I never suggested the ccg was the ONLY way for auto-bids.

But 2 teams going head to head for it is certainly more “exciting” than no ccg.

And, as the obvious has been pointed out multiple times, conferences like money.

Yeah, I'd much rather who makes a playoff and their seeding in said playoff be determined by on field head to head rather than Kirk fuckhead Boles and similar idiots. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't. I mean, I guess we could skip the entire regular season, see what the poll voters think and start the season with playoffs in December.

It's the wrong thread but I think ultimately that's what we will get once all the realignment stuff is done. See the BIG/SEC partnership and OOC scheduling that is being worked on.

Agreed. End game will not have polls factored in. Good.

Here’s your path, can you make it happen. Period.

Fuck kurt.

I agree it's going that way eventually. It will take probably 4-5 years for the dust to settle but the polls will slowly factor out. At least that's what I'm reading in the tea leaves.

/thread off tracking

I'm waiting for the day the conferences expand their conference football playoffs. They already run conference tournaments before March Madness and the College World Series.

They wouldn't do that. BIG/SEC are already pushing for 4 guaranteed spots in the CFP. The 12 team format is only for the next two years. I'd bet it expands to 16 beyond that with BIG/SEC getting 8 combined guaranteed spots + potential for at larges.

If SMU, Miami, and Clemson go undefeated, who goes to the ACC championship?

I would think Clemson based on schedule. Miami has had nothing but cupcakes, same with SMU. Clemson played Georgia, and the other two played JUCO teams.

Oof.  Google is your friend:

Quote

At the most basic level, the teams with the two best winning percentages in conference play will play on the first weekend of December in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Bank of America Stadium for the ACC title.

In the case of a two-team tie for the second-best winning percentage, the first move is to turn to head-to-head competition, with the winner of that game holding the advantage. If there was no head-to-head competition, the next determinant is winning percentage against all common opponents. Then it moves to win percentage against common opponents with the added caveat of order of finish in the conference, beginning with the highest-seeded common opponents and moving downward in order of the standings. The fourth step is to factor in the combined winning percentage of a team's conference opponent, with the team who faced the better opponents gaining the advantage.

One problem is that there are simply too many Div 1 (or whatever the term is) college programs.

plus

A playoff based on rankings is regarded. Guaranteed spots for certain conferences is bullshit. Big money wants it both ways.

plus

NIL money and the transfer portal

equals:

Fans: Controversy!!! so and so is ranked one spot above so and so!!!! OUTRAGE!!!!

              ESPN: Heh heh, dance morons.

If we are going to have a playoff (sigh), then we need 8 conferences with 10 to 12 teams each. Each conference decides who their champion is and sends that team to the playoffs. Random seeded. Team with best record or best point differential is home team.

Or seed based on records (or point differentials). Whatever.
