on the one hand, russ getting a coach fired for one reason or another tracks. on the other hand, who exactly are these nuggets scrubs that are losing faith in their nba champion coach because he treats his best players differently? and who is the gm/front office person who decided that that was a good enough reason to fire malone?

Posted (edited)

oh yeah, that’s right, its josh kroenke. i generally trust his judgment, and his track record speaks for itself, but damn. and they didn’t even confer with jokic at all, they just told him about the decision before everyone else. damn. really hoping jokic can get out of denver now.

Jokic isn't going anywhere.  He's like Luka was.  Zero desire to leave.

From what I've heard, he was fine with the firing.  The Malone/Booth beef had infected the entire organization.  The only way forward was getting rid of both of them and start fresh.

Take last night, for example, Russ didn't get near the minutes he's been getting and Jalen Pickett got them instead.  Which is a good thing for the Nuggets.  Russ works in 15-20 minutes a night.  He doesn't work at 30+ a night (like he has been getting since Murray got injured).  Nor do you want him out there to close out games (see TWolves).

Also Pickett actually looked pretty damn awesome. He doesn’t turn the ball over (leads the team in A/TO), he shot well, he played alongside Jokic and CB well. I mean we definitely want Murray back for the playoffs, but maybe Pickett helps stagger Murray when Jokic is out and we’re not as terrible then.

yeah i mean i’ve never even imagined him angling for a move, he’s 0% preoccupied with stuff like that. i just think he deserves better than being left in the dark on stuff like that, and i don’t see the FO doing anything to make denver competitive. he’s going to play 20 years and finish with one title, which again, he couldn’t care less about, but i do. id like to see him win again, and i don’t see denver even trying.

They could win again with him but Murray and MPJ are taking up way too much cap space. They need to either cycle out of those contracts or dump one or both of them - granted no one is going to want to pay Murray $57M in 2029.

Jokic was Josh Kroenke's first call after he fired Malone.  While they didn't consult him on it, he was the first to know when it happened.

You're going to see some moves from the Nuggets this offseason.  They can't just keep rolling the same squad (great starting 5, awful bench) out there and expect different outcomes.

At least one of them, if not both, are gone this offseason.

This is exactly it. I avoided the thread because I was in a dark place Tuesday with my buddy who I go to a lot of games with. Firing Malone is admitting that our current set of stars and bench won’t work, at least to me. I really can’t believe we gave Murray the contract we did with how bad he played at the Olympics. I don’t think we get anywhere close to value on getting rid of him.

To Derka’s point about not caring about winning enough with ownership I completely agree. So pissed that last year we weren’t willing to go over the second apron.

I'd be optimistic. Your ownership seems to give a shit and is making tough decisions to try and go in a new direction. A lot of teams aren't managed like that.

Star player is the first to know.  Aaron Rodgers didn't fire Saleh but maybe he could've stopped it.  Same here?

As for big moves, like Dallas, who was the last big FA that signed there?  I used to live in Denver, loved it.  But NBA free agents don't, though money talks

Do or play in tonight. actually just thinking about the game and if we lose, im on board to just shut it down for the next 3 days and get our rest now since we're 98% going to the play ins in the 7/8. let the 7/8 opponent play out these last 2 games and not get the rest

The Kroenkes are good owners.  They've won championships in football, hockey and basketball all within the past ~5 years (don't remember what year the Rams won). They are not afraid to make big changes when things aren't working (see the Avs this year). The only knock I've heard on them is they aren't willing to pay for top GMs in the NBA.  We'll see if that changes this offseason.

Lakers aren't getting either one of them without giving up Reaves, at minimum.  They aren't going to give them away.

I’ve been thinking 1 or 2 of MPJ, Murray and AG are gone. I love AG, he’s Mr Nugget, but to me he has the highest trade value of the 3 and he’s maybe actually not the best natural fit alongside Jokic, as much as it pains me to say. I wear the guys jersey to some games.

I’ll just say 2 years ago I wanted bad for Denver to trade for Obi Anonoby when he was on the Raptors and ship MPJ there and I still stand by it.

Reaves is the best player among those 3 and is on the best deal. They'd trade LeBron before they'd trade Reaves. If I'm Denver I'm looking to dump one of MPJ or Murray or both and not entirely worried about what I get in return as long as it gives some flexibility or draft capital.

I mean how much high-level basketball does Murray realistically have in the tank? His body seems like it's fucked.

AG needs to stay on this team.  Not only is he a perfect fit for Jokic, he's an athletic big who can play top level defense.  Agreed that he has the highest trade value of the 3, although I think MPJ is a lot more valuable than people think.  He shoots 40% from 3 on high volume and grabs 7 boards a game.  Problem for the Nuggets in the playoffs is that he disappears for games at a time and is not good on D.

Nuggets are not giving up either one to the Lakers for less than Reaves. Lakers honestly don't have much to offer for them and, unlike the Mavs, aren't looking to just help them out.

Only chance is to trade the Joker to Houston and rebuild with their 10 picks.

Okay. Fuck it. I like Ja.

If you think this move was made without Jokic’s approval in some form…

Jokic got super cryptic when asked about the conversation with ownership. Malone is a good coach and a great fit for up and comer like the Nuggets a few years ago. But a seasoned team with success under its belt is probably gonna get sick of his shit

I guess OKC vs the field in the West I’m leaning OKC, but there are some scary teams that could pop up and steal it
