It's the one sport that everyone likes but no one watches the games.

I can certainly relate; outside of Cavs games, I probably haven't watched a single NBA game start to finish in years.  The NBA today is basically a 3 point shooting contest every game.

I mean, this is ridiculous..and it's from the defending champions!

I like Steve Kerr but GS has been on the plus end of officiating for like 15 years but when one call goes against them, he thinks it's the worst thing in the world.  I once saw Draymond Green completely berate an official for 5 minutes in real time and no call.

I don't like Kerr. I think he's a whiny, preening bitch and has been for awhile now. He carries himself like he's Pop or Phil Jackson and he isn't. Spo does laps around him as best coach of this era imo.

LeBron, KD and Steph carried ratings the entire last decade. None of their teams are marquee anymore and none of them are sniffing any MVP discussion. You have SGA, Tatum and two Euros trying to carry the league and the only one of those four with any personality isn't particularly likeable (I don't think Giannis is very likeable either). It feels like we're witnessing a more rounded decline version of what happened post-MJ. To pick a word, there's a lack of magnanimity.

Ant and Wemby have personality and could be the future but I'm not sure Ant is good enough and the Spurs are a fucking mess (TWolves haven't been much better this season). I mean shit - the best player in the league's team is a mess.

The product also needs help - they HAVE to do something rules-wise about the 3P volume. I'll keep saying that I think they should cut the arc off at the sidelines. Start with something like that.

Another thought - while I'm digressing - I think the new cap apron rules - while promoting parity - are bad for fan interest and ratings. It's hard to stack superstar talent and that is what led to the amazing ratings we saw in 2016 and 2017.

Thank you for looking past my surly attack on your HC ;)

A lot of that hate is because you assholes have been good for a decade now.

2 minute report is out, and it claims it was the correct call on the loose ball foul. Rewatching the video, I think it should have been a timeout and not a foul. Typically the league doesn't go against the refs when someone makes a big stink about a single call, so it might just be covering their asses. Green does get possession of the ball though, he won that scrum at the very least.

It also says that there should have been a 5 second violation on their inbounds with 3.5 seconds left in the game:  https://official.nba.com/l2m/L2MReport.html?gameId=0022401204

I also think the Olympics reinforced a lot of this (re: where is the American superstar). There's a difference between being good in the NBA, posting great advanced metrics and even winning a lot of games (or a title - i.e. Tatum) and being so obscenely experienced and adept at the game at a base, visceral level to where when you're close to 40 years old your nation turns to you to carry the flag when France and Serbia are at the door and trying to break their way in.

I mean, by the letter of the law, it was a foul, but I've never, ever seen a foul called on a scramble for a loose ball like that.

I'm a 29 year old alcoholic that has barely been able to hold a job the past 7 years. I think my Wells Fargo checking account has negative $500 in it right now. My life has no purpose or direction. I'm fucking lost and depressed and confused. I've been waiting for anything to make sense. Most of that likely doesn't surprise y'all - I mean shit a lot of you probably already assumed it.

Tonight while commenting about the direction of the league something lodged itself within my conscious and I can't get rid of it and it has me impassioned and motivated and I believe that it's something that I want to do. I also think it's going to be near fucking impossible to do while having anyone take me seriously but I want to give it a shot. I believe I have to try and do it to give myself any semblance of peace or direction.

I've always liked writing (60k posts holla) and the English language and have felt for years that I wish I had've majored in English in college. It's not like I've done anything with my fucking accounting degree.

It was your comment @aggie08 that did it, if I'm being honest. I typed some shit and you said "spot on" and some switch deep within me flipped.

My dad, after writing a weekly college football column for years, wrote a book about his life and Texas football that never reached a wide audience. A decent amount of folks here have read it. It was pretty good - not great. So maybe it's something genetic.

Anyway.

I want to write about LeBron, Durant and Curry and their era as American superstars and how intertwined all of their legacies are and tie the entire narrative around the '24 Olympics. Very, very early working title would be:

American Giants:

James, Durant, Curry and the last great era of the American superstar

I already googled it and "American Giants" isn't a title that anyone has published.

