Navy commander relieved of duty after photo showed him firing rifle with scope backward https://www.npr.org/2024/09/04/nx-s1-5100305/navy-commander-photo-rifle-scope-mounted-backward

I want to know the circumstances that even led to this. How this guy didn't realize immediately that the scope was backwards or that there was photos being taken is beyond me.

Good chance his sailors disliked the guy and did it to make him look like an idiot. I had some captains that were awesome and cared about their sailors. I had some captains that only cared about making admiral and gave zero fucks about the people under their command.

But are we tracking the senior enlisted that recently installed a Starlink terminal and secret WiFi network so they could stream during their cruise?

I don't understand why every chief wasn't busted to seaman and discharged, and I don't understand why none of the "investigating" officers haven't been fired.  How much brain power does it take to figure out that there has to be an external antenna, and it has to be on the very top of the ship?  Yet no one looked for the antenna on the exterior of the ship?  I think some of the officers were in on it, too.

Yeah, he didn't put that scope on the rifle, and chances are when he looked through it, he knew something was wrong, but didn't want to look like an idiot and ask why it was that way.

Whoever issued him that rifle didn't like him.

If we had decent internet porn and Starling terminals when I was in, and you told 19 or 20 year-old me that a briefcase-sized terminal could get me all the porn and video games I wanted when I was stuck on some shitty field exercise...

That's fucking wild. I'm shocked there aren't some sort of sensors that automatically detect wifi networks on our ships. Seems like kind a of a no-brainer, and an extremely easy deterrent against a foreign agent slipping a transmitting device aboard. Also, the network was named "Stinky" and wouldn't it show as an available, albeit locked, wifi network to anybody who bothered to check their phone/computer to see if they were near enough shore to get a signal? Should be pretty obvious that "Stinky" wouldn't be an official Naval network.

Senior CPO is an E-8, right?  So, for all her skulking, lying, and ignoring USN regs, she gets busted one grade to E-7?  Amazing.

E-9.

It's hilarious, yet really fucked up, that the Chiefs' mess would do this. When I was deployed, we just brought hard drives with illegally downloaded shows, movies, and porn to watch and trade.

You can set wifi networks to not broadcast their name.  It would then show as a hidden network when people saw it on their devices.  There might be other hidden networks on ships by design because then you have to know both the network name and the password to log in to it.

I thought Master Chief was the E-9.

It is. Tired posting leads to dumb mistakes. At captain's mast you are only going to get busted down one rank unless you're only "frocked" (wearing the rank but not yet being paid that rank). I've never heard of a command senior chief. I've only seen command master chiefs.

Doesn't Master Chief have his own hologram porn?

So even a person who has military  navy training and has advanced well up the chain of command can't even be trusted to use a firearm properly.....

FIFY.

Hell, it might have been his first time to ever fire a weapon in that capacity.
