Feels like Tenn is trying to game themselves a win.  But that seems to involve either only throwing their ace once on TKs rest day, or on back to back days in order to match up only once with TK.

We just witnessed one of the dumbest game plans Karen Weekly has ever rolled out….and that is saying something. She was trying to sneak a win and show everyone how smart she was. Now Texas has game 1 in hand, and we seen every pitcher on the roster. They are in must win mode for Saturday, and Mike White can throw Mac and Cit without any pressure.

I do understand her plan was to bring Pickens back in if Tenn got a lead, but TK was dealing. Now they are in a must-win Saturday, with Texas having seen all your pitchers.

Actually, if I was Karen Weekly, I would have "punted" game 1 against TK, knowing you probably aren't going to get to her the first time, put up your ace against Texas' #2 on Saturday, and then hope your offense does better against TK on Sunday and you can bring in Pickens out of the bullpen to close out a game 3

But like you said, now Texas goes into game 2 with a 1-0 lead, Tennessee hasn't seen Mac or Cit yet, Texas has gotten a look at 4 different Tenn pitchers AND they still didn't figure out TK (2 hits, 8 strikeouts).  The TK walks were uncharacteristic, but that zone was garbage all night long.

Texas dropped it's SEC-leading conf play ERA to 2.23 - over a full point less than #2 OU (3.33).  LSU getting drilled in game 1 by aggy moved them to 3.63 (tied for 4th with aggy)

TK is definitely the SEC Pitcher of the Year frontrunner so far.  9-1, 1.04 ERA, 5 complete games, 2 shutouts, 2 saves, 74K to 10BB, .176 BAA

Pickens is #2 at 1.17 in conf play in 47.2 IP

TK and Pickens are the only conference pitchers with ERAs below 2.00 - Sam Landry is the next closest at 2.01 ERA and is #3

Texas remains 1 game above OU and Aggy in the loss column, with LSU at 5 losses and Tenn at 6

Bama needs to take a game (or two) off OU and LSU needs to split the remaining games (or take them both) from Aggy, with Texas winning 2/3 or a full sweep

We control our own fate against OU and LSU, but we need help with aggy, since the genius SEC office decided not to schedule that series

I believe that you play to win. You can’t win all theee if you don’t win the first one. It was a coward move and can’t help but hurt the confidence of her team when the HC basically says “we can’t beat this kid”.

With as much as the SEC seems to go out of its way to create matchups in various sports, you'd think they'd want a second helping of last year's memorable postseason showdown with aggy. Or at least to renew the old rivalry. But no....

I agree. She overthought it. Either play Pickens an entire time or two through the lineup or don’t play her at all in game 1

But also, I like how we are being treated like OU, trying to minimize how many times through the opposing batters see your pitcher. Mike dropped his nuts and dared them to figure out TK, and they didn’t.

I mean it somewhat worked, we only scored 3 runs all in one inning.

AAS story explaining Weekly's strategy.   Apparently,  the norm as was also used vs OU.    Among the negatives,  it deprives fans of seeing a matchup of two premier pitchers.   Game 3 does not have the aura of Game 1.

(excerpts)

Quote

“There's nothing wrong with Karlyn, she's great," Weekly told the ESPN announcers during the game. "Just something that we've kind of thought about doing, kind of see how the game is flowing, and I kind of stuck with my game plan going in."

The move came as no surprise to Texas coach Mike White, who saw Weekly use a similar strategy in a series win over Oklahoma a few weeks ago.

“The strategy could be to see Teagan again and maybe come back at her when she's a little more tired,” White said. “There’s different ways of thinking about it. But we just worry about what we're going to do. And fortunately, we're able to score three runs, and Teagan pitched a shutout, and you never lose shutout.”

White credited Kavan for shaking off her early control issues and showing her maturation as a pitcher.

“Maybe last year, she might have given up the big hit in that moment,” he said. “But today, she got in a big situation, and she got the big outs. She stepped up in the big moments.”

“I mean, we'll see her again, for sure,” Kavan said. “I think watching some of their games, I know that she (Weekly) likes to be strategic in that way. Whatever they want to do about it, I'm sure we'll see her again.”

Yes, the second time we saw that pitcher.
