2024 port workers strike

Well that's dumb, but okay. Didn't know the US couldn't produce it's own pulp, lol.

It can. But the pulp coming from South America is cheaper and is all shipping cost related. This has depressed the domestic industry to a degree and hurt a lot of rural jobs. IIRC.

They basically asked for their wages to match what the west coast workers are making. How exactly is that greedy bullshit?

For starters, they’d be worth about $20/hr with any competition, maybe less. Breeding mediocrity is their greatest contribution. Buy a book, now you are skilled labor, lulz.

You're doing a great job of proving why we need unions.

I should sound like someone who’s got a non-insignificant amount of personal wealth chained to a bunch of assholes that don’t care about a company or project, only how long they can extend their employment. Sabotage of equipment not uncommon. Sabotage of the works not uncommon. Whatever it takes to extend their ride a bit longer - who gives a fuck about the company you’re working for - I bought a book, where is mine?    I hate sending our skilled travelers home but that is easily overshadowed by getting to layoff the local leeches and sending them back to the unemployment line.  I wouldn’t feel this way if even 20% were just decent people instead of scum of the earth thieves and cheats.

I'm USW. I can't speak for other unions, but where I'm at I'd say less than 5% are flat out lazy or incompetent. With any system you're going to have people that take advantage of the system.

I don’t disagree that there are leeches everywhere.  And I’m not against skilled labor - what was once a union tenet. I’m against the useless fucks that insist I owe them something because they purchased a book.  I have worked with good BAs, and crook BAs.   I don’t believe there is still a need for unions but ymmv.  If and when I can cash out on this deal, come hell or high water this will be my last go with them. Top hour, show up, hire splits, lay-off splits and the lack of give a fuck, and even downright disdain for the company employing you has gotten to be too much to bear.

If companies hate unions so much, there is a very easy way to get rid of them - invest more in your employees. Higher wages, decent insurance (until we can get universal) and some kind of profit sharing / bonuses for the employees and less so for the top brass.

No, they are not easy to rid of.  Our “management” labor and operators have better packages without a doubt in both pay and benefits.   No pension which may or may not be there, though. They are loyal to the company and invested in its success, and are compensated as such.

Have you considered that your disdain for labor comes through your communications and they just hate working for you? You should just get rid of them all and do the work yourself.

My communication stops at the BA/BR level, unless I can make the time during layoff.   I don’t have the time nor inclination to shovel shit or pull levers.  That’s work best suited for “skilled labor”.  You know, guys who bought a book a few months ago.
