking craters.

-- Sure, Aggy and some team fans love for Texas to be down. But that is not what I have seen overall. Most fans of other teams would rather play and beat a top shelf Texas team rather than a Strong/Herman fiasco.

Bottom line, Texas kicking ass with Bevo on the sideline .... and the horns on the helmet ... it all fits the myth of Big Bad Texas.... and is good for college football. The ratings don't lie.

Yeah but they are going to get that bye either way as an independent, part of the reason they can’t get a bye in the CFP.

It's like Notre Dame and USC being good. The hate flows openly but I'll be damned if you aren't tuning in to watch.

If I hear anyone say Texas hasn't played anyone after yesterday I'm kicking them in the balls. Texas has a loss where we played like shit against (to use one metric for convenience sake) the #5 FPI team.  Texas has beaten the fucking brakes off of:

#23 FPI

#25 FPI

#34 FPI

#42 FPI

and a road win against #39 FPI

No one is perfect except Oregon.

So spare me the fucking "WELL WHY DOES TEXAS DESERVE #3" on Tuesday.

Because Sark shows up in wrap around shades and a white quarter zip and despite having a fucking grab-bag QB keeps winning football games and more often than not hands out ass-beatings.

If we lose to aggy? Sure. Maybe not the best resume at that point. Before then? Shut the fuck up and get your shine-box, Penn State and Domer.

True that.  But, I would expect the answer to be that Alabama took them lightly and was shocked by an OU team that is clearly not yet SEC ready even though they are a true blue blood and not the “we’re back” Texas pretender.  There’s always a narrative.

the issue is the gulf between a 5 seed and 12 in football is pretty massive vs. what you get in NCAA basketball.  Plus that 5 seed might be a 1 loss SEC or Big Ten conf champ loser in some years.

and yes the extra game is at home.  It is a huge advantage for ND as well as they NEVER have to play the extra game to get it.  the difference in toughness between what hte 5 seed and the 6 have to do in the playoff is massive in this format.

My dad (UT alum, RIP) traveled for business a fair amount during DKR's 1960s heyday ....  said that the overwhelming number of college grad business people he met cheered the fact that Texas beat ND for the title in 1970. ND hate is deep and widespread.

Said fans/grads loved talking about Royal, Bevo, the wishbone, '69 Texas-Arky game with Nixon in stadium, UT stuffing Joe Namath at the 1-yard line in final minutes to beat Bama in 1965 Orange Bowl.

-- Don't forget, that Texas-Bama Orange Bowl was the first televised bowl game at night and had a MASSIVE national audience!  Far larger than anything today, by an order of magnitude.

I'll say it again: Texas kicking ass is great for college football.

Most fans love it far more than they hate it.

So sick Notre Dame getting special treatment because they're an independent. The committee or powers that be need to make an example of them and deny them playoff privilege...Get your ass in a conference like everyone else !

When there was only 4 spots I hated it, with 12 I've got no problem as they schedule well. I think it ends up hurting them more than helping them with all the travel and lack of common opponents.

Respect for this but as a mid 40's fat guy I'm ready for a new set of memories about classic games and Texas national championships that we can talk about when we're old.

Yah, and I for one despite my disdain for them, actually want Miami, ND, SMU, and CU in. Mostly because I think Texas matches up really well against all of them.

Granted we couldn't play them all.

But.. I would love it if we could.

Also, win and in. That's the "key take away". I'm perfectly happy to get a bye week and watch all the teeth nashing about who does and doesn't make it. It will be glorious.

I've had family in town this weekend including a female cousin's fiance and another female cousin's boyfriend - one from DC one from NY. Of the 13 of us that went to the Texas game yesterday my dad is the only one with an undergrad degree. One uncle went to UT law and there are a couple other UT grad school degrees in the mix. Everyone was wearing burnt orange and cheering for Texas.

It's such a huge brand that serves to represent the state itself when it comes to football. Texas may be both the most loved and most disliked team. But you're probably right that for more casual fans that didn't go to a school with a program worth a shit it's more fun when Texas is good.

Alabama fell just six spots... A&M fell just five.

SEC gets you at least one game bump vs Big 12. about a 0.5 game v ACC.  Hard to tell on Big Ten since it is 4 teams 0 to 1 loss and a bunch of complete shit for the rest of the 12 teams.

They've set up Alabama to jump back into the Top 12, ahead of the loser of Miami-SMU. It's so blatant.

I'm old enough to remember that if we lost to Kentucky or even aggy we would drop all the way out of the playoffs.  Bama gets fucking DRUBBED by a shitty OU team we beat by 30 and can still get in.  too funny.

Miami might be the biggest fraud in the country. Their schedule is an absolute joke. They might not play a top-25 team until their conference championship game.

I hope to god SMU beats them and Miami will have no justification at all for making the playoffs with 2 losses and that schedule.

A 3 loss Alabama should definitely get in over a 2 loss Miami.

The ACC is fucking garbage. Miami's best win is fucking Duke? Miami is a complete fraud that has played nobody.

I've never bought into the rust theory.

My take is that the risk of a major injury or even a somewhat minor one (ankle injury anyone) plus just additional wear and tear greatly outweighs any perceived rust issues. Teams typically perform better post a bye week.

If anyone knows of any good quantitative metrics that take out subjectivity and I'd truly love to see it.

I know it's a conjecture item people love to fight over, my question is, is there data supporting either side. Real data, not singular examples.

If rankings hold in future results:

1. Oregon

2. Texas

3. Miami

4. Big 12 team/Boise State

5. Notre Dame

6. Ohio State

7. Pedo State

8. Georgia

9. Indiana (placed above Tenn to avoid a conference rematch)

10. Tenn

11. ????? (Winner of SCAR/Clemson or 3 loss Bama?)

12. Big 12 team/Boise St

I truly believe it’s probably an ACC team there.  If a Miami loses a last second game to SMU or Clemson dominates SCAR

So if we are to entertain the idea that sec conference runner up shouldn’t be punished, and aggy lands around 20 in that poll this week- then they’d need to jump up around 10 spots by beating us to be in a position to say they shouldn’t be punished for losing to Georgia.  Tough to do this late in the year.

Aggy will not get in with 4 losses.  SEC titles game or not. Georgia will with 3 losses.

I agree with your larger point. Missouri is a paper tiger for sure. However, against Miami or CU I wouldn't bet it either way. I'd say the same for LSU, Ole Miss and Bama. I could see them beating BYU, Miami, ND, CU or SMU. Of course, I fully admit I could see it going the other way so as not to sound like an SEC homer.

I think there is a lot more parity broadly speaking but who is great in the Big 12, ACC or B1G. As a Texas fan which conference do you think would have been tougher to get where we are today?

Looking across college this year, I think there is a new definition of what a good team looks like. Great teams, no. Good teams, absolutely.

We get too caught up in the top 25. There is not the massive chasm between number 17 and 35 that we pretend there is.
