NBA 2024-25 Season Thread

Did Brooklyn not get the memo that they traded a whole bunch of shit this offseason just so they could tank? They beat the Suns with all of their guys playing in Phoenix tonight after beating Golden State on the road the other night, and are now only two games under .500.

Denver wins. Fuck GS.

-

Is anyone else happy for KAT so far this season? I ragged on him with everyone else for forever - the soft label, shitty in the playoffs etc. - but really thought he turned a corner last season and started giving a shit in ways that he hadn't previously. Then he got kind of wronged being shipped away and so far has done nothing but ball the fuck out - despite NYK being very pedestrian out of the gate. They've looked damn good over the past few weeks.

It's the type of story I like in the NBA and I think has made him very easy to root for. Doesn't hurt that the Knicks have been God awful for 50 years.

NBA Cup teams are set:

Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference. Currently the 3/4/5/6 overall seeds in the East.

Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference. Currently the 1/2/3/7 seeds in the West.

The Bucks have been really good lately, and without Cleveland/Boston to deal with, they should be the favorite in the East. They get a very favorable round 1 draw with the Paolo-less Magic, while the 1/4 seed in the West is OKC vs Dallas with Luka back healthy. It will be interesting to see how competitive some of these teams are,as I still don't know how to gauge the player's interest in winning this award.

After watching Hartenstein with OKC now for a few games, I see what the NBA nerds were saying when they signed him.  At the time, they said to kind of ignore that stats and how he was much better than they would indicate.

He's almost the perfect addition to them that if they have their core 3, he's #4.  More athletic than I thought and an elite passer for the position.  Great size and rebounding, which is what they needed.  He's at 12.9 rebounds per game, which would be third in the league right now if he had played enough games.  His scoring is limited but they have points from everyone else.

They're solid now with just him but mixing him in with Chet will be interesting.  They play a lot of different combos but Hart, Chet, JW, SGA, and Dort is a helluva lineup.  That will allow Chet to play more on the perimeter and mid range and they could even run Hart passing from the key.

Just a really good addition to them and he's a perfect skill and personality fit there.

West looks wide open this season - there are about 5 or 6 teams that could win the conference and I wouldn't be surprised.

1) OKC 18-5

2) Dallas 16-8

3) Houston 15-8

4) Memphis 15-8

5) GS 13-9

6) Clippers 14-10

7) Minnesota 12-10

8 ) PHX 12-10

9) Denver 11-10

10) Lakers 12-11

Y'all watch out if Phoenix gets healthy!

Boston moves into the top spot barely above the Cavs and OKC.  The Mavericks shoot up the charts into the 6th spot with the Bucks joining the top 10 as well.  The Grizz have been quietly finding a groove and playing really good ball behind the leagues best offense.  Golden State is coming back to earth.  The Magic fall due to their 2 stars being out.  The Knicks are getting it together with a top 10 offense and defense. Bye bye to the Nuggets and Lakers, perhaps not to return this season.

On the player side, Franz would have probably cracked the top 10 if not for his injury (sucks), instead Wemby and KAT join the fun with LBJ and Fox falling out.  Giannis is rolling up the list, putting up MVP numbers of his own and almost catching Jokic in PER. AD falls down the list with a string of bad games.

All these YouTubers are talking about all the trade possibilities coming up.

Newsflash - There are going to be very few trades this year. The CBA is just too restrictive. The league has a bad product on the court right now and they have ruined the trade drama part of things as well.

At some point fingers need to be pointed at Silver.

I know there's a separate Jokic thread, but I just want to point out how fucked up this is:

  • 32.3 ppg, second in the league behind Giannis by 0.2 ppg.
  • 13.6 rpg, first in the league.
  • 10.2 apg, second in the league, 2 apg behind Trae Young.
  • shooting 50.6% from three, second in the league behind Taurean Prince 54.2%.

This shit is not normal. At all. On any level. He could realistically average a triple double while leading the league in scoring, assists, rebounds and 3 point %. I'm not even including the advanced stats, which are just beyond stupid.

Interesting development...

Quote

The Miami Heat are open to listening to trade offers for star wing Jimmy Butler. The Heat have been stuck in Play-In Tournament range and have been unable to find common ground with Butler on an extension.

Butler has let it be known that he'd prefer to be traded to the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets or Golden State. The first two teams play in his home state of Texas, and all three are contenders. That's crucial for Butler, who prefers to play for a win-now team.

The veteran wing makes $48.8 million this season. Butler holds a player option for $52.4 million for the 2025-26 season. The 35-year-old could opt out of his contract and sign an extension with a new team following a trade. Butler could also opt in and extend this summer, as well as opting out and going to free agency in July.

If it's a deal that centers around Jalen Green going out, I would happily do that deal for Jimmy.  Even if Jimmy only plays half the games, Jimmy's attitude and veteran presence would be incredibly useful for this young Rockets team. Certainly more so than whatever intangibles Jalen Green brings to the table. I don't think Green's eligible to be traded though, since he signed his extension on the very last day possible, I'm pretty sure he's not eligible until after the deadline.
