Where I can’t go is the argument for a certain number of guaranteed jobs for future generations— at that point you’re protecting the interest of the union as an institution and not actual current workers and doing so at the expense of vulnerabilities and inefficiency in critical national infrastructure.

I would expect them to push for permanent positions. Even if you're automated, you still need people to monitor the process. You need people to troubleshoot issues. You need people to perform routine maintenance and repairs.

I would ask if anyone really believes any savings in labor costs and efficiency would actually be passed on to the consumer? Every publicly traded company I've worked for is laughing in dividends.

Generally, yes.  Those savings won't be simply 1 to 1 traceable immediately , meaning if shipping rates are $100 prior to automation and $50 after automation.   Although these ports are negotiating with the longshoreman under USMX alliance under one negotiation they are independent organizations and compete with each other for shipping volume.

I really wish people weren't such fucking morons about the toilet paper...I legit am going to need to buy some in the next week or so (running down my last Costco 30 rack from a few months ago) and it seems like it's gonna be a chore again just like early COVID days...

30 rolls lasts you a week? You should see a doctor.

It's hard to disagree with the outrageous Union demands when ports and shippers are showing record profits.

The company I work for made $10 billion in profit, not revenue, in 2022. They then did several rounds of layoffs in 2023 to "trim the fat" on the salaried, non union, side.

Just based on the organized crime angle. How many ports are in swing states - Georgia and I'm not sure how big their port is and I doubt we are talking about a lot of votes that longshoremen can pull. I guess the other option is that the longshoremen can have a big impact on prices and can get generous concessions before the election just based on a potential price surge. But would the price increase be enough to swing a large number of votes?

Suspended until Jan 15 to continue negotiations of the new contract

Yeah, extending contract until 1/15

Looks like a 62% increase in pay.

The tentative agreement is for a wage hike of around 62%, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Both sides said in a statement that they would extend their master contract until January 15, 2025 to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all outstanding issues.

Ok dumb question: haven’t followed this closely but it’s apparently been brewing for weeks/months. How TF is it resolved in 3 days after strike?

It was all theater.  It frequently is.

So GRU, what's the next harmful event that you're actively hoping happens to our country before November? Just so I can put it on my calendar.

That and the union boss really pissed off a lot of people when he threatened the country and made the members look really bad, just as a massive hurricane hit.

A lot of members probably wanted this wrapped up really fast, or at least delayed until January when people have forgotten about his threats to cripple the country and a lot of people were going "wait, I can make six figures moving stuff around at a port?"

My army dad told me you can wipe your ass with enough paper to cover your thumb. Once again Gen X and Millennials have failed us, while Joe B saves the world.

But seriously if you crinkle toilet paper together instead of fold sheet over sheet, you are a problem, and I will exterminate you.

Odds that Trump takes credit tomorrow for averting the strike

Apparently the Transportation Secretary was credited by both sides with working things out.

Most people can't afford to strike for more than a week or two. I know plenty of people at my work who make $150-200k and basically live paycheck to paycheck. A loaded truck, a boat, and a 4 wheeler payments don't pay themselves.

Although the contract expired 9/30, bringing everything to a head (a head that subsequent events demonstrate was easily pushed down the road), I am quite convinced that Daggett made it unnecessarily noisy in an effort to affect the election for ol buddy Trump.

But the interests of union members and of management wouldn't let that go on long.
