Not sure people are aware, but with a team-leading six catches for 77 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown catch, against Clemson, Helm now has a team-leading 55 receptions for 688 yards, breaking Sanders' record of 54 receptions in 2022 and 682 yards in 2023.

Gunnar has been so freaking steady this season, along with Golden arguably the most reliable offensive weapons this season.  With his prototype TE size, smooth receiving skills and plus blocking he'll get his name called sooner than later by the league. Great story of perseverance along with development by the staff.

I think he is going to need near 100 yards receiving on Friday for us to win. We have to target him early and often. We are better when he is a huge part of the offense.

Last couple of years we had a play where Sanders would catch a 15-20 yard pass while wide open running across the field. I don’t remember seeing it this year with Helm. Am I insane? Are defenses taking it away somehow?

Yeah that was a problem vs ASU. I wonder what kind of odds a prop bet of "Juan Davis having a catch before Gunnar Helm" would have had.

We've seen that crosser plenty this year. But it was much more common before Quinn's injury.

Juan Davis needs to play very limited minutes. He is a decent receiver and a minus blocker. Helm isn't an all world blocker or anything, but at least he fucking touches his man. For the life of me I can't understand why Davis has seen the minutes he has. I guess it is because of Bond's injury limiting our ability to play with more WRs, but frankly I'd prefer to have a two back set in with Blue out wide or in the slot than two TEs with Davis. He should play to give Helm rest and that is about it.

Yeah, DT's efforts against USC were astonishing.  Over and over he'd catch, turn and stretch for a few more yards.  Phenomenal field awareness.

Gunnar isn’t the reason we lost this game by any means, but his “finger pointing” to a defender during the Michigan game, I stated here that he was very lucky to have not caused the team a “post-play” unsportsmanlike 15 yard penalty. Many on here thought I was ridiculous at the time, even though I officiated TXHSFB for almost decade. I would’ve flagged him! At that time and game the opponent would have the choice to enforce the 15 on the try or KO. Today it was still a 1st, but erased the gain - 15 yards!

You will never know the future repercussions of the “next play” until it occurs. Fortunately it was a great pass/catch to make up the yards, but man, all you had to do was not point at the defender you blew up.

In no way, shape, or form should a finger point = a late hit cheap shot.

When I saw him point I said oh shit don’t do that. He was clearly taunting but it’s bullshit to call it there with all the times they swallowed their whistles

That was among the cheapest-ass unsportsmanlike conduct penalties I've seen since the sport started consistently allowing more celebration and showboating. Not sure why a finger-pointing is any different than the jawboning and staring-down crap, the bowing up and chest-bumping opponents and whatnot.

And ... while I'm not one of the panty-wadders here ... the Horns down. I'm generally in the "live rent-free" crowd on that one, but it might be the closest equivalent to what Helm did if he wasn't intending to be indicating the direction Texas was moving.  He should have been given the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Plain and simple, it’s considered taunting. The same would’ve been (hypothetically) if a defender sacked Ewers and threw the “Horns down” or “throat slash” in Ewers face - post play.

Maybe it's not that plain and simple and shouldn't be viewed that way. Among teammates it's a sign of appreciation -- and, likely, sometimes among opponents. Kind of a grudging respect -- "good job" or even "Yeah, got you that time, but let's go again." I've seen it done that way, and a lot of times it's easy to tell that it's respectful.

I realize it's got to be difficult for refs to interpret those things, but Helm hasn't been the kind of guy to demonstrate antagonism and disrespect.

Cameras and TVs are good enough now to show us guys yapping at opponents and refs getting into the middle of it after multiple plays each drive, and when I see refs do that multiple times with the same guys, I wonder why they don't just throw a flag.  I haven't been seeing that kind of crap with Helm.

In the Michigan game, he pointed directly at the player he beat for the EZ catch. It’s the same as tossing the ball to the opponent or holding it in front of his face - post play.

Point well taken, but I think there's some room for interpretation. To me, it's nowhere near the same as a ball in the face, given the varied usages of the finger-point.

We'll just have to accept whatever the officials' interpretation is of whatever is going on between guys the whole game, but that's not easy to do sometimes, and this is one of those times.

And I agree with you on the “gray area” of an officials thinking. The only problem is it only takes one official to see it, throw a flag, and it’s not reviewable. It can, however, be overruled by the white hat, which this wasn’t.

Oh, I get that, I just think it is stupid.  Right now, the penalty for intentionally hitting a someone late, out of bounds, or trying to injure someone is 15 yards, the same as a simple hand gesture.   The first 3 are often not even called correctly or as consistently and they are way more fucking dangerous than a horn's down or a finger point.

Yeah, I don't know if it's entirely feasible, but it would be nice if Sark could get his guys to mostly stay away from the posing and taunting.

Through my “burnt orange” colored officiating goggles, Helm pointed directly at the opponent he blew up on the sideline during his reception. Simply going back to celebrate with teammates in the huddle/sideline would’ve garnered zero penalties and leave no question for an official. IMO but I digress.

This team does a lot of dumb stuff. That was just another example. In the end it didn’t matter. But Sark needs to find a way to still build great culture and relationships with his players while demanding attention to detail.

No idea why he did it. It was incredibly stupid. Yet, 100% it didn’t matter. And he shouldn’t have been flagged for that. If I were a ref I’d have said “knock that shit off”. That penalty doesn’t belong in this thread.

It was a stupid weak penalty. But he didn’t step out until after that did he? I don’t remember hearing a whistle and it didn’t look like it to me. I thought he could have cut inside and kept running instead of walking out of bounds and pointing.

Idgaf that was an all time bad ass taunt. Anyone acting like they wouldn't be pumped up after shoving another man like that to the ground doesn't have an ounce of competitiveness in them. Thought it was awesome then and still do today.

Gunnar Helm is awesome. Big, good hands, deceptively fast. His only knock is he isn't a great blocker, but the games we got him involved were good offensive games and there is a reason for that.

Will miss him, but I honestly think Niblack could be just as if not more special. Remember being impressed with him last year when he was with Bama and played against us...

And it might have been a make up call as well for an Ohio State taunting call earlier in the 1st half.

This is when the staff calls over the team and says they are going to be looking for a reason to call the same on you guys.   Knock it off and just walk away after a great catch/run or tackle.

You don’t understand. They’re committing penalties on every play that don’t get called and we’re not doing anything wrong and getting penalties called on us!!!!!!

It was a stupid play and it did matter, a lot.

This play got us to the 25 yd line. The 15 yard penalty put the team in the 40.

The very next play was a 27 yard completion which would have put Golden two yards into the end zone, albeit with a shitload of time left. Nobody here can guarantee if the playcall changes.