A lot of y'all are probably laughing and/or think this is insane and think that I'm a drunk and that none of this will ever happen or that I'll forget about it by tomorrow but I promise I'm dead serious and I'm going to try and do this.

Tear me apart, support me, give me connections - fucking whatever I don't know.

I'm gonna go for this.

We'll see what happens.

Thanks guys

I just spoke with a German photographer who was at the USA/Germany game. I dialed international. He was effusive about LeBron and how he took the end of the game over. I got his email and we're setting up a time where I can record the convo.

I'm fucking doing this.

What the fuck?

I was gonna post there’s too many stans the last 20 years, and not enough loyalty to teams because fans will jump ship from team to team with their favorite player. I think the nba product is better now than 15 years ago. But I’ve also been a bball fan my whole life. More spread out success/championships besides 3 teams winning it. better players. The 3pt shooting can go down a bit.

I dont mind the rosters but the 3 point shot has to be reigned in. Ideally a game is most watchable when teams only shoot 30-40 3s so just put a limit on it. Make it to where teams actually have to be strategic about who is shooting 3s and when they are shooting them. Im watching random bench scrubs just come in and jack 3s. Its horrible.

Blah, blah, blah...all I read was that I'm entitled to royalties if you make any money on this endeavor.

It's a cool premise. They're this generation's Magic, Bird, and MJ, and it's entirely possible that none of see anything like it again in our lifetimes with the way the league is going. The international stars are fucking amazing right now, but something just hits different with homegrown dudes who have exceeded the insane expectations we put on them as teenagers (or college kids). I'd read it.

I find it mildly annoying but I don't mind the increased 3 pt shots as much as others.  I enjoy seeing the strategy evolve over time.

I don't mind the shot but I don’t see any strategy when watching the majority of NBA teams. Zero offensive identities, only individual identities.

They're trying to maximize efficiency by prioritizing the 3 pt shot over 2 and the corner 3 over the above the break 3s.  I'm just waiting for the tipping point of having a team dominate the inside game and having the higher FG% from close to the basket render the 3 pt shooters ineffective.

I know this has nothing to do with this season, but anyone who says the guys in the 80s couldn't hang today, tell me one player who is in the same universe as this guy from a "make everyone better" standpoint.

Jokic is in the same universe. But it’s depressing to watch those highlights because nowadays on every one of those fast breaks someone would be drifting off to the three point line instead of going to the hoop.

That's pretty much where we are today, unless you were speaking about both teams combined, in which case I agree: https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/three-pointers-attempted-per-game

The average across all teams this year is ~37 3 pt attempts per game, and for me its unwatchable dogshit. Five years ago it was 34 per game. Ten years ago it was 22. But that 14-15 season  is also the start of the Warriors reeling off 5 straight Western Conf championships with Steph and Klay bombing away. Rather than limit the shots, my preference would be to widen the court and back up the line another 3-4 feet. Guys will still take them, but the percentages will go down which will change the calculus by the analytics dorks on  what's a "good shot". And the interior should be less clogged as well.

The other issue is turning on a game and realizing that half of the stars are sitting out the game. I don't know if its that everyone in the league is a giant pussy now, or if the ever increasing size of these players has reached a point where the body just cant take the beating, but dudes sitting out games is a common occurrence now. The league would never do it because the revenue would suffer, but I wouldn't mind a 50-60 game season if the players were on the court more. 82 games is ridiculous when over half the fucking teams make the playoffs now if you consider the play-in games.

The fan energy in that cup game had all the energy of one of those covid games.

I said that Sengun would the 4th best on the OKC roster.  Might move that down to 5th behind Hartenstein.

Just a complete defensive dismantling of the Rockets.  Their 6'0" PG was off so they couldn't score.  They had to get him his shots so the 6'0" SG that was #3 pick in the draft didn't even play because he'd be eaten alive.

Not one of these Rocket players are a #1 on a title contender but they gave them all money and then drafted a 6'0" SG who doesn't get off the bench.

Congrats.
